What do you think of Anime-themed MMORPGs in general? Do you like to see more MMOs like them or you prefer another types of graphics?
When you talk Anime style of art, that in itself is a broad spectrum. For me as far as MMORPGs go, I can go with any style just as long as:
* It depends on how the art style blends with the setting / IP. I can dig a Fantasy style MMORPG if using the setting and art style of the old "Record of Lodoss War" anime.
* If it's done well.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
never liked them due to the simple facts that they all looks and behave the same.
And what's the deal with oversized weapons in these games?
Oversized weapons isn't a staple only with "anime" style. Western themed and made games use them also. Take for instance Darksiders.

I would rather have my eyes burned out with hot knives than to look at anime. To me it just looks so goofy.
With the big eyes and spiked hair I just don't get it.
I beg to differ.
as quick examples
The things you consider "Anime" is mostly kids shows running in the afternoon i suppose, the style can be quite realistic and it allows storytelling normal films can't do as well or without higher budget in a "real" setting
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
It'll depend on which anime theme and whether it fits the setting of the game. If the setting is dark, then cute characters will seem out of place. Something in the CLAMP universe might be fun with the ability to travel between worlds/settings ala tsubasa.
ROSE online/Seal online style i'm not a huge fan of (the cutesy look).
I can't stand the "barbie world" graphics a lot of others seem to admire, like in AoC, EQ2 or FFXIV, as much as I enjoyed all 3 games.
This ...
Well ... except I dont see anything wrong with AoC, FFXIV, or EQ2s graphics. Aion, L2, and TERA graphics and art style and animations, I love it and wish they could mod WoW to look like that. :P
I prefer realism as opposed to cartoons, so for anime graphics, which are basically cartoons, NO.
However, I can come to a middle ground. A game like WoW that is cartoony but can lean toward realism works for me. I really prefer realism though, like LOTRO, AoC, GW2s graphics, Rift's graphics etc.
Anime style is just plain horrid. If I wanted to look at a cartoon I'd turn on the Cartoon Network.

I like Anime but MMOs who uses anime styled graphics always seems to be doing that to hide the fact that their polygon count is lower than 10 year old games. The fact that the gameplay seems to be most grind doesn't help either.
I am all for a good anime styled game, with good graphics (FF XIV has kinda good anime styled graphics, girls with cat ears can only be anime, but the rest of the game could be better) but the art style is not the thing that really sells the game to me.
I would play a good game with anime styled graphics but something like that doesn't exist. FF XI is the closest so far.

GW 1 & 2 is somewhat anime inspired actually, particularly some things from G: Factions.
I like realism too but I am more interested in how well it is done than if it looks real (FF pistol swords and other silly things excepted).
What really ticks me off is when they use one style for backgrounds and another for characters, that looks bad. LOTRO is somewhat guilty of that even if it is based on the old LOTR paintings instead of anime.

YES, LOTRO environment is awesome but then you look at your character and are like UGH, run away! lol. Part of what makes how well the graphics are done is how it also ties in with particle effects and sound effects. Ambience helps with environment and sound effects help with combat animations and other things. It all ties together basically.
I don't care as long as it is done properly and doesn't look *too* childish, in fact I might even prefer them since realistic games are failures until there is enough processing power to replicate real world detail, by then we'll be playing with our five senses and plugging into the Matrix anyway.
This kind of gets complex though, as there are anime with impressively good art one might even call "realistic".

I can't agree with you more. Lotro's background and enviroment is absolutely awesome, but on the other hand, I absolutely hate the game's avatars. I understand that lotro's art derives more of the original lotr's art, but imo it just doesn't fit in well. One of the reason I couldn't get into the game.

When done like Aion or Lineage 2 I love them.

I like Anime and I like MMORPG and I like them more when they combine.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

I really love Anime themed games and I really can recommend the Anime MMORPG (free to play) Nostale available in several languages.

And can I also throw this out there:
It's not all like this:
I apologise for blitzing this page for anyone with a slow connection. I just couldn't resist.
Always read the small print.
Yeah I do like that kind of art, but most of the games they are from are korean grind fests which I don`t like.
Absolutely loving Anime and so styled MMORPGs

I realize not all anime has big eyes.
The examples you show only confirm my distaste for anime.
I know a lot of people like that style, however I think it is horrid. Maybe its a cultural thing.
Anyway I am glad you like it. I don't
Oh excuse me while I look for some eye drops to soothe the pain in my eyes from looking at your post.
Dunno what you are talking about, the pictures were absolutely awesome.
On topic: If they are done properly then why not.
I like them if they are done well.
