The sylvari were hardly elves, being significantly shorter than humans but not as short as the asura, and being 100% botanical.
And after their re-design is finished, I highly doubt anyone will compare them to elves.
You might want to work on an option 3 since there will be no elves and so far no confirmed Barbarian class (I also doubt there will be one either).

I hope in the redesign they get rid of the pointy ears so we get rid of this comparison.
I think the Sylvary have pointy ears in the book right? (I don't have my book here with me to check it out) but if they have, than they shouldn't get rid of it. And it's appearence beeing simillar to elfs is not only because of the ears, but because of the race shape and colors in the previous design. I hope the devs get the "new" sylvari a fresh look, one more simillar to plants/trees/etc then to elfs, whether they have or don't have pointy ears.

Well thats dire news. Elfs is maybe the most addictive race in all RPG'S. If Sylvari isnt an elf like race surely i wont play it. But why make a race treelike creature. It sounds completely ridiculous and chieldish. Reminds me the ridiculous chooises bliz made in wow for choosing that ridiculous mix of goat n rat like race Draynei.
As for the asura it looks completely ridiculous also. I mean only kids will probably play it. Personally i like to play serious games. When i see something that makes the game look bozo it certainly is something that is making the game itself looks less serious.
EDIT: Why do we always have to kills dragons? Me likes dragons.
*goes and trys to hug a dragon as well* ^^
Not always, the Dragonlance IP and McCaffreys Penn are dragonhuggers, I wont find it impossible that one of those 2 will turn into a MMO (both have been single player games, in fact "Champions of Krynn" were a great classic a long time ago).
But dragons in myths are usually pretty nasty, at least in western myths and most MMOs are based on western myths. In fact there was a Dragon in GW:Factions that is nice (but is corrupted and saved by the player) so Canthan dragons might be a nicer than the Tyrian ones, it makes sense.
So maybe we will see friendlier dragons in the expansions.
All this coming from someone with a dragon tattoo.

who are you to question the GW lore? if anything Sylvari are much more unique then your run of the mill elfs...The comparison alone is trash

I completely agree with needalife214.
They are completely different stories with completely different races, except humans of course. Not every fantasy story follows the Tolkien concept of races you know? If you want an elf, i'm sorry but GW2 has its own races, and i praise them to have something different. We already have too many elfs in mmorpgs don't you think?
From the Guild Wars: Ghosts Of Ascalon, 1st chapter free preview:
"Shorter than a human but not as diminutive as the asura, her skin was a verdant green, her hair more similar to the leaves of a succulent plant than that of a human woman. When she moved, golden pollen drifted off her.The humanoid appearance, Dougal knew, was a lie. Killeen and the others of her race were born fully formed from the fruit of a great white-barked tree far to the south. There was no animal warmth to her flesh. The sylvari were a recent addition to the world, their entire race only a little older than Dougal himself, but they had already spread far and wide, like an invading weed. Killeen had all the traits attributed to her race: she was honest, direct, and focused. In many ways she was better than most humans he knew."
Physical traits of the Sylvari from the book. There is no mention to pointy ears. They appear to be like humans but with the colours of plants and trees - in this case, green - and with some plant/tree characteristics placed in form of human traits - in this case, this silvary "hair" is more simillar to leaves, and later the story refers that she has braids.... braids made of plant leaves. And there's the pollen drifting from her. When she blushes, her face gets more yellow, not red. And in no way they can appear to be like an animal because they don't have blood, they have to appear more cold and innocent like a plant or a tree.
I am going to create a human character of some sort, mesmer if it makes a return (Lyssa willing) or another scholar class. I am interested in the Sylvari as well for an adventurer class.
Well, im confused. I like the charr alot, but i think i will be going for human because im i like to wear awesome stuff ( endgame armor etc ) and for some reason i think Human armor is more "hmm, whats the word" understandable? better looking? Because the charr are furry and stuff they prob wont cover themselves fully...
Anyway i dont know if u got my point :P ( and im not sure about it, cause i havnt seen any endgame armors basically )
I shall play a charr-hating human, and will love every minute of it.
"I will see you in war, human! And show you how your belief for your so called "gods" is nothing but an illusion, how the strength of believing in yourself and in your race without the restrictions given by religions is your only way to save yourself."
*plugs out of character*.... I will love every minute of playing a human-hating charr in PVP, eheh . In PVE, I will be a bit more friendly, just like "Ember Doomforge".
The only race that resisted an charr offensive without walls or such were the Norn....and they dont even have an army, what proves that 1 Norn = 10 Charrs
Norn have no need of armies, we are Norn!

And we are all supposed to be in this together against the dragons. This doesn't bode well.

This is sign of a good lore atleast, some of the old folk that played in GW1 and are going to play as humans in GW2 will probably hold a grudge against the charr (mostly for the events of ascalon), and the ones that will play charr will do the opposite, defending the charrs...
These kind of RP is nice xP

This is true. I am merely playing my part in this epic story that shall be told (hopefully before 2012!). My character will hate the charr at first. Whether or not he will warm up to them is really up to the players I meet in game and what influences they have on me.
If I happen to join a party that has a charr in it and he/she saves my life, then I could start to lean to at least joining the charr in battle.

Never will I trust them though.
They are gonna have she charr?? How the HELL are we gonna be able to tell them apart?? I'm scared now.
For me, I go where the snow falls, in every game. Norn, the only option.

As I said, in PVE i'm gonna be a bit more friendly. If you read Ghosts Of Ascalon, you will learn about the Charr Ember Doomforge and you will understand me. But in PVP, oh for the sake of the lore, i'm gonna kill as much humans as I can
BTW, this charr character i talked about, is a she charr lol if you read the book, you will learn a lot about all the races and what changed in them since GW1. For those that haven't played GW1, it's a good book to learn what happened in the game story too.
only races i would play in this game is human and norn and from those two i will definetely choose norn ... i like the barbaric look.. i just hope they wouldnt look too much of a warhammer meatsquare with no neck ... its like looking at tank jr. in quake3
Comments
I'll start off as a human ranger. The human lore is definitely the stuff i'll be most interested in.
I'll definitely be playing all races though,
Elven Ranger. 2nd choise Norn Barbarian
FYI
You might want to work on an option 3 since there will be no elves and so far no confirmed Barbarian class (I also doubt there will be one either).

Sylvari, since I always sympathized with plants.
*runs and hugs a few trees* ^^
