After watching that video and seeing the players stand there whacking at each other with lightsabers, I have to pass on this one. Ultima Online, a game released in 1997, had a much more involved combat.
At least we have story and voiceovers, right?
haven't you already passed on this one? are we supposed to care each and every time you find another excuse to pass on a game you've already passed on?
I'm not posting this for your benefit. I don't know who you are, nor do I care to find out. I am, however, disappointed that such a great IP (my favorite) is being completely butchered. Basically, I'm posting my feedback on a news article in the news section of this website.
Don't get me wrong, I'm flattered for the attention but why do you care about what I post?

Your a space bar jumper eh? But really I thought the animations have greatly improved.

roflmao, not often a post makes me cry from laughing so hard...
I wonder if people will be jumping around, running through each other, and spinning like tops to avoid oriented damage in this game...

I've been asking the same question since the first release this morning, what makes TOR so much worse crafting when essentially in all mmorpg's with crafting it comes down to you clicking a button and the computer generating an item for you. People keep complaining that your companions do all the crafting (which I have never once seen said by BW) but this is relevant only if they just run off and do what they chose to on their own, if you click a button and choose what they craft it is essentially the same as every other game with crafting no matter how much the naysayers try and delude themselves.
As far as the criticism goes, I think most of the negative comments here have been sensible in that they have tended to offer up an opinion of what they think of the games development and then moved on, where I have a problem is when people start preading misinformation which I haven't seen at all here yet.
1. You've never played EQ2 or Vanguard
2. Read the previous comments, as there is one about how you will go around trying to find a crew that is good at crafting, and finding a good crew member could be like "epic loot" - which may or may not be true, but it's certainly an innovative feature if it is.
The video of the combat bothers me in that I can't tell who the dark side and who the light side teams are - which isn't a problem in LOTRO, EQ (race war), Warcraft or Warhammer games, and isn't ever a problem while watching Star Wars movies.
You can tell who is dark side or light side by their race, armor, gear, and light saber color. Or I could, most people will be able to by the time they start pvp.

This was what I was referencing.
I was referring to the fact that there is no movement and no fluidity to the combat. I've experienced this game's PvE combat and just like in most MMOs, PvE is pretty stationary and static. However, if you watch the PvP videos of most MMOs (including UO), they are much more action packed. But this PvP video looked very static. That was my point.
I'm a huge Star Wars and BioWare fan so I'm sort of hoping that this game will turn out to be great but every recent bit of information seems to disappoint me.

If you replace each character class in the video with a WoW class how is it any different? It looks static because they are showing base vanilla PvP tactics. Not real life PvP tactics...
IMO even though it was the lowest level of PvP tactics it was still interesting to watch because of the chance for melee weapons to collide and blaster bolts to hit specific parts of the body. Other than that I don't expect Bioware to reinvent PvP combat lol, nor have they said so.

They really, really need to work on the animations. Or hire new animation people that can notice what is going on. I hope they get that part of it worked out.

Granted that this is the first (more like second actually) PvP video we have seen of the game but I think that WoW's PvP combat looks more action packed.
As far as weapons colliding and stuff, that's just animations played depending on the dice roll. It's not like you're actually blocking the lightsaber or blaster bolts. The game has determined that your character has won the "block," or whatever, roll and the proper animation is played. Most MMOs have the same thing, only not as involved.
Some interesting information and better thna yet another lore webisode...I would want to knwo a lot mroe before making a decision on these features. As to the video...well it looked mor eliek a trailer to me with selected video of PvP to highlight certian features,I'll wait to see a video of people actually PvPing in realtime before drawing any conclusions.
So heres an idea leave tor blogs alone and go do something else. If u dont like the game or how it sounds just go away. Its not like your gonna ever buy this game.If u hate this game right now u are never gonna play it so why spew hate all over the forums about i?
Im serious why do u have to go put a damper on every post about tor. Its not your job to make me no play it. Its my job to decide what game i will or wont play what sounds good to me and what doesnt. Its not up to u to choose what the community as a whole enjoys or has fun doing as a whole.
There hadn't been a single post prior to your fanboi rant that would warrant what you just said. I also didn't see anybody say they hated it, the worst was a guy saying that he 'probably' won't play.
Well the main reason (you may already know these) is a lot of people are really passionate about some things:
Story: A lot of MMOs will give you lore but when it comes down to story, most are just not that interesting, some see this as a big thing and other don't, thus opinions on whether it's a needed feature or not arise.
The company: Again quite a few people believe this company is going to make a great game merely due to their record (hint: i'm one of them) and there are others who are skeptical (for good reason) about whether it merely being the company will be enough.
The partner company (ie the funder): Once people heard EA was involved they got a lil skidish (that a word?) because EA is known for pushing deadlines, however EA is one of the main backer of games so they tend to be a little disconnected with games they back and want it to make money as soon as possible regardless if it's finished or not.
The IP: To get down to it, you got three types of people: Those that like the star wars world, those who don't care for it and those who love it to pieces. The problem is you got those three trying to get what they want out of one game. Those that like it will play it cause it's star wars, i get a lightsaber and can shoot lighting from my finger tips, cool. Those that don't care for it but will still play it cause its interesting and looks like their type of game, or are more into the story then the actual IP itself. Then you got those that love it to pieces, these can go both ways, if they see something they like it's a major boon to the game and they will praise it to high noon. If they see something that doesn't fit into the star wars world, they will be the first to bash it in the ground with the biggest plus whatever hammer then can find.
You throw all these types into one game and add a little bit of people who don't care for the game at all and spice it up with those that see a chance to just cause problems and you get a recipe for some really interesting and heated debates and in the case of the latter flame wars.
Thus it's really no wonder it tends to be so popular. Star wars in and of it self is already a major success, regardless of what anyone says.
Then you got me: i love stories, alingment systems, and choices in my story line. I've been waiting a long time for this sorta game so those are my reasons to really want it to succeed where as other games i go meh pass or fail as long as it's fun i'm happy.
PS: thats my motive for really wanting to push this games success those first three things there.
As for the video, good to see some normal content, proves it's an actual MMO to some extent and feeds into some of things the devs been saying (gives devs some creditability to some who were not sure).
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Gosh, I expected to be underwhelmed, but *that* underwhelmed? I watched the video on the main site and I just do not like the "feel" of the game at all. I know running animations are often bad but these, plus the jerky combat, have me wincing away from the screen.
At one stage I was rooting for SWTOR and then somewhere along the way it stopped being an exciting game...
I have to say I was a little underwhelmed by the video myself. Not that it matters, I'm still playing this game regardless.
As for crafting, I'm holding off my judgement on that. I did like the quote something along the lines of "you don't want to see Darth Vader on the side of the road picking flowers". It does have a certain amount of sense that main character isn't going to have much time to devote to crafting so he/she will have their companions do it. I have to admit that I like doing it myself, but we'll see.

Isn't that like saying about jumping, "Oh that's animations. It's determined by the server. When you press the space bar it plays an animation. There are no real physics involved."
Ofcourse the weapons colliding and blaster bolts hitting body parts are determined by dice rolls. Ofcourse they are animations. This is a MMO. But I am really amazed by it. Never seen it to this level before in any MMO. It's makes the combat look 90% more real.
The thing I'm most concerned about is character movement. Those characters running around like they had sticks up their backsides did not impress. I have to admit that WoW spoiled me. It's the most smooth playing game I've ever played outside the fps genre. Every move you made felt smooth and natural and no other MMO I've played really had character movement work so well. Not only did it feel smooth and natural, but it looked smooth and natural.
I tried LOTRO when it went f2p and did not last long because the movement felt so awkward to me. It just didn't feel right. So yeah, that's an important aspect of any game for me. I really hope Bioware works hard to get TOR to play as smoothly.
Finally we get some pvp and crafting info and unsurprisingly it's instanced battlegrounds and crafting not even done by your player character. While I'm not surprised and perhaps others are enthused, this is simply another reason for me to not play this game. Perhaps when more pvp info comes out I will change my mind, but I doubt it.
i fully agree to this statement. this is not a virtual world, yet. it seems to be just another game-hub. not my way of MMO. is there still hope?
Well, the PvP looks pretty disappointing. I'm not really into that so I don't anticipate TOR changing anything there. But at least the crafting news sounds interesting.

I love how many mixed opinions there are for this game. Out of the entire top ten most hyped games, this one has the most hits.
The video was great. Can't wait to try it myself. Was nice to have some solid information.
So in the modern age of MMORPG's, 8 vs 8 = A Warzone?
Sounds kind of depressing. I mean there are a lot of things you can call it, but 'Warzone' would be the last on my list.
2 points:
1st: movement doesnt look too fluid by now, but i guess they'll improve it soon (warhammer had impropper swim animations till release....)
2nd: i surely hope 8 vs 8 is NOT the max here
....err 3 points.
3rd: looks fun

16 players, if everyone uses a companion it's 32 on the battlefield. Why want more? to get the fight a mess? no thank you.
The crafting looks... Refreshing. I must say i'm surprised.
