Turbine games question

komarrkomarr Member UncommonPosts: 214

Since Turbine has taken two of it's three MMO's F2P (LoTRO and DDO) while keeping Asheron's Call subscription only, what do you think it means in terms of Turbine's commitment to each game?  Also how do you think Turbine views each game at this point in their respective life cycles?  Does it mean Turbine is more satisfied with AC then the other two ( as far as their expectations for each game)?  Or do they simply not see AC as viable for conversion to F2P?

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

At some point it becomes better alternative to create a new game than to keep old one updated. I think AC1 is past that point. They keep the game online, provide some support and updates, but it's not worth making any as big changes as P2P -> F2P conversion would be.

They've stated the cost, and therefore returns, of reprogramming Asheron's Call to make it 'free to play' wouldn't be worth it to them or the customers. Not in so many words but that's the gist of it.

It's a pity really, if they gave that game a graphics update to "not sucking" it would do pretty well. Those graphics make baby jesus cry today... and even when it launched they made him whimper.

I think it's safe to say AC's days are numbered.  Just seems to me they don't think it is worth the investment.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Since changing the business model over for both of these, players have seen alot more updates, adv packs etc....  They seem to be making enough money off of them that they want to keep putting out new stuff.

Couple of cash cows.  The games lent themselves well to beening broken up into manageable (& sellable) chunks.  I think as long as they see the revenue come in, they'll do them darndest to keeping them up to date.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
