Races - SWTOR

How do you guys feel about the released playable races so far?  Are you concerned about the class restrictions for each race?  Does the fact that the population might be 95% Zabrak Jedi Knights bother you?  Would you like any races added or dropped?

I personally think that the Kel Dor or Wookiee would be great additions.  I mean seriously it would be badass playing a Wookiee.

Discuss anything you'd like about the current races in SWTOR!

Here are some images of some current possible playable races from the SW Wiki:

Human

Rattataki

Twi’lek

Chiss

Sith Pureblood

Mirialan

Zabrak

Miraluka

Be careful what you post here. I already got jumped on because I left an 'e' off of Wookiee lol. I think like in any game, there is always going to be one choice that out does the other. My hope is that that the replayability factor with the branching story lines leads to so many alts from everyone that it won't make much of a difference in the end. Maybe at the beginning it will be more apparent. I also wish there weren't all humanoids, but they all look pretty cool to me and who knows, even if they don't release more maybe they will in expansions (if the game is successful). I think there is enough variety in the classes themselves which is more important to me.

we'll im surprised there are even twi´leks at all tbh.

the rest are all humans with different coloured skin, hairstyles (or horns) and goggles.

just give them a different name and voilá, you've got  "variety".

  • whilanwhilan Member UncommonPosts: 3,472

Looks good for launch a few races to choose from. Glad they have twi'lek in there. Gives some variety.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

When I look at these side-by-side, I think:

"Hmm, do I want to be Blue, Red, Red, Green, Green, Biege (Caucasian), Biege, or Grey?"

So no, I'm not to concerned about being limited by race-specific class choices.  At worst it'll limit my choices to red, green, and biege.  That's still 3/5 possible colors!

Sheesh... Looks like Star Trek. Or not. At least Star Trek had different noses, foreheads or ears! These just are humans with other face paint!

    Bah.

I really really want this game to be good, but again every time I see or hear something new about the game, my personal hype meter drops about 2 points.

Before this post, it was already somewhere in the vicinity of -20. The most expensive MMO in history, can't even do the major races in the IP they are trying to capitalize on.

Wtf are Chiss, Sith Pureblood, and Miaralan? Are they even in Star Wars?

I mean FFS, they don't even have a Wookiee. I could understand all these races, if they had a Wookiee. A Wookiee is by far the most iconic piece of the Star Wars legacy, probably even more iconic than the Jedi themselves.

When I was 5 or 6 in the 80s, I had no idea what Star Wars was. But, I knew who Chewbacca was.

What freak alien races I can play really doesn't matter to me. I only care about whether or not the game will be fun. From what I've seen so far, I think it will be. Still, I know there are a lot of people around here who will be really upset if they can't play a three headed mutant... go figure.

This honestly should be the MMO i'm looking forward to more than any other, but i stopped keeping up with it a long time ago.

Not really impressed by anything so far, the least of which are the plastic looking character models.

I see the Wookie making it in a later expansion.

Race/class restrictions is nothing new, it works in WoW/EQ2 and undoubtedly other games, So I'm thoroughly used to having to think about my selection rather than taking a stab in the dark and going with something that looks pretty =).

Some races will prove popular, no matter whats on offer something will always outshine the others, I go with whats going to suit me best, I don't follow the flock.

I am perfectly happy with what races they have, yes I was a Wookie in SWG and I was a little disappointed there isn't one presently to choose from in SWTOR, but all the other choices look good to me, and as I said in the beginning of my post they are probably saving the best ever race in Sci/Fi for an expansion =)

Haven't the Wookiees been demoted to companion characters for now?  I agree that they should be a playable race although, at this point in time, they could quite easily add or remove playable races/species.  We will just have to wait and see what they do for launch.

With an IP such as Star Wars they really could have done much better than this. In this day and age, people expect diverse race choices in their MMORPGs. The more I see on this game, the more I realize that this is probably not going to be my cup of tea.

These races was annouced ages ago..

Chiss are very well known in star wars, they are even in SWG and the films if i'm not mistaken.

Sith pureblood are in star wars.

Miaralan is and was even in the new SW films.

They have stated why they want human like races. I'm a little disappointed myself with the races as i wanted to play a Mon Cal. But i'm also not that fussed about it, end of the day its just a race. I'm all covered up in gear by the end game.

Meh...SWG taught me to always pick a Human no matter what...so I'm fine with the choices. Most people will pick these races anyway, so whatever. More or less, I honestly don't care in the least.

I think they more or less have been, as we've seen Bowdaar listed among the companions.

This is just me, but honestly...I dont care. My avatar has never been a make or break part of a game for me. I'm not dismissing it, because I know it does matter to other people.

I guess I'm more concerned with how "fun" I find the game itself. If the content is good, then I could care less about the avatar, I'll deal with it. If the content sucked, then I'd probably start picking apart other parts of the game I did not care for. Would I like to play some wierd races? Maybe, but that's never been the "key" feature for me.

I usually run human or close thereof myself. I tend to be more interested in how smooth the pvp is. This subject does not concern me very much.

Personally I was always Human or Zabrak in SWG so the race choices don't bother me. I could see why it would bother others though, I can't blame them for asking for more. I'm wondering if they have any more in store or not, it's hard to say though with this IP there a lot of choices.

Actually, that's EXACTLY where I expect to find more eventually...in a cash store.

    As a side note....

I do kind of wonder what non-human avatars would mean in terms of loot, and gear modeling. How much time to change up loot tables to drop items that would "fit" for the non-human races?

I see that as pointed to as a development concern, but I wonder if the time/cost investment is the largest reason for not having non-human avatars as opposed to any other limitations. (or the George Lucas limitation about "XYZ race" cant be a jedi or whatever....)

I won't argue with you on that, I wouldn't be surprised seeing that myself. Especially with EA taking over and having more control in their hands.

If I'm not mistaken the choice was more along the lines of which races can speak basic and which can't. I've also heard romance had something to do with it as well, I don't know how true that is.

It was the infamous "If you cant see the toon kissing Princess Leia" comment that did it, and that's a good point, I definitely wasnt thinking about the implications of how that would impact the story.

You know, if you take that as the prime reason (story) for not having non-human avatars, I really wonder if we ever will see them available, via expansion or a cash shop.

Sure, playable Wookiees would be nice at launch, they are in the movies/books, but who says they won't be in an expansion?  Races/classes generally get added as games evolve.

I just want a good, playable, polished game at release that has enough content to keep me playing until that first expansion.  I'm sure we can all agree that we, as gamers, are sick and tired of paying to beta test games as has been the trend lately.  I'll take the races they have at launch as long as the game is polished and actually ready when they do release it.  If we do get a good game at launch, then by all means, let's start asking/demanding for those races that are not playable to made so...
