MMORPG.com's Bill Murphy presents his lucky thirteenth edition of the DCUO Weekly. This time Bill takes a look at the Green Lantern Brouhaha, or the announcement that the Green Lantern's power set won't be available at launch. Bill discusses the reasons that the dev team made this decision and what it potentially means. Check it out and then weigh in with your own thoughts on the forum.
As it slowly came out of SOE Austin that the Green Lanterns’ power set will not be making the game at launch for players to build their own characters around, folks began raising their eyebrows. Understandably, it’s not like SOE made some blanket announcement saying, “Guess what, we’re not going to have the Corps’ power set in the game, aren’t you excited!?” Some fans are justifiably wary of this development. The Green Lantern, and all of the mythos tied to Hal Jordan and friends, is such a very big part of the DC Universe that it seems a little suspect to not have players capable of joining the Corps themselves. But as Chris Cao explained recently at our NYCC panel featuring DCUO, there’s a real solid reason behind the team’s hesitance to put the Light power set in the game at launch. So for this week I’ll take a look at that reasoning and offer my own thoughts on what it means.

Makes pretty good sense to me. The Corps (in any color) is something you're chosen for. I don't think that people should have it available right away and it makes sense that with an expansion or major patch that the powers would become available because that in and of itself is going to be a powerful storyline kind of outweighning the major plotline in the game.
It's going to be a difficult powerset to get 'right'....in fact its one of those that will never be perfect. The important thing with DCUO and powers is to make the powers change the gameplay experience, to avoid the conciet that just looking different is enough to qualify as a new powerset, gameplay, world response and interaction all need to change for every power but none moreso than those from the Lantern.
I hope the extra time is behind the idea that it will be a fully fleshed out powerset - if it is then it will be like a whole new way to play the game...if it isn't, if it ends up a 'Champions Online' style superficial reskin then no way will it be worth any money and no way would its ommission at launch be acceptable.......its going to be a wait and see affair, but I cannot deny its dissapointing so important a feature is not going to make the launch.
yaa but this is a video game,so the Being Chosen part kinda gets thrown out the door. Honestly im pretty irritated my self ,GL's my fav DC character. But its not to say im not going to buy DCUO,I was just looking forward to playing a GL/GL like character.
GL is also my favorite comic. I'm not falling for the pitch about his story being too broad to throw in the game right now. There will be plenty of lesser known hero/villians in the game. You can't expect everyone to know all the stories. I'm betting more people are familiar with GL's storyline than WonderWoman. Sure WW is iconic and just about everyone knows who she is (thanks to Linda Carter), but do they know what has been happening to her in the DC Universe. I sure don't.
In a catastrophic event other laterns can be deputized, so that could be easy enough to weave into the story. Each lantern is unique though, Kyle and John have some of the most amazing constructs. I don't expect to see any of that in the game though. So far what I've seen is lackluster...green hammers, yellow buzz saws.
I'm in the same boat GL was my favorite character next to the flash.
Right there with ya on this one. I'm pretty dissapointed in not having light powers at launch, but I find it an accpetable alternative if there was a full blown GL expansion; paid for or otherwise.
My only real problem with the direction that the devs (and the majority of the community) are taking with this is that they seem to be leaving out the other "light" characters. There have been light powers in the DC universe that havn't come from the emotional spectrum.
From Dr. Light's Wiki (Hoshi):
Doctor Light has the ability to manipulate ambient light for a variety of purposes. She can absorb all forms of illumination, and release that absorbed energy as blinding flashes of light, or destructive laser beams. She can refract lightwaves to create holographic images. Doctor Light can focus photons into "hard light" (a fictional form of energy which acts like a solid object), and fire blasts of pure force or create protective barriers. She can fly by riding lightwaves. She can also turn into light thus making her invisible to the naked eye. She can make blasts of destructive energy. Her weakness is that she needs a light source to fuel her powers, and being placed in an area of absolute darkness severely weakens her abilities.
Granted, most of the populace is not aware of the minor light characters, but a Light powerset could have been included without interfering with a Lantern Corps future.

So yet another SOE game is going to release that is not feature complete. Yes we are used to it by now, but why should we be? Would you settle for buying a new car but having to wait for the steering wheel to come in the mail? Would you settle for buying an HDTV that had no HD until they patch it in later? I am so sick and tired of these half-assed releases and a company with several solid games under their belt should have NO excuse for releasing incomplete.
They have plenty of resources to extend the release date and realease a finished product. We as consumers keep allowing these companies to walk all over us and they will never change unless we do. This whole article is one paragraph after another, supporting their decision to launch an incomplete game, justifying it even. YOU, William Murphy, are part of the problem.
Dove played a huge role in the Blackest Night, using her light powers. I thought the power sets had an inspired by option. So having a light power doesn't mean you are automatically a GL, or any member of the other rainbow corps. Perhaps that is their problem. How do they introduce a generic Light Based power set that isn't tied to lanterns. If you pick ligh powers are you automatically a lantern?
not all power sets have "an Inpired by option" and they going live with only 6 power sets.
LoL There are a lot of people in the DC Universe that have great personalities, but GL was one of the few with a cool powerset to back it up. Pity.
Worry not my friends, I am sure you will be able to buy what ever color ring you want in the cash shop. JK

Actually, the game is fairly "feature rich". Just because some of us aren't happy that one powerset is not ingame, doesn't make the game incomplete. We could hate on the game all day long about what we think should be in at lauch, but at the end of the day, every company has to decide how much is enough for launch.
A good game has room to grow without feeling like it is lacking.

I'd rather have them implement the Rings in a Blackest Night/War of Light event instead of offering them at lauch. It would be much more fun and starts to set the game apart from other MMO's.
Tbh, GL coprs is the least interesting part of DC comics for me. They are self-righteous folks, policing everyone around and almost always fail when it is REALLY important. I don't like the mentality of folks like Hal Jordan or Guy Gardner one bit. No clue what people find so cool about GL. *shrug*
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Agreed, i think the arguement for me is if then GL's are in then like all others heroes in the game their Villian must be too ....that means SinCorp ...that what i need/want.
GL wasn't one of my favorite heroes, but I get it, their powers are pretty cool, yielding to whatever they imagine. It has plenty of different uses, but apart from the ways you can manipulate the ring, the characters themselves were never really that interesting to me.
I think its good that they leave them out at launch, I can only imagine the story behind introducing them into the game. If you're going to do it right, and have it go along with the story, then it is something that they will need to take care with. It would be nice if everything was always put into the game at launch, but I like the room to grow. It always gives you something to look forward to.
Making a game with Green Lanterns as a playable class would be like making Saiyans from DBZ a playable race in the dbz mmo.
Next, people will be expecting to be able to make Kryptonians, as if, get your own powers and origin.
*edited for clarity
In this game everyone is human and then "mutated" to get their powers by exobytes. the thing is that obatining a RING that is sentient in it's own right, isnt really a mutation grantable by the exobytes.
i dont know anyting about dbz so i cannot comment
***P.S. - another thing that irritates me is if GL are not going to be in the game, they SHOULD NOT have screenshots and all the other stuff up there about them....it's very misleading.***
It seems in the recent panel video they discussed the corps a bit. They stated that corps is something big and very important to the DC Universe and they will be adding it to the game, but it's going to be on a large scale.
What that means for character actually becoming part of the corps, I can't really say, but it assures me that it is going to be part of the game and that they are considering giving it the sort of magnitude that it should have in the DC Universe. I can say I'm at least happy with that.
No matter how cynical you become, its never enough to keep up - Lily Tomlin
Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Alan Scott (not a member of the corps, having a power ring not from OA, and yet still a GL) and Sinestro are in game. You just can't be like them.

Right that is what i meant, sure they are in game, I could care less if i can SEE them, i WANT TO BE THEM, ok not really, i just want the ring.....and yellow.
Do you have the ability to instil great fear?
