I'll be looking to see if "iconic battle suit" equals are very smedley way of shoe-horning more RMT into a game that's likely to be subscription based.
There are rare exceptions in the world of comics but the idea that new heroes go around in costumes with styling from established heroes is absurd. CoH had a gear free system, it worked well and stayed true to comic book ethos. But in DC Heroes we are going to get equipment rewards, it is like there was an issue of Superman where he fought a baddie and found a pair of +1 red boots to wear. This decision would not be so bad if CoH had not already shown us that superhero MMO’s don’t have to take WoW gameplay and put it in spangled costumed tights to make a good supers MMO.
If you take a look at previous post you do see that some ppl are interested in looking similar to those "iconic heros" So obviously it isn't that much of a bad idea.
I Agree as long as there are many options late game to fulfill the needs of most ppl it won't be a bad idea at all. I think you even have the option of customizing your armor? So you dont just look like anyone else who wan'ts to look like super man too.
lol, the first half of the article didn't sound like an opinion piece, but more like something Cao's marketing minions gave you to post :P
So let me see if I understand this right. You go along making your hero kind of the way you want to, then you are supposed to work (raid or somesuch?) so that you can look like the motards running around in Dark Knight with hockey pads? How long does it take for Batman to show up, string you up like a stuck pig, and share a quick laugh with Scarecrow? How long after you dress up like superman does it take for the Wondertwins to show up and wet themselves laughing at the poseur?
If you get the invisible man outfit, be very careful, especially if Wonderwoman asks you out....
This makes it feel like the whole build up of character progression is to become a uniformed footsoldier in the army of one of the real heroes.
I understand there are some cases of emulation in comics and it might make sense for certain storylines, but this is the end game for everyone. As if every character that finally proves himself worthy of being a hero and gets handed an official batman fanclub junior hero costume to wear.
It just feels like a contrived mechanic to enforce a way for a super hero game to acquire gear.
Some time around 2005 it seems like SOE did some market research that led them to the conclusion that everyone wants to be "iconic." They've been beating that term to death ever since, and don't seem to have many positive results to show from it. I think it was Cao and the gang that became so obsessed with this. No surprise that it's a dominant theme in DCUO.
SOE gets on weird kicks all the time, does not matter that they are almost always out of touch with the players themselves.
The sad thing is they justify these ridiculous notions without a thought that they might have been wrong in their original conclusions.
The sadder thing is, I keep hoping they will eventually get something right. Can't tell yet with this game, although my initial perceptions are not that favorable at this point.
Items should not make a super an individual in the first place, it should be their powers. CoX used enhancements to powers to embed some variation in the classes. Thats sort of system makes perfect sense in a supers world, finding an old +1 tiara that Wonder Woman used to wear does not.
There are rare exceptions in the world of comics but the idea that new heroes go around in costumes with styling from established heroes is absurd. CoH had a gear free system, it worked well and stayed true to comic book ethos. The problem is that CoX population is not booming or growing. They get a few here and there, but lose a few here and there. To repeat the system that CoX has would not be intelligent because if you enjoy that system you would just play CoX. DCUO on the otherhand is trying to appeal to the fantasy mmo'er who is use to gear progressions and such and get those players as well as avid DC fans.
The way they have it set works out fine considering this is a quest heavy grind to max level, and the battles get harder as the game progresses. And at the same time the gear helps you focus even more, such as should i get more health or more attack power, ie am I going more dps or more tankish.
Also, for people complaining about their being a limited amount of sets at end game, please keep in mind that you can wear any constume piece you find from level 1 up to max level at any time after you found it. You can go into your costume menu and change your outfit on the fly, and mix and match as you see fit. Not too mention the in depth color system. So technically speaking, your end game costume has the potential to look completely unique. Sure you can just wear all iconic gear, but maybe you like some boots over these or prefere a helmet over a mask, etc. There will be lots of customization here.
Well if everyone wears that suit for endgame, no matter the look, everyone's stats will be the same. Where is the individuality?
Seriously? After all the games that have come out with end game raids and provides everyone with the exact same looking outfit, nevermind exactly the same stats, you are going to rag on SOE because they provide the same stats? There will be tons of end game items to wear, and you can show yourself in the iconic suit, but equip items that better suit the stats you are aiming for, or vice versa you can use the iconic suit stats if they suit you well, but wear the same costume you came into the game at lvl 1 with.
Individuality is second to a players ability to be the best in the game. People will always choose the better item over the more individual looking item during combat situations. Maybe parading around town you might wear something cosmetic, but when it comes down to fighting you always wear the best, regardless of look. At least in DCUO, you can modify the look and still wear the best.
I'm going to throw this in here because I don't think I'm breaking the NDA by saying this:
Gear stats make up about 1/3ish of your character's "ability". The other 2/3 comes from chosen weapons skills and chosen power skills. From what I can tell, endgame players are going to be quite diverse. They may choose to look alike, but they will each be very different.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
after playin the beta for a solid 3 hour all i can say is wow. Great game they just need to finish the voice overs and touch up some glitches but seriously the games really good.
Yeah, I agree.. It really is awesome.
really? i found the 6 power sets pretty lack luster, and even some of the individual powers pretty meh, (a crow as a guardain???, no difference between the flames and electrocution illuisons). the pretty limiting character creator. There is really nothing drawing me in, this from a guy with about 12 toons all made up to about lvl 12. beautifully scaled city though
It does seem bizarre that people here are assuming everyone has to look the same or else if they do choose to look the same they then HAVE to behave the same.....these things are a choice and as players the more choices we have the better.
Ultimately however its how the game makes you feel that matters, if you want to wear an outfit like another thats fine as long as it doesnt make you feel like a lackey....unless you want to be a lackey, which is perfectly legit and in terms of villainy actually quite normal to begin with.
I suspect there will be enough of us who dont want to use the iconic suits at all save for buffs, and maybe even some of us that look differently still want to enjoy some time as a lackey, the gameplay needs to be felxible enough to support the player in the type of role they want to fulfill rather than assuming exactly the same parameters for everyone. Its Champions Online in reverse, that game allows you any number of looks but they all amount to playing as the exact same person from beginning to end.
Looking the same, playing the same, feeling the same are all different problems and the game engine needs to cater for as many tastes as possible while supporting the integrity of the ip, this feature seems to support the idea they are actually giving that some thought.
Typically in comics we don’t often have heroes wishing they could live up to their predecessors or trying to dress like them
Super boy, Super Girl, Robin, Nightwing, pretty much all the lanterns, Wonder Woman has an island of women wishing they could be more like her and they do dress like her, etc. etc. lol. The reality is that it's common lol. But it's Bill lol, so mistakes like this are expected lol.
Actually, it's NOT that common. For every example you can cite, I can name 50 or more characters that do not follow that path.
The Green Lanterns don't count. They do not forge their career to model or mimic another Green Lantern, they are part of an organization that are already issued a uniform (or uniform style, they aren't trying to dress up like a particular lantern) and similar powers... they can, however, look up to a member of their organization. That's like saying all policeman aspire to be and seek the approval of one particular policeman and that they dress in a police uniform because he does... as opposed to having one as part of their job. "I'm going to wear a badge on my police uniform... because famous cop does!" That's just silly.
And talk about a complete ignorance of Wonder Woman. I won't even comment.
So... uh. "lol" and "lol" and what are you laughing at? "lol" You couldn't be more wrong "lol" while trashing on someone else "lol" and giving them crap "lol" about usually being wrong "lol." You also spelled Superboy and Supergirl wrong. "lol" But it's the internet...

I know right because thats basically every sidekick that ever existed in DC
Seems to me they are going about this wrong, typical SOE, clueless forever. If I am going to play a hero, I don't want to look like everyone else!
Seriously, what is the point of looking like Superman if 100's of others do the same?

You seem to not be aware of the fact that you can wear that suit and actually not have it show, still revealing your unique costume.
Also, you are able to wear an item and keep the stats from it and still have the look from another item you've worn in the past.
Personally, that sound pretty innovative for the typical SOE you're referring to.
Well if everyone wears that suit for endgame, no matter the look, everyone's stats will be the same. Where is the individuality?
I think choosing stats as a measurement of individuality isn't a very good way of approaching that.
Sounds more like you have a chip on your shoulder.
