It's the age old question, no not the chicken and the egg, why do people insit on being jerks in MMOs ? We all have encountered those who just want to be rude. To me I don't get offended or upset, I just blocked them and move on. But why do you think people want to be rude to you in a game? Because they can, most likely, but are there any other reasons that you can think of? Community is the biggest factor in determining the MMO I will play unless I really really enjoy the MMO I will put up with it. I am really liking my time in Darkfall but the community is bad (but if you join a clan it is the other way around...very nice and helpful). Do 'mean' players piss you off or do you not care?

because in real life they get snot kicked out them or something. behind game million miles away they can be nerd and a bully.
It's human nature to think of yourself not only better than others but to downplay their strengths. The anonimity of the Internet just makes it so people can't keep it to themselves.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
I'm a jerk in real life, that's why!
Honestly though, with anonymity, why not do what you like, no real consequences?
Isn't it sad that behavior can be so severely modified by lack of accountability?
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
I don't take them seriously. No-one should. Trolls don't live in the forums alone. Remember that. It is fun for them only if they get the attention they are after. Or maybe they just don't think that much of it. Who knows? Who cares?

In real life, somebody's being a jerk to you than you can:
-punch the mother%&/( in the face (like that &/()= Snooki)
-sue his ass
-threaten him and his %&/()
-if ur weaker, than get your friends together and beat him up
-go to police
-get him kicked out of his job/school, rap his girlfriend/break em up /igonore his pleas for help when hes really in trouble etc
-social pressure (everybody sees what a jerk he is and ignores him/situation forces him to change his behaviour etc
-IF ALL ELSE FAILS, and your totally crazy; pull out your,,,, emm,, how to say it without getting banned,,,, TOYS and well,, let him meet his god allmighty face to face.
AND so on and so on.....
PEOPLE GET SCARED OF EITHER
A) YOU
OR
OTHER CONSEQUENCES IN REAL LIFE.
That goes for us all as long as we are ''normal'' human beings.
NOW on the internet,,,, just as everyone else pointed out, you can do OR AT LEAST SAY whatever you want, and there are almost NO CONSEQUENCES.
Being a jerk, say hello to mr. anonymosity
mr anonymosity, say hello to mr. jerk.
They go hand in hand.
PS!
It is my personal opinion that ESPECIALLY PEOPLE ''OPPRESSED IN REAL LIFE'' such as guys/gals who are being treated like shiyyat in real life by other people around them, create a huge lot of negative emotions LOCKED UP IN THEM, which they DARE NOT to unleash in real life (because they are too scared of the consequences) SO they end up being real a&/(% on line instead.
For example:
(kid gets bullied by everyone,(- parents dont give a jack/ or seeking outside help only makes things worse-) doesnt have the guts or strenght to speak up to his oppressors in RL; goes online, and tadaa! We got a whole new slew of teenage angst!) etc etc
Well, i hope this at least sheds a little bit of light into your question.
just my two cents
yep ignore the jerks and they will give up. that or have few friends willing to group with them.
LOL you know, people were a lot nicer back in UO when running your mouth got you killed, looted, and destitute.
Perhaps fear really is the only base motivation that prevents us all from becoming animal!
If you ask yourself 'why don't I do X' ...well, it is likely that you are afraid of Consequence Y

In Everquest if you were a dickhead you just were never invited to groups, so basically Game Over.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
For the same reason people are jerks on forums.
Really depends on the MMO, and what sort of people are on the server. (Cultural difference, demographics and such things.)
Jerks can annoy me to the point I blacklist them but the problem is that now MMO populations are much larger than they used to, have fewer consequences, and less dependancy on other players(very solo friendly) the jerks can be even more rampant, doing as they please, short of getting banned.
Thought I replied to this thread but my reply disappeared.
I can't speak for everyone else, but for me, I'll only choose to be a jerk if I feel someone deserves it. Like in Runes of Magic... in that game it is so much fun to mess with people because they all whine like little kids when you PK someone. If someone cares so much about a video game, which they shouldn't in the first place, I might mess with them a bit just to push their buttons. People shouldn't be so obsessed with video games. Real life is out there, ya know.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
people are jerks simply because they can and a lot of people get a kick out of pissing people off. just go to youtube and listen to a ventrilo harrassment video. That's why I love and think an ignore/block feature is the best thing ever, no amount of epic gear can beat that feature.
...and so do i. But lets not kid ourselves. There are as many folks that are jerks in real-life as their are in gaming....as mentioned, it's the anonymity of the net that gives them that extra shielding from being 'known' and feeling safer to be a jerk.
Its because they are fat and get picked on a lot at school, or were picked on and made fun of. Their parents most likely hate them too or they got ignored as a child. So they take their anger and lash out at others on the internet. I imagine they live in their mothers basement screaming "GIVE ME MORE PIZZA AND DONUTS! NAOW!!!!" and never shower because they are too fat to move off their chair.
At least thats how I like to imagine jerks, griefers and 4chan members and other nasty internet people. It makes them seem so much sadder that way and makes me lol at them a lot. Then I don't get annoyed or mad, I just lol and then feel happy about myself.

From the sounds of your first paragraph, looks like you got a little bit bottled up yourself, eh?

so you live in your mothers basement and yell out for more porn? Thats brutal, lol.
a porn lair with free food sounds kinda cool.
Well, admittance is the first step on the road to recovery.
OP, your question's been answered pretty thoroughly. Why? Because they can. Why can they? Because of anonimity and a lack of real consequences. What can we do to fix the problem? Ignore them or, in a FFA PvP game, gank them repeatedly.
Actually its weird, in real life I can be a pretty mean jerk. I have little to no tolerance for stupid people who revel in their own stupidity, so I have little tolerance for most people. However in MMOs I actually am a pretty nice guy. I like working together with other people, I enjoy healing or other support type roles, and I enjoy helping other people out. Kinda weird how that works out.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
Interesting point about Ultima and Everquest. In Ultima running your mouth finds you without items, in Everquest you are without progression due to rquired grouping. With solo friendly MMO's and Carebear PvP mechanics you allow people to be assholes without repurcusion, bringing out the worst in an online community, funny that. Sadly, with more streamlining and accessable game direction, expect the trend of jerks, assholes, douchebags and nimrods to increase.
Personally, im usually a nice guy in MMO's, I try to treat everyone kind and with respect, some kind of Videogame Karma where what goes around comes around, except those mouthpieces hardly ever get their comeuppance, and I dont always get treated nicely, ahh well, at least I can be optimistic in a videogame even when im such a pessimist IRL.
Greed. Base anything items recieved people will greed over those items.
Because they are jerks IRL, and they can.
The irony is that MMOs are an aspect of RL because of the principal ingredient: Live People.
Wherever you go, there you are.
