I'm not too concerned about the Green Lantern Corps and "Light powers" being included at launch. We are probably going to see a Green Lantern or two make an appearance in the game at launch, but the Green Lantern mythos is another world all together and would make a great expansion/content update.
Hal Jordan as a mentor for heroes and Sinestro as a mentor for villains; heroes and villains would need to "prove themselves" if they wanted to join the Green Lantern Corps or the Sinestro Corps on Qward (i.e. be a green ring bearer or yellow ring bearer respectively). "Light powers" would still be viable contextually as a powerset if the "exobites" infused in heroes/villains "emulated" Green Lantern/Sinestro powers and abilities and they would later work to earn a ring (green/yellow) which could possibly give them additional powers and abilities or intensify existing ones.
Watched the videos and have to say I am a tad bit disappointed, but understand the reasoning.
You can't color individual pieces of your costume. You just pick the 3 colors for your entire outfit. You can't make your gloves black and your pants red or vice versa. If your gloves and pants are both considered a primary color, and your primary color is black then both are black. There is no way to change it. The character creator is much more limited than CoX. Even though CoX only offers 2 colors, that is 2 colors per slot that can be setup. This is 3 colors overall.
But like I said, I understand their reasoning. They don't want people looking like Rainbow Brite in their universe. CoX had some people with really fugly costumes. On the flipside they also had some very creative people that pulled off amazing looking costumes.
My main disappointment right now is no GL inspirations. Come on DCUO the movie is coming out soon. GL is my fav comic.
I am a bit over the fence here. CO and CoX had some really cool people making their personal costume with the variance of colours and body types. I feel it is a step back, and when everyone will of course compare it to CO and CoX, I somehow don't get why this limitation to 3 colours. In the time I played CO I always marveled at how creative most gamers were. Every time I saw some new and cool hero. One was making litereally a Rainbow Hero, and it just was original and cool as well. Why not? It surely will be one of the major critique of many CO and CoX player trying out DCU. Not a very bright choice of action IMO.

This is designing your MMO for the lowest common denominator. They know that some players will mess things up and have silly looking costumes because they can’t design something decent in Character Gen. So we have to put up with less design options because of the morons who can’t work out how to mix and match colours.
Another example of dumbing down in the industry for sure.

You've asserted all that because of DCUO's three colour scheme? Don't forget there's going to be a plethora of costume options aside from colour (i.e. clothing and other accessories).
You can wear the insiginias? Does that mean you can join the Batman Family and Superman Family etc?
Maybe not join in the literal sense, but as max level players you work on earning Iconic armor, which a lot them have the insignias of the famouse heroes and villains you get them from. Like the House of El battle suit from Superman or the Batman tech armor.
As far as people worrying about customizing being limited to 3 colors, this wasn't just done to prevent butt-ugly costumes polluting the streets but because the items dropped have the ability to blend in with your color scheme.
So if you get Harlequinns jester hat, instead of it being Black/Red/White but your costume is Blue/Green/Orange, it will change it's colors to suit your outfit, no stupid hodge podge looking characters like in say WoW where you sometimes have to look like a moron for stats pre level 80.
Beyond that, other "restrictions" are in place, to give you options to change and progress over time which neither CO or COX does well. This has a true itemization system similar to many other MMOs like EQ/WoW/AoC etc, so you might start out as that guy in the speedo with a simple looking staff, but if you choose to, you can be that badass in the asian style armor with the tech staff as the game progresses.
Last but not least, complicated animations and a robust itemization factor heavily into less options, but allow them to be more future proof. What I mean by that is, because there is less variables to worry about they are free to work with more unqiue and awesome amror pieces without worrying too much if this guy is a 10 foot tall walking tree or 3 feet tall but as wide as a bus.
Me personally I had issues with both CoX and CO because they never felt like you really progressed, it was numbers but I always felt a lack of evolution with my toon, heres to hoping DCUO does it well!
The GL folks would fall under Batman and the "Technology" origin. Well, unless you wanted to go with the old school GL where it would fall under Wonder Woman and the "Magic" origin. They would not fall under Superman and the "Metahuman" origin.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
I am not saying the whole of DCUO or even their character creation is dumbed down. But the decision to stop players making up their own colour schemes on individual items is an example of dumbing down. Less choice because they think too many players will be too stupid to make the right choices, that’s dumbing down.

Your understanding of "dumbing down" must be different to mine then because I still see an awful lot of freedom and flexibility even with a three-colour scheme. Sure, a choice of three colours for the overall scheme does sound confining, but you're still going to be able to choose from a palette (i.e. an entire spectrum) of colours for your scheme, resulting in thousands of possible combinations. It's like painting a room: yes, it might be only one room to paint, but I'm not restricted in the colours to paint it.
In the scheme of things (no pun intended), there are of course going to be other ways to give your character a unique look (i.e. costume). You could have a hundred heroes/villains standing next to each other with the exact same colour scheme, but what they're wearing may be different and the differences may be as subtle as one hero/villain wearing an eye patch on either their left or right eye.
I really wish the mmo's that focus on character creation would take a page from BioWare and release a demo character creator prelaunch that you can then save to the system like with Dragon Age. Somehow I always end up spending all day making my character on launch day becuase just when I get him right the server crashes.
I spent my first evening on CoH and CoV just designing my costume, and I would hardly say I have any artistic talent at all. Trial and error were how I came up with something really good. So for me less options can only be playing to those who can't be bothered to spend some time in Charecter Gen. That to me is dumbing down, but from the pics you can obviously still come up with something unique.

Yeah. In my years in Cox and CO I have seen so many creative people with great ideas around me.

Yes, you are able to pick three colours then adjust which three you will use in each item you wear, that is better than what the article seemed to be saying. But you can’t pick red white and blue and then have black boots for example. Some people will say that this system means that more better looking costumes will come out of character gen and I think that is true.
But the alternative, having a tutorial on good costume design and more choice would have been better. Yes, many would skip the tutorial and make an awful costume, but I am a Superman kind of guy all for more freedom.
I liked the look of the powers though we did not see much on their selection, the video is CG and play they try to fit a lot in. The animations and overal way the character moves were top rate. If you are a comics fan watch out as the voice over contains a spoiler, but its one you will have had to have had your head in the sand not to know about.
Three colors. Six years later, and CoX still does not have three colors. So many costume pieces cry out for at least three colors.
Considering the "Four Color" history of comics, I'm surprised we do not have four.
It is nice to see that DCUO is going to sport three... perhaps one day CoX will catch up, eh?
thats because in city of heroes you can decide to make each piece differing colors...(no you dont have the three colors you choose to choose from you have all colors including black)
Or didnt you notice that you had to choose the 3 colors for your entire costume inthe DCUO.
So if anything its DCUO that needs to catch up.....even champions lets you color each costume piece.
Also you will notice you can color the powers in City of Heroes...i doubt you can do that in DCUO....they seam focused to impose everyone to a specifc theme.
Which is ok i guess...it fits more with their story...
But then if you watch the videos you also noticed you had to choose a specifc theme as well..which dictated what your costume would look like....which means there is going be alot of people who look alot alike.
I will assume thats one of the set-ups for their cash shop...(one way they reel people in)
Will agrea. I tried many times tring to play the game. It always crash on character creation. Glad I did not preorder it. Game looks like it going to fail.

I do miss the slim adult model, Joker or Red Robin are not muscular like Superman, nor are they tiny sidekick size.

It turns out that you CAN colour individual costume pieces; new character creation/gameplay video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14uH8pj6AEU

A cash shop that is purely for costume looks is fine, but they always seem to stray into power buffs and xp potions before long.
