Whats with the little fluffy race trend?

I've been seeing a new trend lately in MMOs that turns me almost completely off of an MMO.

When I'm looking at a new hyped up MMO thats coming out, and I'm trying to let go of the part of my mind saying "You know what its going to be, the same grind, a combat system thats almost identical to all the others, etc etc." I start looking at the game and it actually starts sounding decent, all the sudden I'm like "Wow, this might actually be something I might try..."

Then I look at my favorite part, the races/classes section. And what do I see?

Some fluffy fucking cute little race!!

I know that SOME people like these, but I'm not some anime MMO gamer, that style floats some peoples boat, but not mine. And there are games that seem like they are TRYING to be serious, with good graphics, that seem non-cartoonish, and then all of the sudden, some stupid 3 foot tall little race is listen underneath the real races.

TERA with its "Porporis" things, Allods with its little "Gibberlings" (Possibly the worst of them all) and even Guild Wars 2 with its "Asurans" and countless other lesser known MMOs.

Now, I'm not AS mad about the Asurans on Guild wars, they are tolerable, I can handle them, but still... WHY!!!??

I would much rather them just NOT be there. Guild wars has always been a game that was fantasy enough to feel lost in a magic world, but also serious enough to not feel like your playing Maplestory or some crap. The asuran just makes it that much harder to take seriously. However, I'm not tripping on them too much.

The gnomes on WoW are where I draw the line, those were pretty sissyish but this new style of short little fluffy thing seems like something to attract little kids and the small population of weirdos that have a plushy fetish.

It's some new crap and its annoying, it makes decent games hard to take seriously and somewhat embarassing all together, and its becoming more common, what the hell? Why is this happening? Why do people like being these things?

I for one like those "fucking gay fluffies". They are kinda cute. And the gibberlings in Allods? Those are AWESOME! Have you actually played them? They really cooperate all the things they do. Then again, this love for the fluffies is wasted on you two :(

My advice... if you have a problem with those cute fluffies, then stay away from the game. As OP said, he's not an anime gamer, but most games that have them have their origins from anime (Asian) developers...

Gaming is serious business and not something to have fun in.

It is so funny how some people think the world revolves around them.

I'm assuming your being sarcastic, thats NOT what I'm saying. Some people like more SERIOUS themes. I can understand those cartoonish, anime type games having these little fluffy things, thats the style, I get it.

But why on TERA? Graphics on that game actually look decent, and have a serious theme, then I see the porporis thing and I'm like... This DOESN'T fit at all.

To me its the equivalent of an Grey Alien being a selectable class on Diablo 3. It's just out of place, some games have a theme that doesn't have the room for some little teddy bear race. And the teddy bears seem to be taking over, like game developers feel like that have to butcher the seriousness of a game to cater to this new MMO trend, is my point.

I think they call it a Fantasy setting.....No matter how you perceive the game to be, there is nothing is serious in a fantasy setting.

Personally, I'd rather see a developer add a race of furries or fluffies than those damn elves that people seem so keen on. Hell, even Star Trek has them. *mumbles* green-blooded hobgoblins *mumbles*

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Friendly feedback:  good call on the edit :)

I think the recent use of "children-looking" (FF14), "Carebear-looking" (TERA) and other silly races ruin a game for folks looking for immersion.    I gotta hand it to the makers of Rift: Planes of Telera Their small guy looks badass (see below)

I love when people start to talk about things that take away from the Seriousness of a.... wait for it..... wait for it..... A VIDEO GAME. We're talking about fantasy here. Just cause it's not your cup of tea doesn't mean they shouldn't put it in the game. You know what? When I watched the labyrinth the other day... l was thinking to myself.. man I really hate those pink guys who threw their heads around and sang that reggae type shit. But ya know.. to a lot of people, they were their favorite in the movie.

The difference between you and I is that I didn't think they shouldn't have been there just because I did not like them.

WRONG. You CAN have elements of seriousness in a fantasy setting.

Okay, example. In a non-serious disney-themed fantasy setting, the trolls are just big ugly meanies. In a more serious fantasy theme, the troll is a hideous monster that will bite your damn head off. Get it? The type of theme that Age of Conan has is a more mature serious fantasy, same for diablo, and even games that are inbetween the rift like Guild Wars, maintained a level of seriousness and avoided the cute crap and exaggerated cartoonishness.

I'm not saying that ALL mmos have to be like this, of course there has to be some for the younger crowds. But for GOD sakes don't try to make a game thats semi-mature and think its OK to add a race that looks like a bunch of Teddy Ruxpins, and give them swords and guns to shoot dragons and expect me to take that serious, EVEN in a fantasy setting.

No, I'm saying they shouldn't be there because they DON'T FIT THE GAMES THEME.

Labyrinth was a movie that DID have that kind of theme, it was all about topsy turvy crazyiness, it wasn't a SERIOUS movie at all.

What if in the movie 300 all the sudden a bunch of little Gibberlings ran out with spears helping them battle Xerxes? You'd be like WTF!?!?!

  • stayontargetstayontarget Member RarePosts: 6,519

haha are you implying that only mature people play AoC, Diablo ?

Look the bottom line is if you don't like it then don't play it.  But for the love of god quite crying about it.

So..is this like the latest "racism"? Now it even pervades the gaming space? I see it as, if I don't like the look of a race, I just won't play it. Real simple. Griping about it though...seems like a waste of mental energy.

Interesting topic and a pretty fair statement to make, personally I haven't been checking for any of those games so I can't say I knew about this but what I found extremely telling was the line about not being some "anime" style gamer and it is the feeling I got from another recent release that left me at a point of being unable to play the game and that would be FFXIV.

Much like the baddies faced in the last final fantasy mmorpg I just can't get into some of the things they put into these games, things like fighting giant sheep and lady bugs really turns me off of a game and it is curious how many mmorpg players out there don't seem to have the same sense about these games.

I have to admit the entire playable race is not as a big an issue to me because quite simply I can chose to never play that race but we are all stuck having to fight the same mobs for the most part.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

  • EmhsterEmhster Member UncommonPosts: 913

I understand your point. Sometimes some developers are introducing races that doesn't really fit in their art style to try and enlarge their targetted market.

I can live with that, but sometimes I admit I get annoyed when I see those little freaks with their huge bloated head in Aion.

  • vajravvajrav Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 146

I hate those cutesy races as well. It doesn't help that most MMOs that have cute stuff are also brainless tedious grinders.

  • UnlightUnlight Member Posts: 2,540

I groaned when I first saw an Asuran for the same reasons in the OP.  But I've discovered that not all 'little' races are cute and cuddly.  Some can be pretty badass:

Nasty little buggers with a mean disposition.  Not your average pink-haired Gnome.

One of the reasons people love SW so much is because of the amount of races you could choose from.
