I left a few weeks ago after months of playing since the population was dying, my entire guild is either in WoW or EQ2. In EU anyway most of players are waiting for WoW or just for their sub to expire and the 'new' players you see are mostly alts. Save your Euro's and invest in a copy of any other MMORPG on this site.
In answer to your question people do still play this game, but that number is getting less each month.
Man I would have loved to see this game blossom out to be somehting REALLY good.
I seriosuly LOVED this game it was fun....very immersive with the crafitng and all.....and to have a crafting AND an adventureing calss was a cool thing too...
but alwell...maybein the future by some miracle this game will come to life....but I am jsut praying.

I just stopped playing recently as well. I honestly did enjoy the game for the first month I played it but it rapidly dawned on me that there just wasn't a whole lot of quests to do as an alternative to level grind and crafting just wasn't my cup of tea ( which is a major selling point for Horizons ). As a lower leveled player I felt a little handicapped by the fact that the mobs I was hunting were also needed by higher level players for crafting so frustration was a factor as well. Nothing like killing one golem at a time ( when they would spawn ) only to see one or two lvl 100' come through and round up the entire area and commence to killing my XP source for whatever trinkets they needed. Somehow I found this way of doing business a little flawed.
Anyways after I quit Horizons I picked up Ryzom and again that seemed to be a crafter centric game with little to no quests ( looked pretty nice though ) and ended up cancelling it a week before the free 30 days expired. Now playing EQ2 and enjoying it very much.
My wife and I still play (I have done since Beta) ... I play a dragon and yes we have
had our ups and downs, but I still enjoy the game a LOT.
Currently RL commitments mean I can't be logged on for the time that I want to
but after Christmas and into the new year I am really looking forwards to the
Ancient Dragon Rites of Passage and the new Dragon Lairs that are coming into the
game.
i am still playing (EU)
its still a lot of fun in the game but many people leaving .
now wow is out, think i am heading 2 it also.
Alot of people around Christmas time always appear to leave. You have the college students who don't have internet access at home and also the parents (which HZ has a large amount of) that are too busy preparing (wrapping presents, putting up decorations and having work parties).
Every MMORPG I have played had their numbers dwindle around the festive time.
Im with majoch, yes it was good the first month or so, but now it is the laughing stock of the MMORPG and its easy to see why.
Poor graphics engine, barely handle Tazoon, the reason why a new graphics card makes no difference and I bought one on the assumption it did, is basically because graphics engine doesnt allow graphics card to use its groovy features properly and so a lot of it gets done by the processo. Thats how out of date it is.
No adventure quests, okay one decent one at lvl 10 but thats it just grind to lvl 100. Why do they have it so that odd numbered lvls doesnt do anything (or however they are now)apart from extra skill points is becaue AE wants you to grind.
The economy is based around the pawn broker and the only cash sink is The Vielo and portals, no item decays leaves players able to accumulate wealth easily.
There is still combat lag and the world cache system is not efficient since it leaves your hard drive full of tiny files which increases fragmentation whereas other MMORPGS use the existing swap file to good effect.
It is just no longer fun and that is only after a year, few peolpe remain 500 at best on EU servers and Im surprised its still listed on this website.
I will also be surprised if it is still here xmas 2005 when WISH, Vanguard and Dark and Light should be upon us and WoW/EQ2 will be settled.
Horizons can't compete because they are already bankrupt and they have a skeleton crew, the situation will only get worse.
Look on this forum see how few people read this forum , look on other websites and say Horizons is rubbish and you will not get a response since everyone knows it already.
Yes I used to like Horizons but I opened my eyes to other games and have never looked back. Im writing this to educate people that you are supporting a low quality game managed by people who feel it is morally acceptable to leave other companies in debt to clear theri own.
Hash...have you not kept up with this game at all?
ANOTHER COMPANY BOUGHT THEM OUT AND ARE GONNA IMPROVE THIS GAME. If what I read was right....then the new company is gonna work with thw game and make it better......I;m sure this tgame will turn out to be alot better once they get going with it......but it is gonna take alot of time.....and personally...i thought this game had awesome graphics.....a quests were repetitive but i loved this game...and the craqfting system was the coolest I have ever seen.......
but seriously.....the game will get better i have hopes for it...becasue this game was alot of fun and I thought it was really good. Just the Artifact sucks.....so with the new comp everythign will get better.

Okay I put "(or whoever they are now)" in the wrong place. It is not a completely different company though is it? That's why the sale had to be approved..In fact there is an article on this very website.
So which company then? Microsoft? Mythic? EA?
No, Tulga with their fabulous website!
Yay Horizons is saved because Tulga (who?!) bought it! So how many games have Tulga made and whats their revenue? They been going how long now?
AE were/are in debt then magically bought out by Tulga and everything is rosy? How many millions of dollars do Tulga have anyway?
Too many people have been saying this game will get better for too long. That excuse wears a bit thin after 12 months don't you think?
Yes it's true Tulga bought AE or Horizons and I am assuming it will be called Tulga's Horizon here once all the paperwork is signed on the dotted line but the way I read it is the same crew that was Artifact Entertainment is shipping to Tulga games so unless Chris T hires new devs and gets a good Public Relations firm to hype it up a lot they will still be in the same boat they were in that brought them to chapter 11 in the first place.
So far we have seen a lot of empty promises and the loyal fan base that remains deserves to see some major improvements in the near future. One of my other gripes was how they managed mob spawn and I think due to the current hardware the system only allowed mobs to spawn when an adventurer was in the vicinity to keep bandwidth down or only allowed a certain amount of mobs to be in world at any given time. Whichever system they are using was somewhat frustrating as you would think you were in an empty area and all of a sudden a dozen aggro creatures would materialize right on top of you.
See i don't know much about tulga....and i don't know if it is tru about all of the AE devs going to tulga but:
I am gonna still have high hopes for this game....it was a good game just lacked everythign promised...i mean the crafting was awesome...it was ALOT of fun.....when i did fight i enjoyed it...and I like ho most areas had to seperate area......areas to mine and gather materials and areas to fight.....I thoguht that was cool.....but i love the smithing.....mine....smelt.....leather work.....forge......you know it was alot of steps but it was interactive and immersive.....
but we will have to see what happens from here.

Couple of points, but first I wanted to sidetrack this conversation a little bit to address this. I am a System Administrator for the US Navy and have been to pretty much every computer/networking school the Navy runs, and some schools and the civilan sector. That was to give a little background so you don't think I'm crazy when I make this next statement: If your operating system is using NTFS you DO NOT have to defragment your hard drive. Companies waste millions of dollars and hours of time doing something that is absolutely useless. Now before you all think I'm a crack pot, let me explain:
NTFS (New Technologies File system, every windows version since NT 4.0 comes with it) is a random read/write process (this is verifiable, it will tell you this in Technet or if you do a google you can probably come up with it). That means that if you have a blank NTFS hard drive and write a file to it, it's not going to put the file in sectors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. It's going to use: 1,694; 1,986,999; 306; 11,645 etc. (these are made up numbers, it's random). In FAT (File Allocation Table, the other Files System Windows uses) it writes things sequentially. That means it writes file #1 in sectors 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; the say you put another file on it, the other file will use secotrs 6; 7; 8; Now say file #1 gets bigger, it wants to use 6 but it can't so it goes to 9 this file is now fragmented. With NTFS it writes it all randomly so it fragments the file all on it's own.
The only speed increase you may see, is it puts all the files close to the center of the disk so the heads don't have to go as far to read the data.
All of this can be fact checked if you search for it on the internet.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest. I really liked Horizons when I played for the free trial and played a couple of months after that. I quit becasue of lack of quests, couldn't find anyone to group with, or even show me what I'm supposed to do next. They had a lot of interesting races not just the standard fair. I really wish they'd scrap it and come out with HZ 2.
NTFS out of the box cannot handle what Horizons does to a hard drive. I watched that game send mine into a continual tailspin for months. The continaul reallocation I was sure was going to cause my hard drive to burn out. So I went and got another hard drive and thats all I ran on it was Horizons because I wasn't going to sacrifice my main drives for that POS. So whereas yes NTFS DOES REDUCE the need to defrag it in fact causes your hard drive to work that much harder causing many of the reports of failed hard drives early on.
Regardless Horizons is a sad story of misplaced faith trust and hope that many had for it. Swapping MMO's is no fun and Horizons promised a lot early on to people that liked its concept. 9 months of inaction and 3 months of bungling have led to order having at most during primetime 400 people and Chaos at absolute most 500 during primetime and it has been that low since September so its not the holidays.
As said kind of sad.
Horizons is a dead game walking.
Just as WISH was.
Once Tulga realise the gulf between the cost of development and maintenance and the income from the pitifully few hardcore, fanpeeps they'll either merge ALL servers into one, or cancel the project and repackage the various portions of the game, the tech, the ideas, into a new projects, or sell them off.
Sometimes a company, or product, is worth more when carved up and sold in portions.
See i don't know much about tulga....and i don't know if it is tru about all of the AE devs going to tulga but:

Read the FAQ for Dark n Light. It promises pretty much everything once promised by Horizons, and far more.
There some fundamental differences between WISH and DnL.
Wish was slammed, and lost a lot of potential customers for 3 reasons:
Graphics.
Point and Click
Quest content.
DnL has vastly superior graphics, even at this stage of beta, and a much bigger world.
DnL has PnC controls AND WASD, which many players wanted for WISH
WISH relied too much on it's revolutionary LIVE content/quest system. DnL will not make the same mistake.
The last one contributed to it's downfall. Wish BELIEVED it had 60,000 subscribers for the beta, but actually many had signed up 2 or more times to have a better chance of getting into beta. Had they used an IP address logger they would have discovered this. As a consequence WISH had far fewer potential players than it thought, and that dwindled further when players noticed the graphics and lack of WASD controls. They could not sustain a team of 32 developers (there words, not mine) on such a small subcriber base. They needed that many to keep producing the live content.
DnL will not fall into this trap. They have 130,000 signed up for beta, plus all the WISH refugees, and they DID use an IP tracker. They also have revolutionary world building technology which means a computer program contructs the land (no tiling involved) and controls other stuff, such as mob/npc movement, the building of new towns, and so on. with the program doing all this, they don't need such a large team of devs, or can concentrate on other areas.
As for WISH, well it did not promise that much.
Dnl will have castles, which you can seige, conquer, with your guild, something Horizons beta promised.
DnL will have dynamic, realistic weather, which never made it into HZ.
DnL will have dynamic world changes, lands being conquered, changing hands, fortesses too; HZ promised but did not deliver.
We wait and see, but if looks promising. You can't slam the game BEFORE it has been released/cancelled, and you cannot point to other failures, unless you see a common thread in them all.
I wasn't slamming it before it arrives. I was merely pointing out that games NEVER deliever on their promises. They all lie.
I agree, if it turns out by some miracle they are telling the truth, it will be a great game. And I will buy it:). IF it is as great as they are hyping it. Don't forget, HZ had(has) all that "revolutionary" technology behind it too. That is just a marketing gimmic.
Too true I'm afraid.
We'll just have to wait an see.
