Cataclysm

Something came to my mind. I'm sure alot of people have played WoW in the past, and have played it ever since, but I've heard that many people are going to stop playing come Cata. I also heard ALOT of players just completely stopped when patch 4.0.1 was released. I started playing wow mid BC. So, why are so many people leaving? Is it because WoW isn't as great as it used to be in Vanilla and BC? I personally enjoyed patch 4.0.1, with the new talents and water engine and all, but not sure about Cata. Are there any things you guys hate about Cata?

I'm loving what Cata is bringing, although I wish there was more than just 5 levels being tacked onto endgame, but that's ok, by the time I see all the new content, GW2, Rift or STWOR will hopefully have launched and I'll play those.

I think people are griping because the game has changed so much and people tend to not like change due to fear or just just stubborness and don't want to take the time to adapt.

Biggest complaint I've seen from people is that they can't play their class like they used to. Which means basically, they were comfortable and now aren't and they don't want to adapt.

To me it's sad, who wants to be stuck doing the same stuff all the time. Although too much change too often can be a bad thing and I know Blizzard rides this thinline fairly often..so...who can say?

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the playerbase disappearing, the game is still a ton of fun and extremely popular no matter how many gripes you'll hear. A year from now they'll be complaining about something else.

Yeah, and the new classes look really nice. I'm also gonna be so happy when we can fly in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, althought I could see Blizzard questioning whether or not they should put flying in those places, because there would be no point to ground mounts besides for earlier levels.

I am going to give it a try. I played WoW for about 2 years straight starting 3 months after launch. Since then I play a month here and there. It seems with every year that goes by they make it easier and easier. I am hoping this expansion will bring back some challenge, but I am not holding my breath. What I am looking mostly forward to is not the 80 to 85 content, but the revamp of the level 1-60 content,  two new races, and the archeology profession. Heres hoping for the best.

Ahh true, all the more reason for alts! And I also quit WoW for a few months then come back, I'm on my third time right now, coming back when Cata is released :)

WoW has never been a grat MMO, just a well made and accessible game.

At the moment I am playing WoW because there is nothing better, so I don't really care if Cata is better or worse than Lich King, as soon as a "real" MMORPG comes out I will quit.

But to stay in topic, I feel like Cata will end up being a Dungeon grind (ala Battleground).

People will queue up for minutes waiting to start a dungeon or a battleground, and that's pretty much it.

In fact I am writing this post while I am queued to a random dungeon (7 minutes already).

I think that's what's wrong with Cata, but as I said, I never rated WoW as a great MMO so I don't care about Cata quality

Eh, well, my good friend told me. People who have been quitting (also my friends) have been telling me these things also. But I'm sure most everybody is excited for Cata, except the few who just don't like it because of all the new content.

Well WoW has a ever changing playerbase.I played for years.Havn't played since arround the Ulduar raid was in its prime. And don't lan on going back. With that said, alot may leave the game because of change. But at the same time I would be willing to bet Twice as many come back for a while because of the change. And ultimately the player base will remain steady. It is the Iron Giant of MMO's and probably will never fail til Blizzard decides to ull the lug.Which is not likely for a very long time.I wouldn't be surprised if WoW Doesn't keep evolving and Draws the masses for another ten years maybe even longer.

I stopped playing one year ago. WoW is a hub based dungeon game now.

New classes, that's a good one.

He's probably referring to the new races, or how some classes got a complete overhaul.

    yeah this is it.

They are making it even easier now..... and i dont know how this is possible since WoW is literally one of the easiest MMOs out there.

Well, they have mentioned a few tings.  They are cutting down dungeons into smaller pieces and some have parts just being completely cut out.

    MMEEEEEHHHHH!!!

Are they going to sunder the world at the release of the expansion on dec 7 or are they going to update the 1-60 zones earlier than that -- if so when?

Come on now, you know we won't find out till like the day before, but we do know that the shattering itself will happen "shortly" before Dec. 7th

I'm guessing the week of or before.

Like every WoW player i was waited for Cata with hope of something new & fresh.

Only today I started thinking nothing much of new will come, but just polished old vanilla. By the way I'm not fun of vanilla at all, to me it too *oldish*, I'm fast bored of grinds, may be can play such game for few hours if have nothing better to do.

Beside, Cata will not add much to explore, to discover, or even to get (items, skills & such) on my opinion. Somehow I hesitate to call it new game, new part or new contest.  Not sure why idea to colored old stuff is better then create new planet or add new continent (for example under water, in sky or something even more amazing).

Somehow I feel like I'll by something 2nd hand =D

What frustrate me the most is idea to remove all portals form Shattar & Dalaran and make us loose tons of game (payed) time by useless trips. I still being big fan of GW (shame nothing new added and game die slow) may be because of easy transportation system once you opened outpost. Portals can dramatically save your time! So i hoped with Cata better transportation system will come, but so far seems like all will end with more speed & old continents fly.

I think WoW is game for all tastes: you can customize your game style as you feel it: dungeons if you like party leveling, battlegrounds  and arenas for PvP oriented players, raids for high challenges, or explore, questing, skilling for solo guys.

Not sure Cata will add a lot to existing context.

Anyhow I'll take a try before buy Cata (already bought Aion by mistake, so never again =D) and see if it looks fun or just nothing much.

try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2

I like what I've read of the changes that they've mad and are making for Cata. I am unsubbed currently, but will be coming back for Cata

The level 1-60 area is a complete revamp. Even the quests have changed. Stormwind for instance is guarded by deathwing at the gates and the SW park almost completely destroyed with other parts of the city destroyed. Other areas I have seen in videos is Gadgetzan is now not so a desolate dry place. Its flooded and has life now. Pretty much all of azeroth has been rebuilt from ground up. As far as grind, I can tell you that is what keeps me out of the game now. Go kill 10 boar, get me 20 buzzard meat, blah blah blah...Most of that has been changed according to blizzard. They wanted more interesting quests. Sort of like they added into Wrath of Lich King. Something that has meaning and doesnt feel like you are someones errand boy. I guess we will see in a 3 weeks or so.

On the original post, please remeber that when you read these or other forums, you will get a lot of people that say and never do, as well as those that never have done and say they have.

To clarify, you will get a lot of people jumping on the band wagon of a few that whine about changes and say that they will give up the game if 'X' happens but never actually do. You will also get a lot of people saying that it was better back when 'y' and 'z' weren't in the game, but probably never experienced what it was actually like before 'y' and 'z' were actually in the game, you see?

On top of all that, there are also quite a few people that hang around forums who gave up playing as far back as when the first expansion came out but somehow are able to give 'valid' opinions about the latest changes even though they have never played them but a 'friend' has.

The upshot is that you can pretty much take most of the 'im leaving if they do that' sort of stuff with a pinch of salt for the most part, it's not that they are not telling the truth, but we all tend to say/type things in the heat of the moment that we never actually carry out once we have had some time to cool off and think about it.

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

I played wow since vanilla on and off until december 2009. So that means I'm almost a year clean :p .

It was mainly cause my guild was falling apart and because of the terrible community of wow. I had enough of all the dickjokes, your mom jokes and the chucknorris and 'anal' stuff in general chat. The only time general chat was fun was at night when it was kinda quiet on my server. Then you could come across mature people. Also the 'gearscore' thing is something I don't really like. It takes the fun away. But cata looks great. So maby I'll give it a try for let's say 2 months. I'm not sure. But I won't be there on release.

im just now starting back playing wow and loving every minute of it. the ground actually rumbles every now and then and i only just saw the cataclysm intro movie im supposed to see at the main menu in the cinematics but blizzard in their wisdom decided to not include those in the digital download and i had to get them from the forums and install them . My "cataclysm" option still only plays the lich king intro movie so i had to go to youtube and i was pissed i wanted to see it from the menu and i cant find the movie file anywhere to put in the directory. MOVIE IS BLEEPING AWESOME! I like what its doing for the game because im starting a new class "mage" and its only my 2nd character ever so its like a whole new game for me... Hopefully I can get 80 before cataclysm hits.

SOME areas have some major changes while other had little, it's not a total revamp. Wetllands just has Menethil sunk and there is an NElf camp where the Green Warden was in, Arathi just has a new UD camp on the entrance to Hillbrad, Duskwood is the same and just has NPC moved around, and there are more left relativley unchanged.

Dont blindly believe the propaganda cause once you get into Cata you might be in for a big surprise.

The cataclysm movie is not released in game because the sundering hasnt happened yet. The intro movie wont happen until the Cataclysm patch is turned on. Its downloaded in the background, but not activated.

This is what I like about WoW.

    1. If you want to level through questing, quest.

    2. If you want to level through battleground, battleground.

    3. If you want to level through random dungeons, don't forget your torch and 100 foot of rope.

    4. If you are bored, then work on fishing, cooking, first aid, and etcetra.

    5. If you want to join an arena team, than join one.

    6. If you want to be the leader of a social guild that runs naked through the streets...so be it.

and I could go on. But WoW has lots of great things for lots of different types of people.

Of course, those people that bemoan the passing of classic wow are really missing that wonderful axe, sword, or whatever that took X amount of quests, and just to get in that dungeon you had to jump through so many hoops...and then BC came out, and the precious whatever is worthless in one fell swoop. And the same will happen when Cata comes out.

I don't run dungeons or battlegrounds because I want X item. I do it for fun. I do it because I enjoy working with people to accomplish a goal. However, most importantly I find it fun.

    Currently Play: ?
Occasionally Play: Champions, Pirates of the Burning Sea, WOW, EVE ONLINE

    Hmm, propaganda huh? You missed a few things i think;

Apart from the six new zones, there is Ashenvale gets a volcano and faction shifts, Azshara completely revamped, Barrans completely split in two, Stonetalon mountain revamped and now an alliance/horde battle hub, Thousand needles completely flooded and revamped......

These are just a few of the things done in Kalimdor, eastern kingdoms has loads too and those areas that have not been massively changed physically have had faction shifts, camps moved about and paths made for better access to new or existing areas.

The idea as far as i understood it as a player was not to completely destroy the lands we already knew, but to make it a new experience even if you have been there 50 times before and from what i have seen so far Blizzard have met that brief very well.

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
