Good grief, over half the voters actually think GW2 or SWToR will topple WoW. My confidence in these forums has taken a bit of a hit!
Not necessarily... I voted for GW2 simply because I'm a fan of it and not really expecting it to "topple WoW".
I do, however, expect it to redefine how future MMOs are made. Hopefully we'll see the end fo WoW-clones and the beginning of truly innovative thinking.
I hope WoW continues to be popular with the type of player that enjoys it, mostly because I hate running into them in the games I play. I think SWTOR has a problem, stated above, that they have to meet everyone's expectations of a Star Wars game and that is close to impossible. GW2 - is kind of an apples/Oranges thing since there have been several threads devoted to whether GW is an actual MMO. WoW is the best game out there for those that like a game balanced for the newer/causual players. I think the only games that could take away their sub base are the moronic Facebook games(moronic is my opinion of the game not the peoplle who play them - mostly the people who play them are addicted to them, they are the gaming industry's version of crack).
SWTOR will probably make some good money and have a good sub base unless or until they emulate the history of Galaxies. GW2 will most likely be the "second" MMO for many people since you just have to buy the game to play it - no sub. I might try GW2, Star Wars no longer holds an interest for me.
I voted none....neither GW2 or SWTOR or anything else.
That being said....someone said something about Perfect World having the largest number of players if you're going to include players in the east. I think if we DIVIDE the number of PLAYERS into eastern and western (we can't do it by subs, since GW2 won't have subs)....and if we also specify WESTERN players, then I think we're going to find GW2 is going to possibly show itself very competitive with WoW for western players (again, not "subscribers"). Since GW2 doesn't have monthly payments...it will also SHARE some of WoW's players.
Someone else called GW2 a "niche game." I don't see how it could be labeled "niche." SWTOR, on the other hand, is probably more niche, because it appeals to SW fans, which is a very specific demographic (not that some non-SW fans won't play, but be honest....SW is the major appeal here). GW2, on the other hand, has a much broader fantasy MMO appeal.
Do I think either SWTOR or GW2 will have 12 million players (not subscribers, mind you)....still....no. Do I think they will be competitive with WoW IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE? Absofuckinglutely. If you do not count WoW's eastern subscribers, then WoW's subscriber base in the WEST....is an attainable goal for a very ambitious and awesome MMO. Will either of those games top WoW in the west? Hmm....maybe? I think that's possible...but not probable. And I don't think it will happen, if it does...in the first year that Cataclysm and GW2 and SWTOR are out together. But over the course of a couple of years....maybe, just maybe.
Dethrone WoW? No. Share some players and get some new players that WoW doesn't presently have amongst it's subscribers.....yes.
For those that think GW2 "has been done already"...... (that statement blew me away, because if you've researched GW2 at ALL...I don't think you could say that)
You cannot watch that entire video and even REMOTELY think "it's been done already." Also...this video is not a "what we plan on doing," it is "what is in game and WORKING NOW and WILL BE THERE at release."
I hope WoW continues to be popular with the type of player that enjoys it, mostly because I hate running into them in the games I play. The highlighted sentence there, shows you're not understanding what GW2 even IS....GW ONE was not an MMO, you're right. ArenaNet never claimed it to BE an MMO....that rhetoric did not come from the developers, and players that call it an MMO are outright WRONG, because the developers do not call it that. I think the devs KNOW what kind of game they made.
GW2, on the other hand....IS AN MMO. That is not debated. It is not a remake of GW1, it is an entirely NEW thing, as far as the game play and game itself. What carries over from GW1 is not stuff that makes it a similarly NON-MMO. Research this a bit, you'll see what I'm saying here.
With the legions of star wars fans, the pop culture main stream influence of star wars, the games graphics being able to be turned down low enough to run on really low end PCs, combined with Bioware's typical polish and storytelling, and the massive advertising budget of EA?
Uhhh I'm gonna go with SWTOR. Will probably try both GW2 and SWTOR. It would take a really huge goof up for SWTOR to not at least equal WoWs subsriber numbers within a year. The graphics are, believe it or not, years beyond WoW. The game code is years beyond WoW. So it will come down to the gameplay. Is it addictive?
This. I really do think WoW will have a dropoff after Cataclsym this year. SWTOR will start beefing up the marketing and with such credentials behind them...make a run at ol' wowey. What do I really expect? WoW to remain numero uno for 2 more years. After that I couldn't even guess who'd be number one. Hopefully change this dictatorship to a democracy.
I think WoW will still be top dog, Activision/Blizzard have invested millions in advertising & will continue to advertise a great deal because it has proven to be effective in market generation (notice I didn't say penetration because they have single-handedly opened up MMO's to the masses).
Out of SWTOR & GW2 it is highly likely that GW2 will be very very strong in sales & I think will fairly rapidly overtake sales that GW1 generated, my guess is around the 8million mark within 12 months. SWTOR is going to be much harder to judge, unless they can "do a WoW" & bring in a very large new market audience from out of current non-mmo gamers I don't see them overtaking GW2 for the number 2 slot, of course I am mindful of the fact that the audoence WoW created, while surprisingly loyal may also be ripe for a secondary game, or even to make WoW their secondary game, also buyers of GW2 may also be willing to run a secondary game like SWTOR there is quite a large amount of potential for overlap in the market.
It will, I think, depend on who has the long-term aspirations to grow & the money & determination to at least match Blizzard's "public conciousness/awareness" which will take some hefty & uncompromising marketing spends to achieve over a considerable amount of time.
While WoW still is a good game and i feel IMO will be around for a while. These games that are coming out now are big buisness.
The companies that are behind them have spent alot of time & money in these games. Much the same as Blizz did when they were making WoW.
These games are taking the best parts of the games that are currently on the market and are using those to their advantage and incoorperating them into their game and trying to make the expericance for the gamer (us!!). Now these of course come from WoW and every other game that is out there. May people will say that this is a WoW clone or that this was ripped off from WoW, but many of the older gamer out there can tell you that most of WoW's starting features (Blizz has come a long way and have scince come up with many good NEW ideas them selfs) came from other games that were on the market and they improved & polished those ideas to make their own game a better experiiance for the gamers.
Many of us will also tell you that at the time of WoW entering the market EQ was king, had a whole 250k player base which at the time was HUGE. We all laughed at WoW with its kiddy graphics. The game would NEVER de throne EQ. About 3 weeks later i was a raid leader in EQ that had a 2nd computer and during my EQ raids was playing WoW on my 2nd computer......
GW2 looks great to me. Alot of the ideas that are going into the game are sounding great and if they are able to pull it off even better for us. I keep a close eye on any new updates and drool when ever i see them come out. I keep my fingers crossed and really do hope that they can pull this game off.
SW:ToR seem to be keeping alot more of their game information close to their vests atm. Not a bad thing but like many others I want more info on the game and featurers. Now the team behind this game are also seasoned Pros. So im sure that they have a time line on when they are going to be releasing the game information. But they seem to be sticking to that time line and yeah. It sucks for us cause we want more.
Both of these games have a legit shot of becomeing the new king. Or even both games topping WoW. Both have followings already. GW1 was already a good goame with many followers, BW of course has many followers. The MMO market is getting larger and larger. The # of people playing is always getting larger (thanks to WoW) and with new great games like these coming to the market there will be new MMO players.
Many people will be new to MMO's and will not look backwards to WoW, many people want something new and will leave WoW and it is up to GW2 & SW:ToR to keep those subs in there own game, and with the polish and thought that both seem to be putting into their games i would not be suprised to see 2 new games ontop of the mountain

I definitely like that GW2 is trying to do something different and I hope they have success as a result. I don't see GW2 as a potential 'WoW killer' but it's possible it could be the game that opens the door for future MMOs.
based on GW1, I am very skeptical about GW2 being anything more than a niche game that gets old after a couple weeks, but I have hope.
SWTOR is going to be huge though. I'd put money on it.
However, bliz's next mmo will probably be the next 10-mil subscriber mmo.
old after a week? based on the persistent world with the dynamic events that change that world its gona last more then a week alooooooooooooooot more then a week next time do your reasearch on the game i dont like people who judge there really isnt a comparison why someone would want to leave its b2p nt p2p
I personally don't value SWTOR that highly. I see no reason why it should ever get as big as WoW.
GW2? Some good about it, some bad about it. But hyping up MMORPGs that are far from beeing released? Done that, learned my lesson. Let's judge when we can play the final release.
some bad about it? you cant say that unless you can tell us whats bad about it 3 things should do the trick u said it to no hyping up for an mmorpg if it isnt realesed? why are u saying that its some good and some bad you dont know that so far in gw2 btw everything iv seen has been good this is after watching every single video that was made including the 50 minute wartower video carefully enough to download it on my hard drive and watch it on my tv
I hope WoW continues to be popular with the type of player that enjoys it, mostly because I hate running into them in the games I play. I agree with this, but thats kind of my issue.
I love GW and would hate to see what made it special thrown out in the name of generic MMO design in GW2 just to maximise it for the woW market.
I am not panicing yet though, we don't know much really, and I do trust A-Net
I cant understand why people still include GW2 in these sort of polls. I cant understand why these people dont get that the B2P model is a blessing and a curse. Its a blessing becouse it will atract huge numbers, but its a curse becouse since it does not have a sub fee it will become people second mmo. They wont leave the mmo they are paying for now for GW2, theyll play GW on the side because they can jump into it at any time.
IMO WoW has too much content and is too easy to get into. SWToR has the best chance IMO due to the large base that will try it, what happens from there is up to EA. GW will be successful but will not be able to knock wow out.
its not trying to knock wow out where did u get this from? there both there own games wow's majority of players comes from the east they have around 3-4 mil in the west gw1 had more then that but the true fact is who cares for all we know gw2 is free to play that means u buy the game then play the chances of it beating subscriptions of wow are pretty high that game is bieng done to every detail for the players they want to make the world perfect for the players dont be suprised if in 1 year it gets 15-20million players reasons
1 - free to play/b2p
2 - hand made world dynamic events
3 - years in the making hype has grown greatly
4 - allthough lack of info there are videos that give you the feeling that you have played the beggining
Am i the only one who thinks comparing a buy to play game to a subscription based game is retarded? Who cares which of the two will be bigger considering everyone should have GW2 just if for no other reason because it will be buy to play instead of subscription based....
You need to pay for network traffic and you need to keep a staff of many douzens, if not over hundred of people employed and paid.
There is absolutely nothing "retarded" in believing that this might work better with a subscription.
If GW2 wont sell well enough, this wont work. Given the quality of GW1, I'm not so sure they will manage it. Personally, I was utterly bored by GW1 after just some days of playing.
just because u were bored with gw1 do u think youl be able to change the minds of the millions who played it happily? and considering there fixing gw2 to be 100x better u really should check it out watch that then say u dont like it
I doubt any of those two will topple WoW for the time being. WoW sits heavenly on its "throne" and it will sit there still even after GW2 and SW:TOR releases, since WoW appeal more to non-mmogamers than most other mmo's and a lot of WoW's players won't even hear about these others unless they actively seek another mmo, which a lot of WoW-players I know won't do. They like their game.
let me explain to you please wow can have its throne ok. gw2 is in a league of its own it will have its own throne it has its own fanbase its on lore playstyle and its free to play big diffrence between p2p and b2p its like 2 diffrent countrys who have kings understand ?
WoW will lose people over time, but it won't be anything to do with these two games, or not enough to matter.
It's hard for people to leave a game when they have been playing for a long time and putting a lot of work into it, they have friends that wont leave ect....
I don't play WoW (only beta long ago), but I have been playing MMOs a long time, and I would put money on this. Plenty want to leave, a few are able to do so....They still get new subs.
GW2 and SWTOR will not be releasing anytime soon, WoW could come up with a screw you expansion and time it right when they do release, or throw everyone a bone and soften people leaving.
A lot of people will buy GW2, its b2p, but their is a lot of hype around the game, so how they deliver, and how they handle their cash shop will determine how many people actually are active and play (I plan on picking it up, even if they screw it up, I can get my money worth probably).
As for SWTOR, I will keep an eye on it, but I don't think the super questing/voice over style is my thing, but I will keep an open mind. I am sure plenty will like it, but as to it being the next big thing, I give GW2 more of a chance for that, but I am putting doubt on both. No one game is going to be the next WoW, WoW got big because newer MMO fans started to be introduced at the end of EQ (EQ started to get mentioned on TV/programs before both launched), then WoW came out and it exploded, and they do a good job of marketing and making the new people want to play their game.
When people do leave WoW, they will be leaving for many different reasons, and that is why they will go to many different games. I do not see a new explosion of mmorpg people waiting to explode on the scene.....The explosion of people playing stuff is the farmville type people, and those aren't mmos and I don't see a hybrid of the two....Could be wrong, but they are doing just fine on browser.
So the throne will be fractured...some day....Just not by these 2, and today.
I am of the mind that only Blizzard will be able to topple thier empire... Starcraft Universe (they really are dumb if they don't do this) or some other unforseen project will be the only possible threat to their fat piggy of an MMO.
I don't think so. If Blizz themselves believed that there would be no need to make a new MMO, all they had to do is fixing the GFX engine but they are in fact working on a new MMO and moved their best guy (Kaplan) from Wow to lead the new project.
Blizzard are no fools, the know that the competition will be tough in the future and that Wow can't keep it up for another 6 years, not a chance.
And don't count out the other games.
GW 2 have a great budget and many of the original Wow theme working on it (more than Blizzard have in fact). They are veterans and the GFX engine is written by the same guy who made Wows engine too. Counting this game out just because Blizzard isn't making it is foolish. No monthly fees makes it even more dangerous.
TOR is made by Bioware who besides Wow sold as many games as Blizzard. It has the highest budget ever and Bioware have many fans. I am not sure the IP is as popular as fantasy but counting the game out is also not smart.
Rift is made by the guy who made Heroes of might and magic and about 200 other games. They have many veterans working for them several from EQ among others. Good art and the demo they showed is pretty well made. You might not have heard of Trion but they might be on the road to success.
Copernicus is headed by R.A Salvatore (Drizzt) and Todd McFairlaine (Spawn). They have many fans and several old Wow devs working for them...
And there are others. There is no way Wow will be the largest MMO in the west late 2012. And before you start talking about 12 millions, 8 of those are in China and if you count them then Perfect world who have something like 60 million players would be the largest game. And Wows 4 million western players have been about that many for almost 2 years now, even if everyone of them stays I doubt that many new will start playing it.
GW 1 had 4,5 million players, if they all pick up GW 2 it will already be larger than Wow in the west.
As I said before, Blizzard know all this and is putting a lot of work into their next game but just because they made 1 huge game does not mean they actually can do it again. Before Diablo were Blizz mostly known for porting Amiga games to PC, getting from small to huge can go fast. In Blizz case they were unknown early '97 and giants with both Diablo and Starcraft late the same year. This can happen with someone else too. And large companies can fail badly with new games too.
Whatever that will happen am I sure we will have a fun time with several new interesting MMOs. But the time of Wow is fading, at least in the west while things is different in China. One or several games will take it's place.
Ur numbers are a bit wrong.
And you cant really compare f2p games like that.
Gw1 had 1,5 million players at their peak. Maybe. Maybe 4.5 sold boxes, countering to blizzards total of 35 million. So yea.
And dont forget Gw1 was a f2p game. As Gw2 will be to. Just imagine how many players would flock in into f2p WoW.
Truth to be told i dont see any of these mmos comming even close to WoW. I dont see how any1 can even expect that. In 6 years was there any mmo that gathered even 1/10th of WoWs base? Stwor has large fan base, but not all of them are into games, and those who are, not all of them are even into mmos. With that said that doesnt leave tens of millions fans left actually. 6 years old game still attracting new audience, well established. WoW will be dethroned when Blizzard pulls the plug.
Blizzard knows how to take care of their behemont. Do you really think they will just sit down and watch? Dont worry for WoW. As much as fans of other franchises want that to happen WoW will be going strong for a very long while.
hes numbers arent wrong gw1 had over 4 million players and accounts made wow on the other hand had 35 million boxes sold but how many of those people left when bc came out oh wait when wrath came out of waiiiiit when cata came out there are around 14.8 mil people playing wow how do i know u say? my sister is going out with a gm. gw2 is defently going to beat wow in players why u say? because the world is near perfect. theres a big diffrence in mmorpgs in 7 years gw2 is going to be b2p that means no monthly fees please take in account that in every single mmorpg alot of the players will play gw2 u know why because once theyv had there fill of that content they want something new and look its gw2 with its amazing content and free to play ways lets give that a shot. 70 -80% chance that when they experience the game for a certain period of time they will stay that is how gw2 will chomp a market from wow speaking of market if they get it right there gona get a boost. think with your mind not your fanboi fingers
Someone calling GW2 that is unreleased perfect, accusing others of being a fanboi of another game....Find a mirror.
We will see, but arguements like this do not sway anyone, say why it is 'perfect' in your opinion, but none of this counts till people see it and they deliever, if you listened to that guy from Mythic, WAR would of already killed WoW and this would be a moot question.
Call me a fanboi if you want, but I don't play WoW, and they have never gotten 1 cent from me for it. I disliked what EQ had become at the end, let alone taking it further in the WoW version.
Blizzard may actually do a lot of the work for other companies when they release project Titan, once people get the courage to leave, they will have less trouble to keep moving.

Correction, at the moment GW2 is not even a game.
It hangs together with some video footage and a lot of still pictures where the only thing that moves ... is a camera view point to show some dynamics.
First they should produce something, like their proposed multi server PvP system and then let's see.
IF they can make that work btw.
The rest is pure and utter company hype. In fact D3 has been showing more gamplay than GW2 and that one is not even going to be published in 2011 and is not even "a real mmorpg" with all attached known horors of MMO play.

Haven't you noticed that there was a GW2 demo at a lot of game shows last year? Check youtube for a lot ingame footage of that demo. Troll better next time.

... and a new demo is coming out early March. Two playable demos is a little more than just videos, but hey, maybe I'm just crazy.

I suggest you do your research better next time. There's a huge amount of gameplay footage available for those who actually are able to spend 1 minute looking for it. Saying there's little gameplay footage is just ignoring reality.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Neither will beat wow, but Guild Wars 2 will be a mere blip on the meter, whereas SWTOR will have HUGE initial numbers.
Since i'm not in beta, i can't predict the drop off, i have no idea if the game is good or not and have only heard rumors and read first impressions on websites.
Guild Wars 2 has no hype outside a few mmo sites like this one, no hype= not a wow killer.
SWTOR otoh, has every game site talking.
In the end, it's going to be the same problem, WoW is too big, too popular, it has the masses. They are comfy there, and they will stay there. Blizzard probably has some sort of giant content patch planned for a exactly one month after SWTOR comes out so if it has a bad launch all the drop outs go rushing back.

Not necessarily... I voted for GW2 simply because I'm a fan of it and not really expecting it to "topple WoW".
I do, however, expect it to redefine how future MMOs are made. Hopefully we'll see the end fo WoW-clones and the beginning of truly innovative thinking.
Oderint, dum metuant.

You cannot watch that entire video and even REMOTELY think "it's been done already." Also...this video is not a "what we plan on doing," it is "what is in game and WORKING NOW and WILL BE THERE at release."
Okay I'm babbling now, so...I'll stop.

The dark-horses will be Rift & WH40k.
I don't see GW2 as a potential 'WoW killer' but it's possible it could be the game that opens the door for future MMOs.
old after a week? based on the persistent world with the dynamic events that change that world its gona last more then a week alooooooooooooooot more then a week next time do your reasearch on the game i dont like people who judge there really isnt a comparison why someone would want to leave its b2p nt p2p
some bad about it? you cant say that unless you can tell us whats bad about it 3 things should do the trick u said it to no hyping up for an mmorpg if it isnt realesed? why are u saying that its some good and some bad you dont know that so far in gw2 btw everything iv seen has been good this is after watching every single video that was made including the 50 minute wartower video carefully enough to download it on my hard drive and watch it on my tv
They wont leave the mmo they are paying for now for GW2, theyll play GW on the side because they can jump into it at any time.
its not trying to knock wow out where did u get this from? there both there own games wow's majority of players comes from the east they have around 3-4 mil in the west gw1 had more then that but the true fact is who cares for all we know gw2 is free to play that means u buy the game then play the chances of it beating subscriptions of wow are pretty high that game is bieng done to every detail for the players they want to make the world perfect for the players dont be suprised if in 1 year it gets 15-20million players reasons
1 - free to play/b2p
2 - hand made world dynamic events
3 - years in the making hype has grown greatly
4 - allthough lack of info there are videos that give you the feeling that you have played the beggining
i can name more if youd like?
just because u were bored with gw1 do u think youl be able to change the minds of the millions who played it happily? and considering there fixing gw2 to be 100x better u really should check it out watch that then say u dont like it
let me explain to you please wow can have its throne ok. gw2 is in a league of its own it will have its own throne it has its own fanbase its on lore playstyle and its free to play big diffrence between p2p and b2p its like 2 diffrent countrys who have kings understand ?
So the throne will be fractured...some day....Just not by these 2, and today.
hes numbers arent wrong gw1 had over 4 million players and accounts made wow on the other hand had 35 million boxes sold but how many of those people left when bc came out oh wait when wrath came out of waiiiiit when cata came out there are around 14.8 mil people playing wow how do i know u say? my sister is going out with a gm. gw2 is defently going to beat wow in players why u say? because the world is near perfect. theres a big diffrence in mmorpgs in 7 years gw2 is going to be b2p that means no monthly fees please take in account that in every single mmorpg alot of the players will play gw2 u know why because once theyv had there fill of that content they want something new and look its gw2 with its amazing content and free to play ways lets give that a shot.
Go figure.

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release].
Rift ftw :P
THe MMO That unseats WOW will be a Facebook MMO.
SWTOR will have good box sales but Who knows if it will retain subs.
GW2... Seems 50/50 between people that like/want this game and those that don't. I don't think it will even dent WOW.
