I'm about to give this gamea try... really just looking for something to hold me over 'till GW2 and SW:Tor... Played WoW for years, first as a pally, then a 'lock, but i've long since burned out.

Any suggestions as far as class/race?

Anything I need to know?

LotrO doesn't really have any classes like the pally or the lock.  The closest might be the Capt (for the Pally) and the Lore Master (for the lock).  There are some similiarities, but not many.  The Capt is a hyrbid class that can sometimes tank (not on anything really difficult) has some party buffs and can heal (sometimes, many of the heals are procs).  The LM (Lore Master) has a pet, and offers a great deal of CC and other things that benefit the party (single target heals, just small ones; removing debuffs on party members; being a power battery... transferring power to other players).

A good place to start is with a hunter or a champion.  Both are "easy" classes (even though that's not the best word, as they can be very complex as well), and are pretty durable.  The hunter kites a bit more (akin to a WoW mage).  And the Champ is great in close combat (he does a lot of PBAoE damage).

Minis are also a solid starting point, as they can self heal, and do respectable damage.

Well if you've been a pally and lock that long i suggest something totally different.

Maybe a Champ or LM  maybe even a Burg.

Lotro has some strange classes, experiment a bit.

If you want something unique then play a Warden, Warden is probably one of the best classes I have ever played in any MMO...and I usually hate tank classes.

Wardens are fun and unique. If you want the challenge of a softer class with some good CC then try the Loremaster.  Loremasters are great support to any group becuase the have a rez . Your guy basically takes a rip off of some sweatleaf in a pipe then blows it on the the "dead" party member. But since the characters technically lose "morale" instead of health, then you could say that you just cheered up someone who was bummed out haha.  Plus there a couple mezzes and stuns and also some roots.  Various pets that each have their own specialty, i.e. tanking, dps, buff, debuff and what-not. The cool thing is, he really isn't a magic user, more like a combat chemist.  He is the hippy of Middle Earth.

Yeah i didnt want to suggest any of the expansion classes because i didnt know if the OP was planning on actually paying for lotro. If you are OP i would totally try the two xpac classes Warden and Rune-Keeper. both are good classes

I enjoyed playing Warden before i left the game, my primary was a cl50 champion though. for base content if your just on the free to play i'd probably suggest Champion or Hunter (depending on if you prefer ranged or melee DPS), Captains are pretty cool and i started playing mine more than my champ in the end, good solo and good in groups, tbh in my opinion a decent captian is essential in groups as a backup for almost any role. If you are fully subbing and purchase mines of moria then give Warden a try, because of the way their combat works once you get used to that the other classes systems will seem fairly easy to get to grips with.

Warden is for sure my favorite class from any mmo I've ever played.  Mainly for its uniqueness.  If you have never played one it's worth it to roll one up just to check it out.
