     I don't want a WoW killer.

I stopped playing seven or eight months ago, because I realized I'm finally completely bored with the game. However, it's a great game and I think the fact that the game is so successful and has such a strong draw that it helps keep really bad mmos from being more successful then they are.

What I mean is if a player from WoW plays another game that doesn't at least have some measure of decency that player has a really good game to go back to.

I think that this encourages some MMO developers to attempt to achieve a greater level of quality in their games. I think more and more MMO developers are starting to realize that if they can't compete with WoW they aren't going to be the next big thing.

I think WoW's booming success is a big reason why many MMOs are going free to play. (Among other reasons)

I don't want WoW to die (And it certainly won't), because I want it to encourage competition so more quality mmo's eventually come out and frankly, WoW currently has no competition.

Well, as Type O negative said: Everything dies.

The questions are just if anyone actually have to kill it and if it is even morally correct to hope someone does.

Wow will die. So will you and me but hopefully none of us soon. And judging from EQ will Wow still be around for at least another 6 years and probably twice that even if it wont having millions of players all that time, not even in Zorndorrfs imagination.

This whole thread seems kinda pointless to me.

This is a good point. I mean, it sucks that WoW ruined the genre. But now that its here and not going anywhere for the time being, maybe we actually need it. It will make developers strive to make their games different from WoW but at the same time make quality games that actually have some playability to them.

I think only Blizzard can kill WoW.

Whatever their next MMO is will do it.

I want a WoW killer for the same reasons that I would like to see Walmart and McDonalds die. I dislike the lowest common denominator appeal the game has. On one level, I really don't care if WoW lives or dies because I don't play it. On another level, I dislike WoW only because it is big and powerful and has caused so many crappy clones to be born. But I guess I don't really have any good reason worth defending here. I just don't like it.

I deal with this by thinkng that WoW itself is a genre. There is WoW and inferior-WoW-type knock offs with various gimmicks to try to differentiate themselves.

Then there are other games like EVE, Darkfall, Mortal Online, etc. that are doing their own thing. I am not saying any of these games are better or worse, but they are not WoW, not trying to be like WoW, and of course, cannot kill WoW. They are in a different genre as far as I'm concerned. So that's where I will stay.

Well I kind of see WoW doing what it does best and change to meet new player demand.  They knew that competition is coming up with TOR and a couple other big hitters so they decided to make an upgrade in the graphics which is arguably the only thing "wrong" with the game at this point.  Noone rational is going to argue that the gameplay isn't "fun" in what it attempts to be.  Millions of people don't play games that are "no fun".

I haven't played in years and don't really like the style much but I can certainly see why people do.  When the game gets "old" and the subs start to fall I wouldn't be surprised if they just reimagined it in another form with a new engine or something along those lines.

If people are hoping that WoW dies and that the fall of it creates an environment that allows better and more immersive games to be created than I would certainly see their point.  I think there will be a form of WoW for as long as the MMORPG genre exists though.

It wont happen. Some people will say Wow is better no matter what the new game will be and unless Blizz themselves actually pulls the plug while Wow still have over 100K players there is no chance for that.

There is a reason EQ still is around. Some people are very nostalgic and that kind wont give up Wow as long as the server is up-

You're welcome to your opinions, and you're more than welcome to start a thread or join another thread in which the topic is applicable, but for this thread,  that's completely off topic.

As shitty as WoW is, i would say no , but that would be to keep the emo raging arrogant small teenagers or other annoying people playing WoW and let us mature adults play our games.

And thank god this is the internet where you don't make any rules  and your posting this in the "pub" section.

If blizzard roled everything back to WoW Classic i would play it, i love the good old 60's days with world pvp actually being a reality and everything.

Well, if we look at it from this perspective, then I have to agree with you. WoW will not die for many, many years.

The perspective I was coming from was "what would knock WoW off the top of the subscriber charts."

But yes, WoW will probably "always" be around in one form or another just like people still talk about UO or DAoC and still play it.

I want to see a WoW-killer because WoW has defined the genre for too very long -- and it isnt that good a game -- simply polished like brass candlesticks.

The genre needs to advance but it hasnt due to WoW's anchor.

We need a WoW-killer before the genre dies.

I thought they were reimagine it right now? Anyways, they wont change engine. But I can bet money that their third MMO will be Wow 2, that is usually how Blizzard work.

    Diablo> Starcraft > Diablo 2 > Wow > Warcraft 3 > Starcraft 2 > Diablo 3... See a pattern?

But even if Wow 2 is out will always some old timers prefer Wow classic and the game will be online for a looong time.

As for Wow being wrong or right, it just depends on who you asks. It really wont work for me personally but many people love it and are happy with it so they are doing something right.

But of course what will happen in the future is unknown and I am not 100% sure Blizzards next MMO will be a huge hit too, past success does not always mean future success too, the new game will have to prove itself on it's own merits.

As a wise man said: "The future is like the @ss of a baboon, colorful and filled with crap". :)

Oh, yeah. that will happen pretty soon. 2012 0r 2013 I think.

It depends on how you count, in some ways are it already beaten. Wow have 2 playerbases now, westeners who play monthly fees of 15 bucks and Chinese who pay 12 cents an hour.  And adding those 2 together is kinda cheating, the Chinese should be compared to games like Perfect world instead, and there is Wow beaten with many millions.

The 3,5-5,5 Million westerners still makes Wow the top dog by 8 times or so and make Blizz incredible rich but if another games get more western player than so I would say it passes Wow, Blizz earning on 8 million Chinese players are surprisingly low and many of those players play an hour a month or even less.

All that said, still having that many players paying 15 bucks a month after 6 years is amazing, Blizzard must have warehouses full with money after that. Not to mention box sales, expansions, merchandise and so on.

Well look at MMOs when WoW first came out. What was their peak life time? Two...maybe three years tops? 5 years later and WoW has finally hit their peak. They may have a couple more years or so in it before other games seriously start to decline their player base.

Other, older games, are still around, but they are long past their peak.

It's true it's only a matter of time, before WoW "dies", but it's going to be around long after it's peak and then some.

I'm hoping it stays strong long enough to encourage developers to produce something that isn't crap.

The millions playing the unstoppable giant.

But -- I hope WoW is not replaced by another unstoppable giant. That couldn't be good, either. It would be more of the same, only newer.

I want to see competition in the industry flourish.

I never played UO, but I want to see something of this elusive great sandbox game using current technology. I want to see lots of niche games thriving.

you need to shut up about "wow killer" WoW wont die, it's will always have it's fan base. just like every other game

Until WoW is not the dominant mmo on the market the genre will never advance beyond where it's at now.  We will continue to see game after game chasing after the WoW player base.

To show that the issue is not WoW.  To see all the /facepalms and /tears of those that think WoW not being at the top would change a thing about the direction that the MMORPG industry is taking.

    Nom...nom...nom.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

What is a WoW Killer? I have never played WoW, so not sure if I want one or not.

  • rozenblade1rozenblade1 Member CommonPosts: 501

I dont want a WoW killer...

    I want WoW KILLERS (plural)...

I want a genre full of options!...those options being a healthy number of fun, well polished mmos.

I don't want a juggernaut of a game to come and take all of WoWs 10 million players or whatever it may be...I want a bunch of games to come and spread that tumor of players around like some warm "I Can't Believe it's not Butter" over a beautifully toasted piece of multigrain wheat bread!

    PLAYING: NOTHING!!!
PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM

    WAITING FOR: Dust 514

I want Diablo III to kill WoW.  I know...not the same thing and fat chance, but I'm still pissed at Blizzard for dropping that IP for so long.  I knew before WoW came out that WoW pretty much meant the end of Diablo.  Back then they were a lot smaller so all the devs were working on WoW and Diablo was already collecting dust.  Diablo II is over 10 years old and people still play.

I'm happy they are coming out with a third installment, but I know they won't put forth the effort they give to their cash cow.

    Curiosity.

Honestly, I don't hate World of Warcraft.  Just its rabid, holy-war, banner waving fanbase.

I'd just like to see exactly what type of game would have to come out in order to stop something so impossibly large and epic in scale.

WoW, for all of its faults, is 'nearly' perfect.   They try a little of this.  Tinker with a little of that.   They seem to know just that exact 'sweet spot' to hit in order to keep people playing.

It was born out of a perfect storm of the online gaming collapse and following stragglers who were looking for a new home.

The story was there.  The fanbase was ready to grow.   They had the money

It may happen again.   Who knows.
