Would you play a female character as a guy?

My character is my extension in virtual world so i stick to male characters only.

Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Meh. I usually play whatever has, in what my opinion is, the better art style for the class I want to play. Sometimes female armour just looks better to me. Sometimes male armour just looks better to me.

As for singleplayer RPG's, I like to milk every ounce of content I can get. So usually I go through a few times with different gender/"class" combinations.

That's why I've been naming all my characters with names containing a male name as the first few letters. People always shorten the names to that male name.

When I play a game I don't always play human, is it as weird for me to play as the undead in wow? Playing as a different gender is no different then playing a different race. I pick the race, class and gender based on what I feel will look the best.

And too be honest sometimes female avatars have the better looking armor imo

I would advocate the same behavior for members of both genders interacting with other people in the same circumstances.  But I admit that the circumstances are different, and addressed the statistical majority.  (I'm not going to cite something here; I googled it before posting to make sure there's plenty of information out there, so I'll let you decide for yourself if any of it's credible).  Gender neutral pronouns are handy, but the only rationale for calling my argument sexist when taken as a whole (as opposed to paraphrased out of context) is that I used a female as the victim in one example and a male as the perpetrator in another.  I'll gladly concede that that language doesn't put me on the forefront of feminist thought--and I'm fine with that--but my argument isn't sexist simply because it identifies sex any more than the late Rev. King's arguments were racist because they advocated for black Americans to sit-in instead of whites.

Secondly, I maintain that MMO's aren't the worst place to form relationships because I've formed one through them.  The girlfriend I had before I married my wife was a gamer, and we met online and gamed together long before we met in person.  It was far from the healthiest relationship, but that had nothing to do with the fact that we gamed together before we were a couple together, and I wouldn't give up that time.

Moreover, and more importantly, I do not presume to be able to anticipate what kinds of relationships other people are going to form in games, and I don't feel it's my place to attempt to restrict them.  "Are you a girl in real life?" is not a stupid question in itself.  It's very inappropriate in a lot of contexts, but men and women do not treat each other the same.  I genuinely hope that they treat each other equally, but equal does not mean devoid of differences.  I do not believe that women are entitled to special treatment by virtue of being women, but I also believe that courtesy is different between people of different sexes than between same sexes, and would be the last person to try to convince someone that a chivalrous outlook is always inappropriate.  If that makes me sexist, then I'll wear the button for that one proudly.

If the MMO genre is going to live up to its potential, then it has to succeed as a social medium in addition to succeeding as entertainment.  I don't have numbers to offer up here, but I would venture that at least a statistically (and financially) significant portion of WOW's subscriber base are playing WOW because they have friends that play WOW, as opposed to the fact that killing mobs in WOW is more fun than doing so in its competition.  That doesn't make WOW a dating club for gamers, and certainly, it's your dime: you can play with as much or as little social interaction as you want.

But for those who do choose to interact with the other people who play the game on more than a superficial level, I would be quick to remind anyone that the other people playing the game are actual people, as opposed to just really smart AI.  They do in fact have actual lives and identities beyond those of their avatars, and this is the single distinction between roleplay and non-roleplay (and I would go so far as to say that that line is blurry too).  Your avatar may not be a representation of your actual social self--I tend not to think of mine as that either, far from it--but where you might consider everything outside of your actual, pre-existing real life (I'm assuming that's what you meant, since anything else would be a concession) to be circumstances surrounding your entertainment, plenty of other people, myself included, don't.  Even in the periphery, they are people, and as technology improves, that fact is only going to become more, not less, apparent (see any given guild's vent or TS server for evidence).  If that interferes with your entertainment, I assure you that I for one will gladly talk to someone else whenever I find myself confronted with the silent business-only attitude from other gamers in MMO's, and I can usually tell when someone is actually roleplaying a character instead of playing the game-as-game.  But understand that your perspective, whether majority or minority, is still only one of many, and for at least some of us out here, dating is not out-of-the-question.  Far be it from me to attempt to quash that.

EDIT:  Something else came to mind on topic but outside of this particular discussion, and I didn't want to double post:

If you're a male attempting to roleplay a female, or a female attempting to roleplay a male, you might do some writing and then ask your opposite-gender friends to take a look at it and see if it sounds reasonable.  "Teehee" doesn't sound female in itself: It sounds childish.  On the same token, "Bro" doesn't sound male; it sounds ... well, it sounds like you're a damn moron (unless you're trolling someone, in which case, go nuts).  So if you're actually roleplaying (which in this context really means writing), approach it with enough seriousness to give the writing value, unless you're playing it for comedy.  Otherwise anybody who takes a look at your logs is going to see right through you, and the story you were trying to tell is as dead as if it were never told.  [This also goes under the free friendly advice that you should take with a grain of salt heading.]

I'm really not interested in competing on who can make the bigger wall of text so I'm going to just give you a couple things to think about and leave it at that.

Cause and effect.  If everyone gets to know who is a guy, then by default they know who is a girl. So if you think women should get to hide their identity, you'd better come up with a better solution. Or maybe they should just stop playing mmo's if they get harrassed. Up to you to decide which is fair.

If you think it's a amicable dating medium, then how do you feel about your wife playing mmo's? Not every guy out there is going to be hitting on her. Maybe some will just have charming personalities and make her laugh alot. Maybe she'll have a chance to find someone that she'll really enjoy spending time with.  Or is she no longer allowed to play mmo's because she's married? Try telling her that you don't think she should play mmo's because it's a dating scene and you don't think she should be a part of that, cause it's just like going to a single's bar.

I think the dating should be kept out of it, and the more I think of it, the more I applaude the men actually pretending to be female, because THAT destroys the dating scene in mmo's. Sorry I don't agree with you.

I guess that would depend if you see your self as your character and honestly if you identify that much you should probably seek mental help.

I play mostly female characters, they look better generally speaking. The armor less is less absurdly massive. I know a ton of women that play strictly as men. Shrug. Is what it is, I've not heard anyone call it weird or strange or such who was over 16 since ~2002ish though...

Stopped reading right there.  If you can't treat my contribution to the discussion with enough courtesy at least not to condescend, then the discussion is over.

If you play female characters its because you like being hit on in-game by dudes. Not much else to it.

Didn't mean to be offensive, I just find to long of posts to become weary. It's not just our thread, so I simply meant I wanted to keep it short. Sorry for appearing rude.

And if you use a forum avatar that is of a person blowing his brains out then you want to "off" yourself?

When I first started gaming I always made male toons but the past few games I played I shared a character with my wife or allowed her to make one on my account ( which I later ended up leveling for myself ) and eventually playing the female characters that she created grew on me.. ( Seeing as it didn't bother her that i played them ) I started making other characters female some characters in games have to be female ( Guild wars Paragon ,  mesmer and even elementalist / Aion Sorcs , clerics and chanters < these characters have fruity looking robes / armor for male toons so I would rather them just be female )

In future games such as Guild Wars 2 I plan on making most of my characters female .. especially since i'm planning on playing a Norn Warrior and if the armor is anything like Jora's was I will enjoy playing it that way. My wife on the other hand talked about making a Ranger which i'll end up leveling up also so " Oh well " image

I have before in MMO's...I am now...so sure, I probobly will in the future.

I't s all about making a character, and when it boils down to it, girls aren't that much different then guys.

I have absolutely no identity with any character that I play in a video game. They are just pixels on the screen. With that said I usually pick what looks better proportion wise, and whatever has the better animations.

  • comerbcomerb Member UncommonPosts: 944

I play whatever is aesthetically pleasing.  I have a tendency to play casters as females and warriors/rogues as male.  I also tend to play dark Casters (ie Warlocks) as male, and Archers as female.  I do have a male Goblin mage in Cataclysm, and thats something new for me.

If you actually have a problem playing a video-game character thats a different sex, your probably need to go talk to a therapist about your lack of comfortability w/ your sexuality.

I can kinda understand it being weird if you were a heavy roleplayer or something, but 95% of MMO players aren't.

Pretty much every set of armor in anygame will look better on a female character rather than a male...except maybe orcs in WoW...anyway...the males in most games...especially WAR look ghey.

I don't see the difference between writing a female character in a novel and playing one in a video game.

Actually I disagree somewhat. The armor in AoC looks much better on the male characters than the female characters. And generally any type of monster races, like orcs, the armor looks better on the males.

NEVER...I chuckled when I read where someone called pixels ~ eye candy ~

  • Germaximus_SGermaximus_S Member UncommonPosts: 1,061

Theres no denying plenty of male players create female characters in order to deceive the other players in the game.

A lot of us tho just choose something we'd rather look at when we're gonna be playing for so many hours. Personally as much as i can apprecciate a big buff hero in a game cuz hes all cool and stuff id rather look at a "hot" character while playing.

Dont get me wrong tho, im not a guy that makes only female characters, im just sayin. :p

I'm a guy...and I play female characters once in awhile.  It has nothing to do with looking at a sexy animated butt.  It's just to do something different.

When I play females, I usually pick the ugliest race there is...trolls, ogres, orcs, etc...cuz there are very few of those type of characters.

Seriously....I don't get the whole "I want to look at a sexy butt" thing....it's a freeking computer generated, clothing covered, pixelated rear end.  I just don't see much "hotness" in that.

But hey....we're all different and that's what makes this world great.

    I dont understand.

If you had a choice between watching gay porn and lesbian porn which would you pick?

It does matter what you want to look at.

You pesonally like looking at ugly characters, thats fine, so why wouldnt you understand people that would rather look at a "pretty" character?

Im not staring at my characters butt when i make them, i just dont want an ugly character, and guys are ugly.

I always play female chars in mmorpg's its a videogame, and i'd rather tbh have something nice to look at while playing the game, insted of starting at some stupid looking beefcake male char.

I think people take it too seriously, mmorpg's are games, play what ya want I do, personally I feel the people that have issues with people playing chars that are their opposite gender have some sort of sexual preference issues or some other mental issue.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."
