As a F2P player who has spent now in 5 weeks about 20 bucks, I enjoy it. I'm not going to get to play much at all during the holidays (unless I get snowed in somewhere) so yeah it seems fun.

A MMORPG needs a population. Even if the people talking in the ooc chat aren't the brightest people on the planet; just rolling in to a quest hub and seeing people playing music and chatting about standing around to see and be seen- It adds to the game.

I wasn't interested in every paying a sub for this game just because I've paid to play too many games like it before. But for free with me subbing to a game that's quite different; got a good crew of real life and ol' MMO comrades playing, it is fun.

Little Ceasars used to have the slogan:  "Little Ceasar's pizza pizza, the one that gives you two!"

I guess I should have sued them, since they never GAVE me 2 of anything.

"Defamation—also called calumny, vilification, slander (for transitory statements), and libel (for written, broadcast, or otherwise published words)—is the communication of a statement that makes a claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government, or nation a negative image. It is usually a requirement that this claim be false and that the publication is communicated to someone other than the person defamed (the claimant).[1]

In common law jurisdictions, slander refers to a malicious, false,[2] and defamatory spoken statement or report, while libel refers to any other form of communication such as written words or images.[3] Most jurisdictions allow legal actions, civil and/or criminal, to deter various kinds of defamation and retaliate against groundless criticism."

Two can play this game. You so sure of your facts that you think they would hold up in court when your best argument is "but it takes so long to farm the free points"?

Glad to see your having fun but anything ran by Turbine is a no-go for myself. LOTRO could have been sooo much more but it turned into a f2p (0 pvp) carebear MMO. The intentions were there but its nothing like a would have expected Tolkiens world to turn out like in a MMO unfortionately. I hope another company gives it a shot again someday.

Wasn't really trying to trip you up, you merely quoted something for information purposes one might say.

The point i was trying to make though is that its not up to us to decide wether the advertisement matches the product or not in the sense of the law, such decisions are for courts and the courts alone. Without a guilty verdict Turbine is in the right, there are a myriad consumer protection rings in the US and Europe, the fact that not a single one chose to act speaks volumes for me.

Accusing someone of breaking the law or causing injury to his buisness however is very much a no go, and infact a Defamation per se in most states in the US. Which is one of the reasons we do not see companies hurling accusations at each other all the day, its dangerous unless you have proof.

To me at least it smells weird. They went beyond the usual with their bold statement about "you shall not pay". most just leave it at "the adventure is free" which technically is true. The adventure is indeed free.

The phrase "You shall not pay" is indeed chosen badly imho, as it means about as much as "you will not pay". Which essentially is a prediction about the future one should not make if your entire business revolves around that(many) people will pay.

I'm pretty sure though they have run it by their lawyers though, and in the end its really the people that choose to pay. At no point does Turbine say you have to spend money to play the game. Its always down to the choice wether you want something now, or wether your patient to earn something the long way.

In the end though everyone knows its just a play on the famous words used by gandalf when stopping the balrog, saying "you do not have to pay unless your impatient or can't be bothered to farm TP, or want PvMP right now" somehow does not have the same ring to it.

Yeah, but the "the adventure is free" doesn't really correspond to the most memorable moment in the book, which was the whole point of the ad.

And I hate to break it to you but even if you do watch CNN, you're will not always "be the first to know" and I've had M&M's melt in my hand before melting in my mouth.    They're ads, they're meant to be catchy and relay the idea, that's why there is smallprint - so that there is a clear record of what exactly is meant.   Every movie that comes is being advertised with about 20 adjectives of which we're lucky if 1 turns out to be true.

Free to Play.  Can I play LoTRO for free?  Yes.  Forever? Yes.  All of it? No.  (I believe Monster play is still excluded from the F2P people).   Honestly, people who think that things just get given away, absolutely free with no strings attached, probably need a reality check anyway.  Plus, it's not like Turbine is hiding anything the pricing models are very clear and show exactly what you do and don't get.
