So how far along in the beta process before people who never played Tribes start complaining that skiing is over powered and unfair and it gets nerfed making the game slow as molasses?
I just researched skiing. I played Starsiege: Tribes in my early days (the late 90s were early for a 26 year old), but Skiing wasn't a "feature" until Tribes 2. I never knew the exploitation of that physics engine in 1 was called "skiing", I just kind of assumed I sucked (und I diiid). Sorry, Rocky Horror Season after all.
Totally my bad, and had I played the sequel I would have known this.
In fact, gasp, I didn't even know Tribes: Vengeance came out in 2004. But now, I'm curious about it's single-player campaign.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

Consider the slack cut.
Consider pointing out in the next article regarding this game, that a huge portion of the most popular maps for Tribes 1 and 2 were in fact player made map packs, using the games map editor which they included I believe.
Made by Ga devs kills my hopes for the games right away.
Don't know what all thats about, Hi-Rez is a pretty good developer. GA is a really fun game.
Blah GA I find to be pretty bland.Heres to hoping they dont make Tribes to be anything like it but if it was anything close to what Fallen Empire:Legions is and plays like I will be happy,I never played Tribes but I have FE:L's and that game was a blast when it was up.
If you don't know about something -- like it is quite clear that you don't know about Tribes or the Tribes universe -- don't write like you do know about it. That way you avoid looking like a rank amatuer, which you and Jon somehow manage to do all the time.
Thanks.
Maybe instead of being a troll you could actually take the time to discuss your differences with the article.
If you are going to criticize someone, at least list the reasons instead of just trolling.
Skiing was definitely an unforseen sideeffect of the game's engine. It required you to "jump" *repeatedly* when you were landing on a downward slope, this stopped the friction of hitting the ground from slowing you down for some reason. Now in the wee early days, you basically had to hammer the hell out of the space bar, and it was annoying. Then someone kindly wrote a simple script to allow you to just hold the spacebar down when you wanted to ski. I believe they added that as basic functionality in one of the later patches to Tribes 1 so everyone would be on the (un)even playingfield. Tribes 2 had it from the start, but its terrain wasn't so easy to ski on as Tribes 1, which angered quite a few people (more hoofing it, less fun zoom zoom).

Infalible comes off sounding like a real pompous ass..
Tribes was not at all that big of a deal ever. And it certanly was not and sort of precursor for any modern FPS like Halo. There is a reason why the Tribes series died 10 years ago. Its what happens to lame games that only a few like to play. Now when they decide to make Quake, Unreal , or Half Life into MMOs then there will be news worth an article. Tribes was just a very small player in a large market for games that acually are worth making into MMOs. Sorry but I never liked Tribes thought it a bit lame for my tastes. Like I said make Quake, Unreal, or Half Life into MMOs and im there. Tribes Blah.
Always good to see a different format to add to the online stable. We have so few variations on game play I am hoping this does well and shows what can be done online.
I didn't feel like reading through 5 pages of replies to see if anyone knew but you can get tribes 2 for free off of fileplanet, at least you could 2 weeks ago. While the officila servers have been shut down there is a patch you can download to be able to play it again. Just google for it.
I pretty much cut my teeth on FPS'ers with the original tribes then played tribes 2 for a while. I really loved that game. I just hope they do it right by making it inot an mmo.
I never played Tribes for some reason, I guess I was more into Unreal Tournament around that time. How close was Tribes compared to Planetside? I mean, did you have portable places to spawn to when you died? Did you need some type of Certificate to operate certain vehicles?
Were there bases to take over or well fortified bunkers? Were the vehicles single manned or could 3 or more control them ( like turrets on a tank ). Were there bonuses for controlling a certain amount of the world at any given time, or a penalty for not controlling certain places?
I think this is a good move on Hi-Rez' part. I believe this move is in response from their Global Agenda fans and critics on the AvA portion. Everyone told them it needed to be more open to allow for actual realtime action all within a single map. But Hi-Rez went along with their original plan to see if it would actually work. In the end, it did but not at the success they wanted. So now I believe they will actually take the IP of Tribes, which makes sense for a single open world map with many factions fighting, and make something their original players were asking for.
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

Hey, cut me some slack, folks.

lets hope they dont screw it up
this sounds more than just awesome, sounds nearly too perfect :P
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
I LOVED Tribes and Tribes 2. Can anyone say SCRIPTING!!!
I have yet to play any FPS that meets T2's features and abilities. Custom loadouts, jetpacks, skins, scripting support, vehicles, deployable assets.
I can't remember the name, but I remember one script pack that had deployable forcefields, walls, and turrets.... that one was the best!
Vengeance sucked compared to T2
It will be interesting to see what kind of RMT this game has since pretty much every multiplayer game coming out recently has it in some form.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
whatever happened to tribes 3 anyway? i heard about it and then it was as if it disappeared... meh guess we will never know :P
Hopefully this one wont be a big disappointment compared to its older Loved predecessors

SHAZBOT!
Finally Tribes will live again! Mhahahaha. Oh Tribes 2, I played you so much before I got into MMOs. I can't wait to hear more info.
Tribes got me hooked on online gaming. Later came the MMOs.
I do hope this turns out well. Also that they keep the hacks out. Hacks are what got me to quit playing FPSs.
