what if they only allowed one race to be played by your account?
it sure would be interesting
Why would they want to sabotage their own game right out of the gate like that? "We put in a bunch of content, but we won't let you see it. Ever."
-----
I think they should offer a package deal on character slots: for a one time fee of $100 or so, you get unlimited character slots. Or a hundred, if unlimited is too hard to do.
A lot of games don't offer enough character slots. Without a monthly fee, I'm fine with them charging for character slots. But they should at least have the option to buy more available right from the start.
Yes, I'm ignoring the precise question in the title of this thread.

I realize its a design choice that would ultimately limit the experience of the character...but isn't that the issue that this thread was created to discuss?
I mainly wanted to propose the idea because its a unique take on the issue.
edit: Im not really well aware of how the content is divided... is it primarily based around your race or class?
i agree with post above. 6 should be good, 5 stories, and 1 experimental (somtimes people don't want to delete their first charater or want a specefic character after experiencing all the stories/gameplay)
I'm gonna say 4 because I'm not alt type of player and 4 is enough for anet to make some extra money and sounds reasonable... 6 is more for the p2p style, keep in mind b2p needs to make some extra money......
But the main thing i'm posting this is that there was no reason to create a thread like this without a poll. poll would allow you to quickly see what people think to avoid skimming through the whole thread.... you should of just started with 1,2,3 and went to 8 and created another one saying 10+ for those insane alt players who must have every possible race/class combo which will never happen even if you buy all character slots lol... they just won't create that many
I have always liked the idea of 2 Character slots.
Then you get 1 free character slot every time one of your characters reaches the level Cap.
This would be unlimited as long as you keep getting characters up to the level Cap..
Each character could only get this bonus once though. If the level cap was 50 and you get to 50, you get a free slot. If they raise the cap to 60....you do not get a cap with that character for hitting 60 since you alraedy got it at 50.. But any new characters that have not reached the level cap will now have to hit 60 to get the Slot, instead of 50.
I hope one for each race. They could also go with 8 as they have talked a lot about replayablility. But they would also like to sell more slots in their shop i think.
One for each profession would be too much imo, I had 8 slots in GW1 and I felt it was too much, remember that they will need to profit over character slots

I'm that kind of player who only concentrates on 1 character and tries to max it / get all extras and so on. To me, 1 slot would be enough, lol. I have 2 characthers in GW and only 1 of them beat all campaigns and unlocked many stuff. I don't like starting over and I have a life so usually don't have time and patience to make more characters. =/
Fair to who? The player? 8 slots. I mean, if its just for the player we are talking about then the more the better correct?
IF we are talking about whats best for the developers though? 3-4. Why? Because you create limits in which you can expand upon through expansion packs. IN other words, you create the need and or demand for more space, and then offer just that with an expansion pack in which people will feel they must purchase.
This isnt wrong considering the business model is sub fee free, but at the same time its not solely for the players best interest.
I'd say 5 character slots is a fair number. Gives people a chance to have one character, of every playable race (5 unique personal story questlines). It also allows ArenaNet to make some money, from selling character slot to those who want at least 1 of every Profession.
Make him, love him, care for him, enjoy him, spend all your time with him!
I don't care for alts named "KissMeHeiny" or "Jim3094" or the likes

I'll change my mind and join you on that one.
Do not forget that each race has multiple storylines! I know that humans have a commoner, aristocrat and underclass/street biography choices which affect your home and initial friends!
I still like the idea of six character slots, though I generally have one character that I play with few to no alts. I can just understand the need to try out other stories.
There are 8 professions so I would say a good number would be 5, 6 tops.
And who the hell will try all the race/profession combinations. Your gameplay won't be much different. It's the profession that matters and not your race. And bout the background, I would assume this would only affect your gameplay during the first few hours. So you can use 1 char slot to try different combinations and delete the char if you are that intent on seeing all the options.

Tell that to the GW1 people who have multiples of one class just for the fun of it. Tell that to my friend who has somewhere around 20 character slots. Tell that to the alt-aholics who PLAN on having as many race/class combinations as possible because even if gameplay isn't all that different the personal story is very different.
To the guy who said 1 slot is enough...0/10
EDIT: 4-6 is good

When you pay for the client you get 1 slot after 30 days that slot goes to zero unless you pay an upkeep of 9.99 a month. Once you pay this upkeep you have unlimited character slots. Lol that's how you keep the free loaders out... Ninja in a p2p method lol.
I beleive it was 4 charactor slots when guild wars first came out, but considering the amount of content difference between guild wars prophecies when it originaly shipped and what guild wars 2 will have (8 proffesions, 5 playable races) the minimum they would give it 5; like a previous poster said 5 races so it gives you the chance to play all 5 and try out 5 of the professions.
If they wherent planning to make a lot of money off of charactor slots then I expect 8 would be their starting number.
Since they have yet to really talk about this in any interviews Its really anyones guess 4-8 seems to be the range, from most profitable to least, I can see Anet taking a nice spot in the middle-ish area.

Four minimum, six would be good. No need for them to provide eight they need to make cash so let them make at least some from character slots.

5 races
8 classes
1 PVP build and one PVE build for each
5x8x2=80.... plus a couple more for experiments.
How bout they give us 100?
Seriously though, 8 would be best.
8+ wooot
6-8 nice
4-5 can work with
1-3 lolwut?

I would like to support them and one of the ways would be to buy the extra slots so if they gave only a few like 4 I would not be upset.
