can you swap out the "souls" at anytime? will you lose progress? Can you swap out the base class? if i start off with a warrior template, can i turn cleric one day? can i at anypoint make a 100% change? Or better yet, any link to how this class tree / leveling works would be awesome.
otherwise, this game has sparked my interset.

nb: This is gathered for interviews, vidoes and posts. All refers to the current Alpha build and may change.
Exp is earned by the character overall.
Once you learn a skill that has levels, and you buy it up the levels, it will always be that level when one of your Roles has that skill active.
Currently you can save 4 'Roles', each Role is a set of up to 3 Souls, their previous points spent therein, and the Hotbars attached to that Role.
You can only change your Role out of combat.
Once your choose your calling, Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, Mage, then you can have up to 3 souls assigned WITH IN THAT CALLING. So you choose Rogue, you can any of the 8 Rogue souls equipped, but only rogue souls.
Yes, your initial souls can be swapped out, but only for one of the same calling.
For basic Talent/Skill info, only 15 of the 32 souls are currently listed, but those are all that complete trees have been seen and logged.

Good stuff, i was curious about this also.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
There are not only eight souls per calling that you may choos three from. Trion already stated in interviews, that they will add more souls later on.
Additionally there are crafter and pvp souls. Gets quite complicated the deeper you dig into it

I like the idea that you can swap these souls...
...I do NOT like being able to do so anytime you want out of combat (as stated above). I hope that's just something for testing... I think heading to your city/trainer would be fine.

I can't see the problem with this, I'd seriously be pissed off if I was in a dungeon on say for example my dps build shaman/justicar/xxx, and the healer went afk or logged out. Then in order to replace the healer i had to travel back to a city to respec.
Can you please explain your reasoning for not wanting this kind of utility?
Sure... you are entirely respecing your character on the fly. It makes every character a jack of all trades at all times.
I have ZERO problem with letting people swap souls and soul combination to try stuff out.. but doing so with the only limit being "out of combat" seems silly. I threw the "trainer" idea out there as just an idea. As it seems that pulling a soul into you.. or parting one from you.. should involve some sort of ceremony. Perhaps a (5?) hour timer on changes would suffice.
Again thouigh.. it's all hypothetical at this point we really have no idea how soul exchanges will be implemented as the game is still in Alpha and I'm pretty sure the system will go through multiple iterations before release.

This...It might be comfortable, but then so is the ability to teleport over small areas in GW2, it kills the immersion for me.
Actually you cannot swap souls juat at will. You can change your skillsets. That means you have three souls, and you may distribute your 51 skill points across these three souls. You may save up to (atm) four of these skillsets. Out of combat you can switch between the skillsets.
To swap out and in souls you still need to go town.

OK.. but you are saying (if I read you correctly) that you can have 4 pre-made specs that you can swap to at any time as long as you aren't in combat. Are you saying that all 4 of these "skillsets" have to be of the same souls? Just moving the points around? So I can't have one spec with 3 defensive healing priest souls and another with 3 offensive priest souls? Has this been posted publicly anywhere? I'd like to read the actual info on it...
Again.. I really love the mix/match concept.. I just hope it doesn't go to far overboard and allow such dramatic respecs on the fly without limit.
Anyhow.. it's still alpha so I am sure part of testing will involve tweaking these mechanics.

Yes, you understand it correctly. Yes, four specs for exactly three souls. Yes, just moving points around. Yes, I think it has been posted, but on the one hand I am 100% sure, on the other hand I am not your search bot ;-)

Lifted from the main website:-
How the class system works
You choose a calling (Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, Mage). Your calling determines what armor and what souls your character will use.
You start with one soul, think of a soul as a skill tree. At max level you have 51 points that you can spend in your soul tree. Over time you can attune (equip) up to three souls. You can spend your 51 points across those 3 souls, 2 souls, or just max out one soul. You get your second soul "slot" at 15 and your third soul "slot" at 30. You can swap out ANY of your souls for other souls within your calling. You can save various soul sets as roles and switch between the saved roles. Some souls within your calling may allow you to mix some of the common mmorpg archetypes (ie. tanks with a bit healing, rogues with bit of tanking, etc). See the official class/soul page for greater detail. [Pending]
Total starting classes is currently unknown. [src] [Pending]
There are 4 callings and 8 souls per calling. That is 32 souls. (GamingWeez is correct) [25] [42]
There will be around 270 combinations of souls at launch. [41]
You will be able to save up to 4 soul combinations as roles. You can then switch between these roles while not in combat. [31] [37]
If you have spent points on a soul tree you will need to visit a trainer to change out the soul, there is a small monetary fee. [31]
There are souls that are not combat related and may be used for special events. [4]
An example image showing how spending points works. Source image is from IGN. [4]
Some souls can be acquired through crafting or raiding. [35]
"All callings with the exception of clerics had an extra mechanic like action points for warriors, combo points for rogues, and charge for mages." [43]
Versatility is the key here, bear in mind a player may not have access to all souls within a calling unless that player has earned them. Who knows they might implement a cooldown on role switching at launch.
Whatever! Do not expect an iteration of your rose tinted Eq days. That kind of hardcore bullshit is long gone, as with corpse+gear recovery.
Modern mmo's just won't risk losing a casual playerbase just to appease the minority of old skool masochists!
As stated in a recent interview, there will be a mix of group and solo content. Not being able to switch out on the fly would compromise both styles of game play.
I think you are stretching things quite a bit by calling someone who doesn't think you should be able to instantly respec without restriction an "old school masochist". No other game that I have played offers any system even remotely like that... so I fail to see how limiting it somehow would drive away the casual playerbase.. drive them to where exactly?
As I said.. it's Alpha.. plenty of time to tweak the mechanics. I don;t want to see the ability to switch go away. I think it is a great feature. I think the ability to be anything.. at anytime.. is likely just a feature for the Alpha to assist testing. We will see.. that's what testing is for.
PS: For the record... I'm not an "old skool masochist"... nor do I have "rose tinted EQ days"... Nor have I "advocated corpse+gear recovery" so perhaps you are meaning to reply to other people or perhaps you are continuing an argument you had over these topics with someone else. That person was not me. My interest is simply in a mechanic related to instant respecing without restriction..

Ok maybe I was a bit harsh there, if there will be any restriction for respeccing, I doubt they'll make people return to a main city to do it, it really defeats the object. Just making it out of combat should suffice, this is not in any way overpowered I still don't see why there should be any other restriction than that.
And you still haven't given a good reason why you think there should be a restriction!
Well I did give a reason.. whether it's "good" or not is entirely personal opinion.
It will mean that all characters become Jack-of-all-trades at all times. If everyone is everything... then no one is special. I love being able to respec without a hassle to try and experiment with different soul combinations but I want to actually play some sort of character in my RPG.. not a swissarmy/ginsu knife. Being able to be a healer on one pull, a DPS on the next.. and tank the third mob... to me.. just makes having classes meaningless
It's just personal preference I suppose. Some folks just want to play a game and there is nothing wrong with that.. some folks want to have the R in an MMORPG actually mean something and theres nothing wrong with that either.

You're still stuck with your calling. But I see your point. Personally, I think the game will focus more on building up a strategy before heading to a fight (through choosing your soul combination). Will this fight have a lot of adds? Does it require AoEs? Should I use a pet?
I think it goes better if you just see it as 4 classes which can preselect up to 4 sets of abilities.
This is a very nice thread, btw. Thanks y'all for your contribution.
Not a far cry from playing D&D really, with the stipulation of only multi-classing within one archetype.
@Slapshot, you still roleplay your character except in this case it will be Slapshot the swiss army knife rather than slapshot the rogue or slapshot the wizard :P
Edit: I guess everyone is McGuyver in this game
