MMORPG gamers in the news.

I just wanted to thank everybody in these forums who helped me with my cover story in this week's Velocity in Louisville, KY. It's a weekly with about 150,000 readers so this is probably a good thing for the MMORPG community.

I'm especially thankful given some of the names I was called here for trying to find sources.

Thanks again to those who helped, one of whom is mentioned in the story.

Happy hunting.

Ps: I did not originally call Dungeons & Dragons a "role playing board game," that was edited in.

Cool article. Sad about the kid with cancer though :( Especially if you are good friends with him online and will never know what really happened.

There have been a lot of articles written about gamers, their lives and/or outcomes of gaming. It seems a majority of those articles concentrate on parts of the genre that society usually deems to be bad. Those artilces tend to focus on the virtual violence, their addictiveness, or the possibly negative social habits that arise from playing computer games.

These articles tend to not acknowledge that those same outcomes are just as likely to occur within a society from almost the very beginning. These articles ignore the violence within literature and graphic stories (cartoons, comics, graphic novels), games, and sports. These articles concentrate on the people who become addicted, to a negative outcome, while ignoring the likelihood of those individuals becoming addicted to anything.

I have played computer games since about 1978. I am still here moving through society as best I can. I have /never/ been involved in a fight.

I am somewhat reclusive but that is my personality. It is not the consequence of computer gaming. Actually it's just the reverse. I play games in part because I am somewhat reclusive.

Computer games are a strong habit for me. But if they did not exist I would go back to reading 3 - 4 books a week instead of one book every two weeks. I still read more than 80% of the population reads.

Most of the articles written about computer gaming and gamers tend to put a negative view on our part of society. Because of this we have become somewhat of a private club. Because of this we look upon curious reporters as vultures and not the "bards of yore' that we often play as. To many of us reporters are griefers not paladins. A griefer is someone who plays a game intending to cause other players grief, anger, unhappiness and all the other things gaming is not about.

You have written a neutral article about real people who game. That is very good. But many more reporters will need to find something newsworthy and positive in our games before we can begin to welcome them to our club.

You've taken a good first step. Now let's see if you can get other reporters interested in gaming and the average people who play them. As opposed to those reporters only interested in fanning the fires of the dislike and distrust of those of us who PLAY GAMES!

We gamers are lookng for acceptance just as much as everyone else who exists within a society. Thank you for accepting us as people and not as trolls.

Well, this outsider reporter has a retired level 65 Paladin with 20 AAs on Vazaelle (Brarris) in EQ Live, 2 retired characters with 2 million+ SP on EVE Online, and a level 28 Armorer / 27 Guardian (Brarris) on Befallen in EQ II. My first computer RPG was Pool of Radiance on the Commodore 64.

So don't I get to be in the club?

    Just yanking your chain.

Being a professional and a gamer is kind of funny at times. One of my best friends is an ultra-conservative hospital executive and he scowls at all this.

Funny story: About five months ago, I was playing BF:V when the former governor of Kentucky called me at home (I'm a freelancer, work at home). I had the sound thumping on the stereo when I picked up the phone, so there's helicopter noise and explosions everywhere and I say 'Just a second governor while I close out what I'm working on here and pull up your file.' =P
