I play in Besaid, and honestly, I've never seen such quiet and unhelpful chat channels. Sure, linkshell chats are always going, and multiple LSs are nice, but this must be the most anti-social game I've seen when it comes to general chats.
In other games, the general/trade etc etc chats are always very lively. Here, it's so quiet, even when people ask questions, or to buy and sell things.
Are all servers like this?

I don't play XIV but I do think that it is something that carried over with veterans of XI that decided to play both games or make the switch. Over the years I played XI I found that general chat was non-existent unless (1) new players were having trouble with the game or using chat channels, (2) people were shouting for things like Teleport or (3) during events people were advertising what they had in their bazaar (e.g. the Easter Egg event). Don't be dismayed by this quiet though. The Final Fantasy players are among the most polite and civil you will find, even if they are largely unwilling to help you if it does not fit in with their needs. That's really the only downside, you won't experience anything like rampant immaturity.
(1)TL:DR must be your way of saying that thinking hurts. Then again, this may explain why it looks like you responded to the post without using your brain.
(2) It's not about community, is it? You just have nothing better to do.
Who would want to talk to people on an MMORPG, I mean why play a single player game for free when you can pay a subscription to ignore people online?
There is no etiquette in MMORPGs today, everyone is rude, loud, disgusting and if not that... quiet and reclusive....
MMORPG's golden age is dead...
If it weren't for the troll humor, I might quit for good....
There's two reasons for this.
There aren't any global channels except linkshells. My LS is usually pretty lively, but chatting in the world, not so much.
The bigger problem: the chat system is currently a complete mess. Even if you reorganize your two tabs, your chat tab is still going to be filled with tons of useless stuff that make actually chatting with it much more difficult than it should be.
There are lots of complaints about the game, but for me, the chat mess is my biggest one atm. I've sent some feedback about it, and I'm sure others have as well, so hopefully they address it soon.
Nobody ever seems to mention the insanely limited character count per message either.
Yes, my server is pretty quiet as well. Hardly anyon ever says anything. But then again, it sure beats Barrens chat.
Talking in general chat was always considered rude in FFXI and it seems to have transferred over to XIV.
I wish every MMO adopted this as i find it more annoying when nonsense is constantly typed out than when it's quiet and i can chat with my linkshell/guild mates.
This is surprising to me as it isn't something I've experienced or heard from anyone else that has played the game. Perhaps it is something that you have encountered with only your particular clique or server(s), but no matter what it seems true that the echoing pin drop has transferred to XIV from XI.
Personally, were I to be interested in playing this game I would be wondering why people are giving the game a chance when it is clear that there are plenty of things that were grossly neglected. The extra 30 days just doesn't cut it when people do have to make a critical and quick decision as to whether or not, in this economy, they could be saving that subscription money rather than giving it to a company who proves they just don't get MMORPGs. To me it just doesn't cut it anymore to say that the game will likely be a niche game like XI was, as we now have a history of the company not getting it across 8 years and two games.
Back to the point at hand though, it is one thing to argue against a sort of 'Barrens Chat' mentality where pure idiocy is constantly spouted and choosing to not want to be bothered with others. The first sort of thing is usually argued against by people saying to just turn of the chat channel, something that just isn't helpful at all and simply supports the problem. The second sort of thing makes saying turn off the chat channel more sensible, as these people don't want to be bothered by anyone anyway. Then again, in the second sort of thing there is always the question of why these people are playing a game that is meant to be multi-player. Not wanting to be bothered by idiots is one thing and not wanting to be bothered at all is clearly another.
Not wanting to be bothered at all is what I get from Alders here and, honestly, it's what I got from the servers I played on in four years with XI. The community is polite and almost always was when they spoke, but by and large they just didn't want to be bothered with but a select few people. Then again, such is the state of MMORPGs these days but at least the Final Fantasy folks were polite about it!

Ummm, there isn't a global chat. The best you have is /shout and that carries MAYBE 100 yards around you, the /say is maybe 50 feet. Seriously, next time you think its quiet stop and look around you. If your standing in an open field with 15 people around you that are killing mobs, well thats about whats in range of your /shout. So if you think those 15 people should all be doing /shout all the time (and hoping you dont move out of range and lose the conversation). Really its the system, not the population being anti-social.
The chat mechanics are designed around linkshells for global communication. They built it all on the conecpt that long distance communication is done through magical means, link pearls. And to get your magical link pearl, you have to be given one from someone in the linkshell its attuned to. Any other communications is on a realistic basis, what your normal voice would carry in a normal situation. They dont have cell phones with conference calling funcitons, they have linkshells with link pearls.
And there is no mystical global chat channel that some how allows the imprint of thoughts from millions of people directly to thier brains without even knowing who or where they all are. Realism, its all based on realism. Ask yourself how you would explain how the global chat channel can exist in reality (even a magical one) and then build it for a game. Thats what they did here. They came up with a way it COULD exist in a magical world and COULD be explained on how it worked from an in character perspective.
Your suposed to be involved in the linkshells, your supposed ot get link pearls - up to 8 of them. Really, you should get more than one. I know some like to call thier linkshell thier 'guild', thats all fine, but that shouldn't stop you from joining 2 or 3 social linkshells just to chatter in, a crafting one to trade in, hell build one of your own and invite people to it that just want to bitch about the chat system if you want. You have 8 slots.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
My understanding is yes, pretty much all the servers are similar in this regard. Personally, I don't miss a global chat channel all that much. In other games, in my experience, it was a trade-off having such a channel. For almost everything positive, helpful or just funny said in one of these channels, there was something uncalled for or just spamming. These types of channels can and do get abused.
That said, yup, outside of a LS/friends it can feel very quiet in FFXIV.
pie.
FFXI didn't have any global chats so if you were not in the right zone or in town at the right town you missed any chat. Even when you were in town you rarely saw anyone chatting unless it was a person lookinf or giving teleports. Even with the seek function it didnt matter much because I was always missing out on parties, missions because I was off farming crafting materals while people were shouting in Jueno. Heck even if you ran to the other section of JEuno you would miss out on everything.
People talk about how polite the FFXI community was. To me thats such a crock of $@%. They were porbably some of the worst players I have ever ran across in an mmo. So many years of constant bickering, players sticking around til they got what they wanted and they would jet. Players verbally bashing each other for every little thing. Your subjob is to low, it sucks, you gear sucks, what dont have Juggy you suck. what no sniper ring, your gimped, MPK MPK MPK!!! Thats only the tip of my 8 years in FFXI, it was a lot worse for me on my server.
I wont lie the Barren chat is bad at times, but at least the server shows it has a brain even if its not firing on all cylinders.
Alders is right. it was and is considered rude to tzalk in general chat. those are mainly used for some little jokes or emote stuff. the real chatting oes on in the linkshells. yes if you are not in a 'LS that liked to chat a lot it can be very very bad for your own mood (i quit some LS' in ffxi because nobody said anything for hours.
but that's how it is. they liked it in ffxi and took it. funny thing: SE never actually intended to make a FFXI-HD but the players are forcing them to do so. not by posting "wagh this gamer sucks" no by just playing the type of gameplay they want. tactics and other stuff for battles are developted. SE will not alter this and go along. This way the community shapes the way the game is played.
but i get offtopic again sorry. If you don't like it quiet search a person you know in your server or go to http://www.ffxivpro.com/ type in the server forums that you seek a linkshell (almost all of them are socials).
have a nice weeked peeps.
edit: @Animatorkid: lost Nidhogg cuz you got Darters? no seriously what server did you play? let me guess endgame elitist LS right? yeah that's where all the idiots hang out.
I know what you mean , man. I played on besaid up until I stopped playing, and it was exactly what you are talking about right here.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
Not on my server Mysidia. There is no zone chatting unless you shout anyway. People do talk locally here an I find sometimes people shouting to talk as if there was a zone chat an gets pretty funny...but it happens here.

Yes Besaid is quiet but honestly does it matter I shout when I get to camps or ask around if I need help I am in 3 active Ls and there is always discussion there last thing this game need is the opportunity for Barrens chat. I think you got the wrong Idea this is a social game and no one want to pollute the chat with pointless discussion in shout its a waste. Its easy enough to just chat in the LS and talk with folks nearby.

Might have something to do with all the gamepads being used. Not exactly friendly for typing.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
It's pretty quiet. Get to a camp say hi to someone, ask what they're crafting, if they'd like to go on a leve etc. and you get completely ignored. Bunch of anti-social Asperger's in this game. If they made the chat system less shitty it might help out a little.
When I played XI, there was always someone chatting in Jeuno or WG.
"The Final Fantasy players are among the most polite and civil you will find, even if they are largely unwilling to help you if it does not fit in with their needs. "
Now there is a counterdiction in terms.
Really?
Never was that way on Pandemonium. General, and Shout were quite active.. people talking, joking around, etc.
Guess it comes down to which server you were on.
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
I encountered plenty of weird social idioms in FFXI that I would be quite happy to never deal with again. The one about "inspecting other people is rude" always struck me as particularly mind-boggling. I guess it's no more arbitrary than, say, the disrespectfullness of having a hat on during a formal occasion.
I was told by some friends that spoke japanese is that it was due to the translation on the /check emote. Apparently it translated more like "Soandso is sizing you up", so it was considered rude to do without asking first.
Really though as stated previously regarding the topic, in FFXI unless you were in whitegate (juneo earlier), the chat would be quite devoid as most people were busy yapping with their LS. This has carried forward to the new title so look around on the fansites to find a LS on your server to suit your needs more.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
I am glad i don't have to see people like you spam /say and /shout. I am tired of the "could of", u for you and counterdiction [sic] spamming internet crowd. I prefer an intelligent conversation in my Linkshell.
It's enough to say that it is a contradiction, no need to add "in terms" which makes even less sense.
Contradiction
In classical logic, a contradiction consists of a logical incompatibility between two or more propositions. It occurs when the propositions, taken together, yield two conclusions which form the logical, usually opposite inversions of each other. Illustrating a general tendency in applied logic, Aristotle’s law of noncontradiction states that “One cannot say of something that it is and that it is not in the same respect and at the same time.”
By extension, outside of classical logic, one can speak of contradictions between actions when one presumes that their motives contradict each other.
Good Job seabeast for making my point for me.
What is so sad about your post is you think you're highlighting the faults of one person, but the reality is it's not the one you think.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
Yeah i totally agree with this.
Shiva was predominantly a JP heavy server and the people that would go off on rants in chat would be excluded from party invites.
I do agree with the poster that said the community seeming to be more civil was bullshit. I saw it happen all too often. Players will be as nice as they needed to be to get what they wanted and bounce. While having to rely on others for everything does seem to build a stronger community, i also feel a lot of that is a false sense of togetherness.
LOL, kids...go figure.
