I agree with the original poster. Since I have played online games from when I I beta tested the very first one, I have been losing any intresst in prerelease video or info. How many let downs does it take to create skepticism ? I still pop on here with the faintest hope that maybe a good online game might someday be invented.
Untill then, game till you bleed.
Old dude
HaHa on me also.. I read quite a bit about this game.. then let it drop for awhile, due to no new news.
THEN.. as I was cruising around on Gamestop trying to fix my game habits, I saw the GW2 pre-order. Went there.. Lo & Behold - Gamestop had it listed as:
Guild Wars 2.... (in red) - Preorder Ships 11/02/2010!! OMG! I was so excited I almost did something messy in the panties!
This was back on 10/12 btw .. Out comes the credit card.. WIZZ - BANG - PREORDER'd!!
Then as I was printing this confirmation up, I thought - WAIT!!! WHAT?? LOL ON ME!!!
Got So mad on this order, I emailed Gamestop and let them know what I thought of this lil hype here to my heart strings!
Sooooo, this here preorder'd piece of paper will probably be "yellow" by the time I can go pick this game up at my local GS!!
*cries"!!!
It's a good thing I HAVE a sense of humor!! Eh!!?? God, how tired was I the day of 10/12? LOL!!
Yet if a new trailer came out, everyone thinks it's game footage
I really don't care about what the OP has to say but one sentence caught my eye. The funny thing with this statement is that every single trailer that Arena Net has released, contain concept art and footage straight from the game itself (not CGI). Just look at the Teaser Trailer, the Races Trailer and everyone's favourite the Manifesto Trailer. Then go compare it to some actual gameplay and see how wrong that statement is.
A lot of people have no idea about the specifics of the game and there is a great deal of compiled information on this forum for people that are interested. I come here because I've seen links to several things I wouldn't normally be bothered to go hunt down myself like the recent pvp interview.
As for the OP if you really think the game is 3 or more years off from release I'd be willing to bet you it will be released before then. My guess is late 2011 or early 2012. We'll know more when they start talking about beta. Until then I eagerly anticipate further information about the game and enjoy the opportunity to discuss it with others. If you don't share that desire I recommend you either leave or get off your soap box.
Investors like seeing people interested in multiplying their capital.
Programmers and designers like treading the water to see if what they're doing is worthwhile.
They've been working on the game for obviously a long time, and a little recognition and early feedback while the stuff is still malleable is very important.
The ArenaNet employees don't roll in to the 7-11 you work at and tell you how to make hotdogs and toquitos rotate under glass or how to fill the slurpee machines; so buzz off.
This will not be a " totally free of extra charges game". Take a look at Guild Wars currently in the NC Store. If you want everything the game has to offer, there will be extra charges. I look for them to offer an even wider variety of optional extras as Guild Wars 2 goes forward.
That's not to say I'm not looking forward to it. I'm just fully aware that it won't be "free" in anything but the most basic sense.

Yeah but they really haven't gone into specifices about what they will be puting in the cash shop, but we will finf out as the release date draws near.
You're telling people predicting a release in 2011/2012 that they are way off, but offer no proof or rational argument to support that. Can you see where you went wrong with your topic?
I only went wrong with the Flux Capacitor part
Actually I think you went wrong by whining about stuff you have no control over. It will release when it is released and not a moment before. Worrying about when they will release it is an exercise in futility. Worrying about what other people consider valid representations of what a game will be is another exercise in futility. Coming here and posting about how upset you are about all that is yet another. Find an old game to play until a new game comes out. Accept that since you are already frustrated the new game will not live up to your expectations. That's my advice and opinion on the matter.
You can get a flux capacitor at best buy, after hours.
1. "Video game trailers are silly...Remember Warhammer ?...They had one of the best Game trailers of any MMO."
GW2 has no pre-rendered trailers at this time; they're all gameplay, cinematic, or concept art.
2. "Guild Wars 2 had been announced well over a year ago, and to this day a release date seems not even close."
Yes it was announced well over a year ago. To be specific it was announced in 2007 (almost FOUR years ago), so actually... a release date is expected within the next year or so, which is pretty soon relative to how long the game has already been in the works. The amount of gameplay and demo content suggests that Guild Wars 2 is at least somewhat into the alpha stage of development.
3. "I personally find it ridiculous to spend as much time as others, studying something that is so far off."
Stop posting in this forum if you find it ridiculous. Updates are given almost weekly by ArenaNet, so it's not like the posters here are merely talking about "nothing yet". GuildWars2Guru has more meaningful topics if you would rather chat on those forums... but either way it's fun to speculate on a game you're excited about!
Guild Wars 2 was actually publicly announced in 2007, as the reason why there wouldn't be any more campaigns for Guild Wars (one). But ArenaNet barely said anything about it until this April. Talking about a lot of game mechanics in depth and showing playable demos at conferences sure seems to me like it's a lot closer to release than when it was basically, yes we're working on Guild Wars 2, and no we won't tell you about the game mechanics of it.
Page, listen look at the mmos coming out. Gw2 has a ton of real live game video out. I mean did you just wake up and decide to troll. Or was it too hard to go to youtube/this site's gw2 forums/ other gamign site's forums and just look at videos. I personally have seen: 100+ stand on top of each other w/o lag , then a ton of lag when they all started spamming spells ; their boss/questing system with 60+ people w/o lag; multiple classes and their abilities; swaping weaposn and abilities; multiple quests/ encounters; tons of different apprences of characters; and overall a decent about of game play. Its true the GW2 is rather young, but its showing more than the other mmorpgs to be released atm and looking better while doing it.
So there is your reason for hype. They have their core game systems working.
"Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one ..." - Thomas Paine
Some of YOU people lol (sorry couldn't help it) are a little ultra sensitive. Let's be real, this site is so pro gw2 so early in the game that I get where he is coming from. He is quite right about other games equally hyped (aoc, warhammer, aion, star trek etc) that did not come close to the expectations at release that the marketers led people to believe. That is why my motto continues to be cautiously optimistic until I try open beta. I hope this game succeeds because we really need a fresh mmo, but him stating his concerns based on previous hyped games is quite justified. I mean, he started his post with support for the game and you still jumped all over is valid opinion. Shame on you all people lol.
Anyway, several of you are right about the actual gameplay videos that are out there which won me over, especially with the artwork and dynamic event POTENTIAL. I would recommend that he checks out YouTube pax and gamescom videos which are far more then trailers.
I still do my nightly prayers that this and swtor have me addicted to online games again for years to come. :-)
Marketing tricks are needed far too much these days, i cant think of a game that succeded without using a single marketing trick...
Its a way to build up hype yes, but it doesnt mean marketing=bad game even though its highly possible since most companies these days focus on marketing for release date sales instead of long term sales. But the devs in arenanet seem to have a lot of interesting ideas about gameplay which are against the typical marketing gameplay and try to create something really new and interesting.
That reason is enough for me to want to try the game
First off, we have two gameplay trailers. Three if you count the "extra" one. That versus at least a hundred gameplay videos. With those videos are claims from plenty of sources that say the game is great. For every decent gaming site you pull up that hates the game, I can pull up 20 that like it. Obviously one should not buy a game based only on reviews... but I would much rather try a game with good reviews than one with bad reviews. (Though reviews are not always accurate.)
Secondly, this is what hype is for. You are claiming we should not be talking about a game with no release date? We should look into it because it has no release date? That is just stupid. Half the games in development should be removed from forums then...
GW2 has more gameplay videos than SW:ToR, Rift and Tera. And in the lastest conference call for NCSoft shareholders, GW2 is expected within the next year.
Rather than focusing on hype (which is inevitable with any upcoming game atm that even looks like it MIGHT be good), i would look more at where the hype has previously fallen short. How much of the hype on previous games has actually survived players playing the game? That seem to be the point where the hype is seperated from what the game actually is.
Alot of people have actually played GW2, and yet the hype continues. You would think that would tell us something. It's a point that everyone complaining about the hype and the OP seem to be missing. The hype was generated by arenanet talking up there game (to be expected). Now the hype is being generated by those who have already been given the chance to play it.

Pretty much every game except FFXIV and Mortal Online. Oh wait, you are not talking about a beta are you? You are talking about a mere demo at conferences which includes "character creation + a little gameplay", yeah even FFXIV survived this (in fact it looked amazing as said by journalists and players who tried it).

Wasn't FFXIV and Mortal Online games that had beta phase pushed back because "it wasn't ready yet". That gave me the first clue.
Both in WAR and AoC, beta players were warning people about the state of the game before launch.
There are signs, you just have to notice them.
I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been-Wayne Gretzky
Regardless of the state of the game development I think the solution here is really quite simple. If you don't want to participate in the discussion of what we know or think will happen on an unfinished product in a forum dedicated to said unfinished product then GTFO.

There are no signs *before* a beta, which is what the other guy was implying.
I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2. If NCSoft pulls off what I think they will with a totally free of extra charges game, it may change the entire market for ever. I also think that they will revamp everything that GW 1 did wrong, and make it better. So as you can see I'm excited about this game also.
HOWEVER :
Guild Wars 2 had been announced well over a year ago, and to this day a release date seems not even close. Don't you see that it's a marketing trick to build hype....Nothing more !.......It's no more than GM announcing that they are building personal space ships. After all it would only take GM to build a simple Flux Capacitor that does not work to solve the legal issues involved with early advertisement.
Video game trailers are silly.......They have close to nothing to do with the actual game play. Remember Warhammer ?...They had one of the best Game trailers of any MMO. Yet, look what game play turned out to be. I've witnesses others here on mmorpg.com think that Video game trailers, and cartoon oil paintings depict the actual graphics of what a game will be like.
Some even go as far to say " I'm glad they are not releasing an mmo yet, it will insure a more full, bug free game ". I don't understand this logic either. You have no clue at what the stage of development a game is in. It could be three years, and not even have NPC's in yet !
I need a new mmo bad, just like you. And to each their own, everyone is different, but I personally find it ridiculous to spend as much time as others, studying something that is so far off. I pop my head into the GW2 fourms about once a week only to find " nothing yet ". But post after post of excitement.
Well like I say to each their own !
No one person can control the patience level of another so in that regard it's too bad for you that you take this stance. Luckily for me I don't over value neither video game experience or mmorpg's so if there is nothing out that I want to play I'll do something else altogether but I think this is a good practice to follow for all devs release the game when it is ready, regardless of published release dates or how long it actually takes to get it out if it's good people will play it.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
If the OP had any clue about how ArenaNet works he would realize that ArenaNet does not have a history of doing open betas. For the closed Alpha & Beta testing they use something they call their Friends and Family program. When GW2 was first announced they did say that a few GW players MAY get the chance to participate in the beta process. I keep hoping to be invited to take part in the beta but so far, nothing. I know several people that were in the beta for GW, so far none of them are part of the GW2 beta.
The OP has demonstrated an almost complete lack of knowledge about GW2 and what materials are currently available concerning the game. According to NCSofts’ quarterly reports GW2 should be on store shelves sometime in 2011. Will they make it, don’t know, but I am hoping.

"Huntress"
players themselves build the hype more so than the developers.
swtor shows nothing new, other games dont stand out... gw2 devs throw a tiny bit of info and there.... guild wars 2 top1.
its like throwing a small piece of meat to the sharks.
its really other devs fault - if they cant throw in something more original - they will be easily ignored.

Currently bored with MMO's.
