Vindictus: A First Look

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

A lot of attention has been focused on Nexon's Vindictus billed as the first 'physics based MMO'. MMORPG.com's Carolyn Koh has been spending time playing Vindictus since its launch recently and she has a lot to say about the game. Check out her thoughts about the Physics system; the UI, Controls & the World; Combat, Training, Crafting; the Avatar Shop; Initial Impressions; and Carolyn's final verdict. Have you tried Vindictus? Tell us what you think.

At first look, Vindictus, a “Free to Play” MMO looks like absolutely gorgeous. You pick a character from three available – Evie, a mage who uses magic and a staff, Lann who dual-wields and Fiona, who uses sword and shield – and are immediately dropped into a cut-scene, a movie introduction that Vindictus calls a Prologue. A giant spider, the town guardian has gone wild and is threatening the town folk and climbing up the bell tower, crumbling the stonework with its weight. You, the rookie are joined with a mercenary band, the Crimson Blades to stop it. Aodhan, the Captain calls for ballistae, but Tieve, the town Oracle puts herself in the way, begging for a chance to speak to it to calm it down and so a small party, you included, escort her into the bell tower.

  • I think I will try this out one rainy Sunday. It sounds fun, yet a bit shallow maybe?

Going into a 2D-hud when you enter small buildings is a neat thing... trying to run around in a small Inn with the camera following you but bouncing of the roof and walls all the time can be annoying... especially when all you want to do is talk to the Innkeeper anyway.

ya its shallow but its extremely fun.  The combat is addictive and keeps you logged in for hours and very entertained.  It plays like a single player action based dungeon crawler but with a much better multiplayer experience more like guild wars.

Its one of the few games I've played in the past 5 years that has made my wife interupt my gameplay and say "do you know what time it is?"  On the flipside, I can log in for 30 minutes and feel like I've accomplished something.

Pretty much sums up my own feelings on the game. It's pretty good at what it does, and doesn't bother trying to do a lot of other things. It may, in fact, not even be an MMO, but you don't really care while you're playing.

Remain to be seen how well it does in the future - for all its good points, there are also some glaring issues that are persisting for quite some time, and have a way of putting on a serious damper at times.

A great casual online multiplayer combat game.  No where near the depth of an MMO (at least, not yet) but Nexon seems committed to this game, including talk of future player housing and additional cities to travel to.

    Two corrections;

    1. The maps are not randomized, they are a handful of zones within the boat-instance that are exactly the same on each attempt. The order in which you traverse them is just rearranged depending on the specific battle you are on. If they actually were randomized I'd be in Diabloesque heaven right now.

    2. The rooms you enter to converse with NPCs are not 2d, but a fully rendered 3d space that has the camera pan slightly to show it off. You still can't move around within it, but you get the feeling that you could if they let you.

Played it, but not for very long. I was intrigued to see a "physics" based game but really it's physics if the form of gimmicky traps. It'll work for a console player but PC players will get very bored. It's a bit twitchy and the animations are still bugged though I'm not sure what the status it is. If it's beta scratch my last comment.

Vindictus is a solid online hack n' slack that is perfect when playing with a few buddies while waiting for server maintenance on your main mmorpg to finish. Not nearly as deep as a traditional mmorpg, but that's to be expected with combat this engaging. If future mmorpgs take one thing from Vindictus it should be the style of combat. If combined with a skill wheel sort of like Secret of Mana's weapon select, it would make for some very dynamic combat situations.

I haven't seen any bugged animations, in fact they seem to be well done. Anyway, it's a fun game to play for a bit now and then. My biggest issue with it is the lag when grouped up. I think it's based on whoever the group lead is? Other than that I've enjoyed playing it, even if it is a bit repetitive (but what "mmo" isn't?)

  • CastillleCastillle Member UncommonPosts: 2,679

Yes its based on where the leader is.  So please make sure to pick east or west coast depending on where you are lol.  Central people who have bad connections to both east and west just pick depending on which youre closer to (most central people tend to go to east to my experience)

Also, you can just make your own room and you wont lag:) everyone else will though.

Is the game still closed to people outside North America? I was kinda disapointed when I downloaded the game and just couldn't play.

Small correction on Carolyn's First Look: Ainle isn't a town like Colhen, it's a different "dungeon" zone like Perilous Ruins and Hoarfrost Hollow.

Fishing isn't all that great. Crafting, some people like it, some hate it. Personally I like that everything is based on loot so one way or another, if you don't NPC the items as soon a you get them, you usually have enough to craft your items. Otherwise you can sell what you don't need at the Marketplace and buy what you are missing. There's no trashasble item, every loot item is used somewhere so there's a demand for everything.

The game's presentation is nothing shy of absolutely gorgeous. To be honest, during the first tutorial mission my jaw just about hit the floor when I saw how well the art was done. I was later impressed when they did the first in-building dialog. The whole 2d-chat with npc with 3d moving background and ambient talking/noise really struck a good chord with me.

Sadly, the actual game on the other hand is entirely repetitive and surely aimed at a much more casual audience. Though, I admit, combat was pretty solid minus some serious lag at times. Swinging your sword and making contact with an enemy had a real solid feel to it.

Really would've love to see more out of a game with such astounding presentation.

I played this game during its first round of beta, and i was incredibly impressed with it even then. The gameplay itself is just visceral and fun. The graphics are very impressive and i suspect will age rather well. For being a F2P game, It puts alot of P2P games to shame. The only complaints about this game are more based on what this game isnt, rather than what it is. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes fun games, rather than people too hung up on game labels to determine there enjoyment.

i wanted to try this game but have hade a horrible time trying to download it. after it downloads a message pops up saying the file already exixts in the location im downloading it to and asks to re direct it to a diffrent location and restart the download from scratch... did this 4 times so i said F&*% it...

Good first look. Its a fun game, but it still has some rough edges to be concerned about.  One of the worst is the peer to peer system they use(they do not have dedicated servers).  Unless its just after the game has come up from being maintained, the lag can make the game unplayable.  I have a 22/4 meg connection which is normally much more than sufficient for any game.

The next is the decay system. Weapons and armor decay during use, and even complete repair doesn't fix that.  Only by enhancing can the decay be reset to zero. This gets more and more expensive as time goes on.

I really like the physics combat system, and if it could be expanded it would be even better.  Over all a good first attempt at a MMO physics game.

The game itself, think of it like Diablo, but in 3D.  Town though can have a lot or a little people (depending upon the channel you're in).  But dungeons are limited to 4 people.  All and all the game is fun honestly.  Whether it is an MMO or not.  It's still fun to play and that's what all games should be about.  Having fun.

Downside at the current time is the crashing, along with lag between characters in dungeons.  But with time those should go away I'm sure.  Overall, quick and easy to play.  Plug in a 360 controller and burn a few hours and your brain on a simple yet but fun game.

Actually no its not completely based around where the leader is *sighs* this is a misconception by some people.... Its a relay p2p setup -_- meaning  the host uploads to vindictus servers and then vidncitus outputs somewhat to other players... still using the persons connection but it traverses through a server prior to this. Sadly where lag ends up coming up is there seems to be a memory leak both in the NA and Korean versions of the server code base that the korean version of the game fixed by doing a daily restart (not a solution really cuz it doesnt fix the underlying problem but relieves the memory leak or whatever day to day...) if you will notice prime time on a maintenance day when its on time is still packed with about the same amount of people... but doesnt suffer the same lag as it does the day after...

There are ways they can fix this and really should examine why its happening ultimately but... if they adopt the korean method in the interim and reset at some point during the night we should get some alleviation from the lag. One can only hope they realize it though..... Prime example here of it being the relay server. I play with my friend often just me and this one other person in the room. Day maintenance hits they will get 4 -5 bars from me and vice versa... Day after maintenance 1-2 maybe 3 bars if lucky... Go from a pristine connection one day to a pos the next with the same connection no changes etc. Their relay server is either overloaded and needs and upgrade or is suffering a memory leak and needs to be fixed. Like i said the korean version does resets daily to alleviate it *shrugs* lets hope nexon wises up

I'm a PC gamer and I love it..

Don't make generalizations based entirely inside of your own feelings.

The game is FREE and its... amazing, for that. Best Free game i've ever touched.
