I'm still waiting for those epic "Many vs Many" battles SE promised us. People reaching Rank 30s now and they're still gang banging marmots and moles. I mean, WTF.

Why are they doing that? There are drakes and the MIB roach looking things, seen pirate mobs and other humans, the rat humanoid creatures and I am not even 20 yet... not that I can fight them but I have seen them. What about the Amalj'a (lizard people)?
Think folks need to get away from the Aether camps. some 2nd floor dungeons should be around rank 20+ and there are different mobs there compared to outside, like globes of fire, saw a pugilist Miqote (who saw me and I was insta killed when she caught up).
Suppose there isn't the variety you would expect to see, but why are they staying on Marmots and Moles?
I was up in East Thanalan in a duo and we came across one of those little Catuar (not sure if that the right name) cacti and we were doing quite well as it was orange, so when we got it down to about 25% health its started to spin and hit us with a spray of cactus needles, ko'd us in one move, so look out for that guys a swell.
I must say as I progress up into harder mobs areas its great to see each mob has special skills that really need to be avoided unless you are many levels above them, the moles caught me out quite a few times until I learned to listen out for the unique sound they make before they burrow. Also been caught out by those Bogey's in the caves a few times as well with the teleport move.
Really looking to see where the combat is going its getting more interesting by the day, and thanks for the Fuguar pointer I'm farming them for mats at the moment so will avoid that move.
Cal.
I wouldn't call them interesting combat mechanics. It's the same in a lot of other MMOs really.
The Cacti AoE move isn't all that different from the slugs I encountered on Battle leves. They do a little squirm, start glowing a purple colour then bam, everyone within 15-20foot radius KO'd.
I am definitely not seeing this "higher level of AI" that SE was raving about in last years interviews.
Aye, it's basically just taking what other MMOs had in raid/boss encounters and adding it to basic mobs. Basically at X% health or X% time engaged mob will do Y attack or special. It's not a higher level of AI.
But I can also see it from the other peoples POV in that it does add a bit of challenge to the otherwise basic and boring mobs the game uses.
Agree. Just because you stick on a do-or-die mechanic to a mob doesn't make the AI amazing and innovative. It makes the fight boring up until that mechanic comes around, and once you avoid it you win.

This is another example of the confusion that sets in on me when players are unhappy about one game or another for its mechanics. This is not focused on FFXIV, but a general observation.
I don’t know what any one wants in a MMO anymore. It’s no wonder developers are struggling to make players happy.
What are “interesting combat mechanics”? What is “higher forms of AI”? Making the AI too smart simply means it will win no matter what.
People complain about tank and spank – too boring. People complain when mob does X at Y health – too predictable. People complain about mob being unfair – too hard.
What do you want a mob to do when they fight? Have their own AI hotbar and they select abilities like we do? 1,1,1,2,3,3,3,5, Oh Shit! 999999. Drink a potion at 30% health, try running away when they know they are screwed. What then?
Square seems to have put some effort into making combat a discovery process. What is wrong with that? People will figure out what melee attack disables the Cactuar’s 1000 needles or whatever, and then poof! encounter is simple.

He who keeps his cool best wins.
