I might play female characters for bank alts or something but not for any serious character.
I already made my very obvious stance on the matter in this thread, but I usually *do* make a male main character with one of my common namesakes, but shortly after playing as him a while I figure I'd much rather be staring at eye candy. My mains always become alts, and vica versa.

I never play Female characters i am a Man and happy with it no wired intention's of playing and Rolegame where i would be in the role of a woman. The argument i like looking at a female Toon rather than at a male one i think is somewhat disturbing if i wanna see something nice i turn off the game and spend time with my wife and do NOT stare at a game character....
However i always have my own story for my character which i try to progress within the game. I play it like in my Pen and Paper rpg times i create a story around my character and try to grow it, while i do not Roleplay ingame with other players do i certainly roleplay for myself and that would just be wired if i play a female...
I dont Judge anyone playing cross gender toons tho plz dont get me wrong. Everyone his/her own i only tried to point out while it doesn't work for me

Some people say that it's very bizzare to play as another sex in an online game, do you think it's simply fun and for the look, do people take this too seriously, or is it linked to an identity problem?
Oh RLY? "Some people" as in people you know IRL, virtually, have only read, demographic, etc... ?
Honestly I don't think about it until I run across threads like this one, then I may recall it briefly in-game once or twice. But it is definately not something I dwell on in-game, or outside of my game time with the exception of these all to frequent threads.
I would have to say yes. I would also say the people that take it too seriously are the same "Some people" in your opening statement.
Odds are that there are those that play (MMO)RPG's that do have an identity "problem". I wouldn't bet against it.
Personally, I can't remember the last time I caught myself "staring" at my characters "backside" while playing any game, but if I do I certainly don't have any thoughts of "OMG That's !!!"
So when I read the, " I would rather stare at a "backside" while playing" excuse, I have to laugh and question why anyone would actually be looking at their avatar that intensely for it to actually be an issue.
Now THAT I find to be bizarre.
Now, with all that being said, I have played both genders where multiple characters are allowed. I based my decisions off of what most people would consider to be RP'ing.
Example:
U.O. 1997 - My first character was a Male Warrior. I pictured a Warrior as being male (picture Arnold in Conan) and being that I am male IRL, it fit nicely. Now, my second character was going to be my dedicated Tailor and yes, that character was Female. Why? It is what I pictured when I thought of a tailor IRL. So for me, it fit within the context of the game and character role.
Now if someone finds my example to be bizarre, simply fun and games, or an identity problem, I really don't care to try and change their perception on the matter.
Now, I also had a cross-dressing male character in U.O., dressed in all the latest neon fashions.

Wanna hook up and see... I promise, I wont bite...
If it really bothers you so much, why don't you go play Counterstrike... no female characters there! Better yet, unplug from the interwebs quickly... your brain clearly can't handle to content.

Could not have said it better myself. Like I have said before over the years, those of us from a pen and paper rpg background would not even blink an eye at playing a character of the opposite sex. Even the father of rpgs Gary Gygax had characters of the opposite sex.
Hell one of my rpg rulebooks had a small section in them for those new to rpgs stating that this was ok. So I really do not know why this topic even comes up. In a rpg you play what you want, its as simple as that.
Some people say that it's very bizzare to play as another sex in an online game, do you think it's simply fun and for the look, do people take this too seriously, or is it linked to an identity problem?
You have to remember that back in the old days during the formative years of the MMO industry the term MMORPG was Multi-Male-Online-Role-Play-Guys
Even during the first 5 years of World of Warcraft since launch day the number of guys playing female characters was between 60% to 90%.
Also what is shocking is that majority of real life females play male characters to advoid the cybersex and sexual harrassment that went on especially on the Role Play Servers.
Rule of thumb when playing any MMO game is that if you see and meet a female avatar assumed that person is actually a guy until you get verification via voice chat ingame or use third party voice chat like Ventrillo or Teamspeak. Also any female avatar should considered to be either Jailbait or a undercover law enforcement officer looking to pad his/her arrest record.
Its a matter of perspective. Me I usually like to identigy with my avatars and hence as I myself am male I primarily focus on controling male characters. A mate of mine on the other hand who is also male prefers to make female characters beause and I quote " If I have to stare at a behind for hours each day it masy as well be a cute one".
how many times has this topic come up now.. its not only old.. its actually kinda boring already. maybe MMORPG ought to stickie this subject (if not this particular topic) to let the few remaining players in the world who seem to have never come across it.. read it and get over it.
Even if you say people on a virtual game shouldn't be given a gender, the fact is we lived all our life acting differently toward opposite sex than with our own, it's human nature and anyone saying they don't are just lying to themselves.
I act more protectively and respectfully to women while I am more raw or blunt with other guys, same way as you wouldn't hit a woman's back as hard a guy's one to motivate the person to step forward (sorry my english isn't great but you know when a dude is hesitant to go forward and you give that slap on the back, you do it much more gently when it's a woman)
Many are saying that I would be weird for minding this, yet most of those same people's reason for taking a female avatar is to "stare at that avatar's ass instead of at a dude avatar"??? Seriously who is the weird guy here? I take pride in making my male toon look cool in a superb armor and a giant axe, and you do as well with different interests, I doubt the majority of you would wear a man bikini armor set on his male toon, it's normal to care about that stuff.
It disgusts me to find out that a dude has been playing under a female toon. Be man enough to stand for what you are and stop exploiting the pixel representation of a woman to arouse yourself goddamnit.
I bet most of your kind are just going to try and find the sexiest outfits for your female toons and even some of you whore for free stuff.
I have to stare at my Avatar for hours on end and want to enjoy it. For me it does depends on the game and how the characters look. In WOW I had a female BE Paladin because the male looks so gay. Then I have a Male Orc Hunter because the females look nasty. So I guess it depends on the game, toon looks etc. Most Asian grind games I have the women because again the males usually look gay.

Well I respect your point of view but I feel that it's a bit narrow. At least in the idea that you don't take into account that players might not look at their characters as extensions of themselves and might look at them as just "characters".
My guess is that you are probably a very tradtional person and you fall very easily into traditional gender roles. Nothing wrong with that but I also guess that you might find it difficult to imagine women cops or male interior designers or women soldiers or male nurses?
Just a guess I could be extremely wrong on that mark.
I also think that you are attributing being male and being female as being strong and robust over weak and fragile. There are plenty of men out there who are only 5 feet tall and not solid as a wrestler. There are women out there who are very solid and very strong and will climb a mountain or go spelunking alongside any man.
In any case, to your point, I would ask you to imagine that there are people out there who play these games in a way that you might find a bit alien and that they indeed are not looking for those characters to be extensions of their real selves.

Where are you actually welcoming me to? To the first century in human history where we have doomed our very existence? In this society where people won't accept peoples differences may it be race, age or gender each having their own overall strength and weakness yet where the meaning of egality is so narrow? Where many woman protitutes themselve, where the essence of slavery is legalize, political corruption reigns and parents have close to no rights over their ways of raising their childrens?
If your 21st century means so much for you that is it the only word you had to share, then I wonder why you are here so much.
I've had enough of the ways of the outside world and it is why I resigned to virtual ones.
This thread again? Along with numerous comments of "I want to stare at a chick's ass instead of a guy's all day," it's getting old.
People have their reasons, though the question now is, why do you spend all your time in a MMOG staring at your character's ass instead of the virtual world your avatar is a part of?
I thought it boiled down to one of two things; (though I do like the quote)
Are you making a toon to represent yourself for others, or are you just making a toon?
I really don't care what people choose to make their toons be, and I don't make a toon for the benefit of the rest of the people on the internet. I mean seriously, what importance is anyone else to me? The thought "OMG, someone on the internet isn't certain of my masculinity" falls into the same category as " OMG, someone on the internet thinks I'm wrong!" or "OMG, someone on the internet doesn't like me!"
I'm not playing a MMO for anyone else's benefit, so if you think any different, it just sucks to be you.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
When I start playing new games, whether its MMOs or Singleplayer games, I always tend to check out which races that are available, which classes I can pick and how the characters I make would look if made as a Male or as a Female. Then I'll pick the kind of class I want to play first. Suppose I decide to play a Rogue then. I look over the races avaliable and determine that Elves are the most suitable race for playing a Rogue. Given my earlier experiences when I looked over the races and classes I had already noted that Male Elves have more feminine features than masculine ones - they in fact look pretty like pre-puberty teenagers with long feminine hair.
Now I want to look 'Awesome', which to me as a man, means: I'll want massive buldging muscles, scars, tattoos, random piercings, a wild grown mane of hair and some messy facial hair. Clearly the elven males avaliable to me don't match that mould, so they end up being dissatisfactory. My choices then becomes:
1: Suck it up and play the ugly male Elf.
2: Drop the Elf and play an inferior race as my Rogue
3: Drop the Rogue and play a different class altogether
4: Make a female Elven rogue instead.
I often go with the fourth option simply because female Elves match my opinions of what an 'Awesome' woman should look like. That is: slim waisted, large chested, long legged, with a beautiful face and long flowing hair. Ultimately the gender that I play doesn't matter as long as I get to actually look cool. If men can't fulfill that role because of graphical style or visual racial differences - I simply play a woman.
So I pick Class, then Race and then whatever gender that happens to have the highest 'Awesome' factor given these circumstances. That said, I do find myself dissapointed when 'I get stuck playing as a female character', because I definitely prefer tromping about the gameworld as a massive scarred brute- plus, my girlfriend gets jealous when my female characters end up looking better than hers. :P
Hehe...this one again? I always play a male character except in games like Vindictus where the classes are gender specific ( which I hate for alls information )
I generally try and make my character look as close to my real self as possible...when I play a human anyway.
Just for the record, I don't play games to watch a little one inch cartoon butt run around the monitor; as far as I'm concerned that's a sick reason for a male to play a female character and I honestly believe there may be some ulterior motives with those there that be...though Trueforral1 there gave a perfectly understandable and acceptable reason.
Getting old is mandatory...growing up is optional.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
