Well, old gamers should know about this story.. around 2007 there were ALOT of rumors speculating Blizzard was working on MMORPG called World of Starcraft.
You can read an article about this here:
http://wow.joystiq.com/2007/05/05/world-of-starcraft-information-leaked/
That was either a hoax, or a terrible misinformation. However, i'm still 100% sure that blizzard has MMO plans for starcraft in the future.
The point of this thread is to discuss and exchange oppinion about your point of view of an upcoming Stracraft MMORPG.
Do you think it will be a great MMORPG, considering Starcraft storyline? Do you think they will ruin it?
Personally I believe a Starcraft MMORPG could be either a DISASTER, or a tottaly EPIC release that I could end up playing for years. Thats why i believe Blizzard has hesitated to release a MMORPG titlte based on Starcraft. Transfering the world , lore, and epicness of Starcraft into a MMORPG is not an easy task..
Well thats about it for now, i d like to hear what everyone else thinks about this.
I 've included a vote to see where the crowd goes
EDIT: Just to clarify.. I never stated anywhere that Blizzard has a Starcraft MMORPG on the works. I barely stated a hoax or a misinformation that happened 3 years ago.
You guys wondering how World of Starcraft COULD be , check the videos below.
This was a game developed and cancelled by blizard.
Thats almost like a taste of a Starcraft MMORPG...
Keep in mind that this game was developed several years ago

The question is how? How would they make it? But if anyone could it would be blizzard. And yes I would definitely play it.
Veritas Vos Liberabit- The truth will set you free.
Yes more mmorpg on the market to pick from the better. problem is, I do not believe a starcraft mmo could be very much successful.
why?
Aiming combat is a small group in the MMORPG genre.
also Sci Fi is also another small group in the rpg and mmorpg genre.

It'll be a WAR40k clone.
So sweet. I can finally say that now.
I tottaly agree with that, but remember we're talking about starcraft. I think they just wont risk it, just like most of the companies out there. Don't forget that EVE is around so many years and its still one of the top MMOs out there. Fallen earth drawn some attention as well. However i believe they could make it in a way people are going to play it, removing negative assets such as aiming combat
I really dont see them making good starcraft MMO. Or maybe I do? Lol. But it would be totally different from WoW, as it SHOULD be mostly PvP imo. PvE Starcraft MMO just sounds wrong.
look at poll after poll after poll, sci fi is what gamers want most next to fantasy
Blizz has already stated that they are NOT doing a SC MMO. The one in the works is something completely new and will resemble something closer to Global Agenda or WH40k. I honestly can't believe people still think this is coming...
NEWS FLASH! PAYING THE SUB IN F2P = NO DIFFERENCE THAN P2P GAMES!
Why the hell can't the whiners comprehend this?
Noone said it's on the works mate. We're just guessing sometime in the DISTANT future they ARE going to benefit from the glory of Starcraft by making the most poppular game gerne at the time.. A MMORPG
I think it would be awesome, and it would do amazingly well... and it will NEVER happen.
I think it will eventually.. we re just gonna be much older :-P
By the way guys... Have you ever seen Starcraft ghost? It was a game they were developing but was cancelled...
Thats almost like a taste of a Starcraft MMORPG...
Keep in mind that that game was developed several years before...
Love this vid as well
^_^
POLLS?? POLLS???
I know damn well you not putting a Poll on a forum like this, over STATS.....
edit: sorry if that came out harsh. Trying to catch the train
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Heh, I always thought SC was a 40k clone. I can easily imagine I am not the only one who sees Terran, Protoss and Zerg as Space Marines, Eldar and Tyranids.
Oh yeah, a WoW style SC game in MMO form. Gonna be WoW, with guns. The one true WoW killer!!!1!1!!11
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?
A SC MMO would be absolutely epic... I would definetely play.
There are many fundamental aspects of RTSs that exist throughout many games. It is easy to see similarities between RTSs because most are very similar. The reason for this is because someone found a formula that wokred well.
These similarities are not just prevalent in RTSs, but in all video games. I think the term that best applies here: if it is not broke, do not fix it. Would you rather create a rehash that has a higher probability of success or spend a decent amount of money trying to create something unique? Most video game designers tend to take a very conservative road when it comes to IP development.
Warhammer and Starcraft both pull from previous literary works, as does anything sci fi related.
One could also say that they are both similar because they both take influence from the same things. Starship Troopers, Alien, and Predator among them.
You know there are already people out there calling WH40K:DM a WoS clone.
Still though, SC:Ghost dies... rumors about Blizzard's next MMO being a shooter'ish kind of game (the rumors oddly match what turned out to be APB, but still)... World of Starcraft: Ghost.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Explorer: 87%, Killer: 67%, Achiever: 27%, Socializer: 20%
MUG F***ing DAMN!!!!!
this is like Planetside 3.5 or something.....
Blizzard wtf were you thinking when you cancled this? were you high? what?
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Too niche: so no.
Jeff Kaplan said the new MMO would include all kinds of gameplay ("all things you can think off and then add some").
And Bobby Kotick confirmed it would be far more casual that the tradtional WoW. And if a man who never even held a joystick in his hands makes such a statement, you can bet it will NOT be a pure SF based space game.
And I don't think it will be a shooter either.
Women and older people (other target audiances) are not playing shooters or SF games.
My guess is a kind of MMO with different worlds addressing different kinds of players (perhaps even planet systems with each planet having different themes and playing styles and achievements).
One thing is sure: content will have to be huge and diverse and address hardcore on line play as well as very casual elements (mini games).
Probably the main driving force will be achievements and bragging goals (no longer purely gear driven).
IF they would do it and that's a big IF, it would have to be a true MMORPFPS with vehicles, aiming and all that FPS stuff and yet the costomization and progression of a MMORPG. 3-way open world PvP would be a must and sounds like something... different. I could see it working I guess.
If they did it would have to be primarily a PVP game. But it would be awesome, if they did it right, of course.
However a part of me wants them to keep the Starcraft franchise in the realm of RTS.
Universe of Starcraft wouldn't exist for a while considering they're still hard at work on Starcraft II games dealing with the different races.
2011 is #2 Heart of the Swarm
I have been a big fan of starcraft since the 90's , so World of Starcraft game, or universe whatever, would be pretty awesome. I would play it over WoW anyday. I would be a protoss.. that was always my favorite race.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
Where is the link stating it will be asomething closer to Global Agenda or WH40K ?
Personally, I would think it would end up being a terrible idea in the end. On an RPG level, I don't see what Starcraft really has to bring when the setting is really about massive amounts of units going into a headlong collision to save/destroy the universe. There aren't so many heroes in the game as opposed to let's say Warcraft, so 5-10 man dungeons will not make too much sense. It would have to lose some flavor of Starcraft to be able to have an MMO that can cater to the individual a bit more unless everyone really does like playing the grunt of a 100 unit army, MMO's aren't known to function well that way.
Even if Blizzard does even make an attempt at it, I cannot see them doing anything drastically different or special that WoW isn't/hasn't been doing. Just look at how much Diablo has/hasn't changed from Diablo 2 to 3. Albeit the difference is one is a direct sequel, but tell me one thing that Blizzard was willing to innovate on its own without taking from some other company that did it first.
