What if Blizzards next MMO was a sandbox?

I dont know if its been asked, But here it is!

What if they did make a sandbox mmo? Would it be any good? Would their be any themepark elements in it as well? If it was a huge hit would that cause other developers to persue a sandbox style game? Would they rip off some of minecrafts uberness even though they're probably well into its development cycle? Would it quiet Blizzard naysayers at all?

Discuss.

I personally would be over joyed if they did. And id probably offer organs on the black market if i thought it could get me into the beta. What kind of design do you think they would use?

    First off, it won't be.

Assuming it could happen, which (and again, I can't stress this enough) it won't be, it would be another genre defining title.

I'm guessing it would be a hybrid theme park and sandbox. Just enough the other side of a themepark to be called a sandbox.

Blizzard has always led the way so yes, if they made a sandbox (restating the previous qualification, it won't happen), then yes every other Goddamned developer would copy their formula - poorly.

Blizzard devs are gamers just like us. I can only assume they would copy whatever the hell they wanted. I can tell you first hand, the software business works that way.

MMORPG.com's community is FULL of hatred and anger towards ANY new MMO. Let alone any that Blizzard ushers forth. Look at my join date, I know this community. They're vicious, vitriol spewing fanatics who's lust for failure is only paralleled by their hatred for all things Blizzard.

Hell fucking no it won't quiet the mob, it will only act as warm meat thrown into a pack of wild cheetahs.

So would I. Blizzard has the resources and experience to do it right. WoW isn't my kind of game, but I have to admit it's a great game for what it is. And the reason isn't innovation, but rather quality and polished implementation. I'd love to see Blizzard focusing on sandbox, but I doubt it will happen.

This site would turn into sandbox bashing instead of thempark bashing overnight.

we can hope next year blizzcon will finally reveal it.. its been a while now, and i was surprised this years blizzcon was lacking ;/

anyway , they never said it wont be sandbox so why you keep saying it wont is beyond me, there is no info to deny it being sandbox ( and im not exactly sandbox gamer to even want one )

and they will probably target different audience , considering cata is relaunching wow, so its not like they giving up on wow theme park, and creating new one to replace, probably not yet in another 5 years probably,

I think it will be a hybrid model.  Offering themepark and sandbox elements.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Logic dictates it won't be. Sandbox is for a niche market. Blizzard doesn't deal in the niche market.

That was exactly what I was thinking.

However... an argument can be made the other way as well...

MMORPGs were a niche market before Nov. 2004.

Thought all of the rumors that had been going around pointed to a MMOFPS game lobby deal...?  You can find articles on Massively from earlier in the year discussing rumors of Blizzard's next MMO that read a lot like an intro to APB.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

And better logic says that if I was Blizzard, I would release a niche sandbox mmo to target the remaining players looking for a quality home and offer both my mmos for a 19.95 monthly sub, thus not hurting my original base and adding to it.

I have the 2'nd oldest join date so far and that means I am the 2'nd most retaaarted in this thread.

If it did what WoW did, made a clone of UO model instead of the EQ model and made it bugless, then all the people complaining about WoW would love this game and all the WoW fans would then hate this game and complain about how it destroyed MMORPGs for them.

What if Blizzard's new mmo is for the console so that it does not directly compete with WOW.

Latest news: (although a few days old)

"The size of the team working on the game is now close to the size of the team working on World of Warcraft (more than 140 employees), a sign that project development is in full swing.

“We have built a development team for that product from our top talent here and augmented it with some of the best and brightest from around the industry,” Sams says. “The product is something we think is going to re-design the way these types of games are looked at.”

    http://blogs.forbes.com/oliverchiang/2010/10/08/blizzard-on-world-of-warcrafts-12-million-subscribers-and-its-upcoming-mmo-successor/

My personal guess to the blue: from very casual to hardcore.

It means a total of 300 programmers/developpers are on both Blizzard MMO's now.

If it was done right, blizzard would monopolize the market.

    sandbox fails

  • musicmannmusicmann Member UncommonPosts: 1,095

I think the funniest thing about this so called new mmo is that people think they will hit that grand slam like they did with WOW.

WOW came out at the perfect time with the perfect quality and polish that the genre didn't have at THAT time.

Any new mmo that Blizzard comes out with would probably be more of a hybrid game that will take the most popular elements that they do very well and add some of the more sandbox elements that will be just enough to make it different than WOW.

I can't imagine them not trying to continue and horde the same players that play their current games. To much to one side will be the same old same old and to much to the other side would be to niche.

define sandbox.  if you don't, it's nothing but a speculative buzz word.

Blizzard is a smart company they would evermake a game like that.  And if they did it would be a financial failure, because it doesn't matter how good the devs are or how much polish you put on the game, sandbox is a fundamentaly flawed game design that will not do very well.

All men think they're fascinating. In my case, it's justified

WoW is such a huge success (and still going strong) that there is little incentive to introduce a new game at this point.  We shall see what happens when GW2 comes out (and I think Bliz is waiting to see too).  At that time we might hear something, but I doubt we will before that.  In an case it will not be a sandbox game....Bliz will stick with tried and true with updates (and if GW2 can pull off fluid dynamic questing then it will change the whole ballgame).

  • tikitiki Member Posts: 395

Blizzard will never make a MMO that has any significant learning curve, their philosophy is to make mindless games for the mindless gamer, and it has been proven that the masses are mindless gamers or else WoW would not have been so popular.

If blizzard actually made a sandbox I would be extremely impressed, I think everyone would be.  I am sure it would be the best sandbox game made, but sadly there is not a chance that they would ever make a sandbox.

Blizzard has already announced that they are in the process of developing a new MMO, but will not release any info about it until 2012.
