im still waiting for a kickass unarmed monk class. kind of makes the whole gear-grinding a non-starter, but maybe there are people out there who would enjoy playing a true ascetic character.
The DDO monk is pretty kick ass but a class without gear would not work in most MMOs, they are just too gear centered.
Imagine adding the class in Wow (or EQ"). Leveling goes fine enough but as soon as you hit max level (or full AA in EQ2) you have nothing to do. Endgames are all about getting the best gear through raids and PvP.
So the class is interesting in itself and if someone made a game without gear dependence (a game was in development like that called Warhammer online but development got cut since the company making it got broke and license were sold to Mythic).
I would love a MMO based on Runequest, were character development is the big thing and gear matters little, it would work fine there.
Folks have been asking for the Pandarens in WoW for a long time...
I always wanted a dynamic class that changed with your surroundings. Wouldn't have many abilities, maybe like 10, but your abilities would change depending on your geographical area. The abilities would be roughly the same, to keep you from making too many errors.
I got the idea from the "Geomancer" in Final Fantasy Tactics.
Basically if you had a skill like a heal, depending on where you were, it did different things.
For instance...
Underground/Mountains: Heal - Straight sold amount (For examples purpose, say it healed for a straight 100hps)
Swamp: Heal with a heal over time attached (50hps and another 60 over 10 seconds)
Plains/Grassland: Short duration heal over time. (110 hps over 6 seconds)
Forest: Long duration heal over time (200hps over 20 seconds)
I think you get the idea.
Each ability would be themed. From what the example above, the same could be done for dots, attacks, nukes, whatever. I imagined it to be a hybrid dps/healer class, with a few buffs.
If I made my own mmo, I would not have skill trees, I would just have like 30-40 different classes. Give the alt-o-holic community something to do.
I remember there was one final fantasy character who uses spells in a way where it is casted on the weapon and affected attacks with it.
Also, similar to an autocast sage in Ragnarok online, where attacking makes you cast spells automatically.

I play Allods Online and they came up with a unique class....Psionicist
It's like a mage but it uses it's mind and psychic powers to kill its enemies.
Here's pictures if you want to see it

Whoa, I didn't know Vanguard has Psionicists just like Allods did. Still a cool and "unique" class though.
