General: Five Memorable MMO Baddies

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In today's The List column, MMORPG.com's Bill Murphy takes a fond look back at some of his favorite MMO bad guys. From EVE's Goonswarm to Everquest 2's Curt Schilling, these are the baddies we love to hate. Check out The List and then add a few of your own on our forums.

One of my favorite parts of single-player games is the memorable characters that a lot of them perpetuate. Be it HK-47 or even Tingle (yes, Tingle) a lot of single-player games have the ability to offer us truly weird, funny, loveable, or reviled characters. But MMOs are not without their own fair share. Though until recently the focus of MMOs hasn’t really been on story, that doesn’t mean that the worlds built around a shared player experience haven’t been home to some of gaming’s most feared villains. So with that in mind I felt like this week’s List should be devoted to some of MMO gaming’s most notorious bad guys. Whether they were bosses at the end game or just memorable foes from the early levels of your character’s life, consider this my own personal list of favorite MMO baddies in no real particular order.

Read more of The List.

    Huntards in WoW.

    Every single one of them.

I hate huntards. The ones that roll need on a weapons away from melee toons(im not talking the ones meant for them either). The ones that cause wipes because they cant control thier pet. The ones that never bring enough ammo to an instance or cry for the healer to heal thier pets because they dont turn the taunt off. The ones that pull aggro and then feign so the healer gets bent over and molested.

I hate the villianous huntards. In this case, I do attribute it to malice over whats simply explained as stupidity because they are evil to me.

Show me on the dolly where the nasty huntard touched your weapon... there, there... it will be all right...

The only one that immediately popped to mind when I saw this article is the knee high Shadow Child in Asheron's Call with their fire blast magic.

While I know mostly everyone here is gonna try to add vilains from the older MMO's . i will go ahead and add a more recent villain. Clenched fist of hate. While he wasn't hard for me , he seemed to be hard for some people. Key to beating this guy is to have a medic that knows what he is doing, which would be me.

Some groups would fail at the open hand, or caretaker of souls...  everyone always seemed to have problems at CFOH.  Anyhow, this was one of my favorite heroic runs. Along side with ISD, because I got to fly my gunship.

And the battle of the oversized signatures begins.

Cuuldurach the Glimmer King (before he was made easy, then hard, then easy again)  Albion and Mid had pushover Dragons - we had the Nightmare that wiped.  Oh look - he's summoning Adds....oh Look - the adds are running to get more adds - Oh look...back at Bind point :D!

I WISH the Lich King could be added to this...but he was only memorable in that it was a technical fight that could be difficult until you learned it.  What I would add from WoW would be Nefarion - actually ALL of BWL.  The bosses in there had some really entertaining speech/emotes.  Quite over the top compared to recent releases.

Antharas in the old times of Lineage 2 it was so hard and unpredictable at one point there were rumors it was GM controlled. That was before people were 60+ and people learned he aggro'd to physical archer criticals. The days when you organized 250 people to take down Antharas and you weren't sure you could do it.

Also Orfen was annoying in Sea of Spores, the only epic raid boss I've seen that aggro'd and she had a huge aggro range and insane movespeed.

Foxbat is way cooler in the PnP modules, but yeah, it was smart to put him into the MMO.

Well, if you are going to get all irrate about it. I was referring to a boss inside the Exar Kun instance, which is the tougher heroic in SWG atm. Unless they have added a more difficult one since then?   You can't call Kun himself an epic boss , because he is just too damn easy to kill, but some of the guys before him are a better fight to remember.

Anyhow, I may have been a lil more polite if you did not add the "twighlight zone" music to your response, as if I was some kind of a nut job on here, heh.

In the early days of SWG, running in to a Dark Jedi Master or a Nightsister Elder (before being able to beat them) was a real treat for me.  Scared me to be on Dathomir as a newb trying to level up before the planet was loaded with farmers.

    I enjoyed this list, thanks.

Personally I thought that list was terrible.

I can't think of many memorable ones outside of AC actually, and I've played a lot of MMOs. I think most of the boss designs in MMOs have been very cookie cutter and very nonmemorable. But AC had all kinds of crazy bad guys over the years.

    Bael'zharon

    Grael

    Aerbax

    Gaerlan

    Lady Aerfalle

I do have one memory of early UO just due to it being a surprise and something new to me. I used to hang out in the graveyard (with a lot of other people) north of a town. One day as we were hanging out a couple of skeletons started wandering through. We all paused and then ran up and started killing them. Suddenly tons of undead were wandering through the graveyard towards the town and people ran off to get help while we kept fighting them off. Someone saw a special looking guy wander off into the woods and disappear.

Later on more of this happened and then a portal opened to some special place and people were trying to figure out if we were suppoed to find something in there or not and what was going on.

It was the first live event I had in any game (really only experienced live events in UO and AC in all of my MMO gaming which is sad) and it has always stuck with me how cool it was to just happen while we were all hanging out.

They don't make MMO experiences like they used to.

    5. The dragon (was it Vaults of Night?), DDO.

Extremely bugged encounter, which is the only thing that made it memorable. The only way to have a shot at killing it was by sacrificing someone to her wing buffet, causing her to bug and not fight back.

    4. Tarasque - Anarchy Online.

Having to split into two large groups; one fighting the dragon and the other fighting off the opposing faction players wanting to get the kill. Might be a first love kind of thing, but this fight really got my adrenaline pumping.

    3. The Duke of Jeuno, FFXI.

An overall memorable villain. Spectacular at manipulation, lying and pitting the heroes against eachother. Lots of cut scenes with him that gave you a great back story.

    2. Venril Sathir - EQ2.

The most unforgiving boss for individual player mistakes. Make a mistake and your name flashes in red across everyone's screen, making sure nobody misses that you just caused the wipe. Constantly keep your power in the right area, through power drains and buffs. Make sure you cure the debuff on a short timer, despite constantly getting feared while doing damage. Didn't make it any better that it had several random components, making it heavily dependant on luck.

    1. Nexona - EQ2

Hard. Very, very hard. The amount of moving parts in this encounter makes it a very difficult fight to master. Your damage on the boss has to be a certain level, while everyone else deals with adds that spawn when you click certain items that has to be removed really fast, or else she heals up. Deal too much damage, you wipe. Don't deal enough, she heals up.

Writing this list, I realised that only one of them is because of something other than game mechanics. Character, personality and good story telling doesn't seem to be a large part of making villains in MMOs, I guess.

Mine happens to be from EQ, which apparently isn't cool because its from and older MMO..?

lol Anyway, I really don't even remember his name (any help?) but I'll never forget him.  To this day he is the most successful bane's of my video game existance, ever.  The random high-level (relative to the zone) necromancer that roamed the Qeynos Hills praying on noobs.

EQ was my first MMO and I started out as a Ranger in Surefall.  Naturally I eventually wanted to explore my surrounding and no matter how careful I was, I inevitably ended up facedown kissing dirt after this guy unleashed hell on me out of the blue.  Every once in a while I got lucky, saw him coming and had the opportunity to haul ass for the closest zoneline screaming like a.. well.. noob.  :)

I vowed to get up to his level and come back and whoop him one day.  Well, clearly I didn't really understand the EQ con system cause when I got up to his level and returned, he whooped my ass again yed again lol and I learned about some concept called 'under-conning' lol.  Damn I hated that guy.
