Now, I haven't played GW1 so please excuse me if this is common knowledge but is guild wars an mmo? By this I mean does it allow thousands of players to play simultaneously on the same server or are zoned instanced for only a few people? Are there quests that you can undertake to further develop an overarching narrative? I ask because when GW1 came out it wasn't considered a traditional mmo, could someone explain why this was besides the free-to-play aspect?
Also, I am interested how this game can clear its overhead without a subscription while still maintaining servers and adding new content and employed staff. Could someone explain their business model? Appreciate the assistance.

ok first of all i am obligated to be a little annoyed and tell you to go read up on it at the guild wars 2 official site and such
now as for your answer which u shudnt give yes it is it is a massive world
secondly by personal narrative i am guessing you mean personal story and yes most of the missions for this will be instanced though (rest of the world will not be however majority of game will be open world)
as for the business model i understand it well enough but i find it boring to explain and dont realy feel like it after the length post i just made in another thread *wanders off to play some guild wars 1 and earn more HoM stuff*
hall of monuments reward calculator btw
Give it a free trial and see if it match your definition of MMO.

Guild Wars 2 will be quite different from Guild Wars where dynamic quests will come into play which allow players to control the events within the game world. The world will be open to all players to interact, instead of only within towns and specific areas in the first one.
Business model for the first Guild Wars was to releases new expansion (content) twice a year, iirc, which would allow the company to earn enough to continue on from selling expansion such as Factions and Nightfall (which was not require the first Guild Wars to play). It's like selling retail game which earn revenue from box selling, instead of subscription. I can only assume Guild Wars 2 will following the same business model, which allow player to buy more contents at their own pace. There also the NCsoft Store which sell extra storage space, extra character slot, costumes, makeover pack, pets and skills unlock, which allow the company to earn extra income.
Is this game an mmo in the traditional sense?
GW: No. Guild Wars uses heavy instancing.
GW2: Yes. Guild Wars 2 has a persistent world.

No, this game is not a MMO in the traditional sense. This is assuming the traditional MMO are all grind fest with boring quests that doesn't matter.
This.
