I'm sure you've all heard how Blizzard has halved the prices on WOW, WOW: BC, and WOW:LK.
Well, today, Gamestop went one step further and is now GIVING AWAY the basic (Vannila) WOW, and selling the others for less, as well.
Well, technically, you buy the game from them for 4.99 (online AND offline) and get a 5 dollar gift card, free of charge. They're literally giving you more in store credit than the amount you give them...by a penny.

Just thought I'd point that out to any of you who are looking into buying it for friends, family, or self.
Sadly, the battlechest and wrath / cata have no such freebie.
They have had their prices on the battlechest lowered even lower than Blizzard's, though.

Wrath and Cata prices remained untouched by Gamestop.
Just thought I'd point it out if noone else has yet.

Sorry see thats how it works folks.

Gamestop isn't spending any more money on the prequels than anyone else, and you'll go back to spend those $5 game cards. You can't get anything with $5, so you'll end up spending $20 or more. They're not stupid those guys. They're keeping (and expanding) brick and mortar stores in an age when games are becoming easily downloaded by many people. More power to them. They employ a bunch of college students. :-)
Edit: I meant Gamestop must have gotten a deal on the prequels so that they could sell them for $5 each.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
If you put both expanions together, the Battle Chest only wins by a penny as well, big whoop. The thing thats bugging me about WoW's pricing atm is how Blizzard are charging the Americans alot less than the people here in the UK. Basically what you guys get is $5, we get £4, let me assure you $5 does not equal £4, its less, by at least 60p, Then there's Lich King for $10, we pay £8, again, $10 is not £8, its more than a pound below. Now I know what ya thinking, but its just a quid here and there right? well I think most Brits would prefer around £13 vs £16 for the whole bundle, save that £3 and put it toward Cataclysm or perhaps some game time! Sure might not seem like much but every little counts. Whats worse is it seems to me like EU servers are dead? I donno if thats just me, I hardly see anyone on and I spend alot of time on the game, pretty much all afternoon, evening, until early hours of the morning. Oh and before ya say "So why whine about it when ya can just get the US one cheaper?" well one of my problems is I've been leveling my druid and hunter up so I can get access to DK, I am 3 levels away! Fortunately I haven't bought Lich King, yet, I got free trial, but I really don't wanna spend all that time getting to 55 again when thats what normally puts me off a game anyway. Sure things may have changed a little in WoW, maybe leveling again might be a new experiance, but I don't plan to roll a new character until Cataclysm when I claim my first worgen, til then I don't wish to start over :-/ Anyways, either way imo we Brits got screwed, I don't see how its fair to have countries do diferent pricing like that. For those of you who are new to the game, enjoy ya cheapest version possibly ever for World of Warcraft.
I supposed they could constantly adjust for the value differences between the dollar and the pound (or the Euro), but they probably just get it close and let it go. The three or four pounds difference isn't much in comparison to your monthly subscription. In any event, it's still less than $19 or $29, etc. that the price has been.
I don't know too much about the VAT fees, but is there a VAT fee on downloaded content? i.e. The Warchest really is 13 pounds, but the VAT puts it at 16 pounds.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Everything costs more in Europe. You should be used to it by now. WoW costing more in Europe shouldn't be a big suprise. Its most likely due to tariffs and taxes. Hell, here in Canada things cost more than they do in the US, and we're right next door to them.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
The "saving money" is relative.
If they're overcharging for a product or service to begin with, meaning they're making a ridiculous profit margin on it, putting said product or service "on sale" does not "save" consumers any money.
Isn't it time that they did like EQ2 and include all the earlier expansions with the Xpac?
I think they would earn money in the long way if they did that, it is monthly fees that is the main earnings anyways and if just a few more tries it they earn money on it.
I think it is kinda a turnoff to be forced to buy a huge pack or a bunch of boxes, and it wouldn't hurt to get in some new players.
When you are talking about luxury items like video games, the concepts of 'overcharging' and 'saving money' are fairly meaningless. If you really want to save money, you just do not buy the product.
All that's happening here is that people can get a product that they want for less money then they had to spend previously.
In My World It's Kill Or Be Killed
I agree with you 100%, but at the same time as long as wow is month after month on the top ten best selling pc titles there is little incentive to cut a box out of the product line.
If it was a big turn off people wouldn't buy it. It won't last forever and maybe this price cut is the start of that.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
you sure you want to stick to this line of thought?
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
Ok so if someone wanted to buy WoW from scratch with Cata, what would the total pricetag be? Do you actually need BC and WotLK, since supposedely you can level all through Azeroth now?

This would be a good idea, but Blizzard has a captive audience, and ofc some sucker will undoubtedly buy the other games either to box with or for friends and family, so thats yet more income back into Blizzards coffers.
Other than that I'm the same as you, I prefer expacs to come bundled together with new releases rather than having to keep buying them all seperately, it must surely cost them more to carry on doing it the way they are than following SoE's example.
The promotion is still going on. Seems like $20 for xpacs and $30 for Cata. If that comes with a free month, it seems decent, although I would like to see the prices around $35 before finding it attractive. I'm thinking of getting it for the family, since they are quite simple when it comes to MMORPGs but are getting more and more into computer gaming.
Blizzard needs to just lump it all up into one set of discs and slap a low price on it.

60 bucks tops, or less if you shop around.
WoW may be more expensive but everything for Guild Wars is cheaper in Britain! I just payed less than a fiver for the Eyes of the North Expansion from the British Amazon when it would cost me more in the U.S.! So, not everything is more expensive! I have a North American account for WoW but I am not sure if I will resubscribe for Cataclysm. It sounds interesting but WoW will always be there when I am back in the U.S., but I do agree that things are more expensive in Britain in general. Of course the state that I am from in the U.S. has a really low cost of living any way so I am biased to the differences in many ways!
I am sorry that things are more expensive but I imagine that trading tariffs with the U.S. may be part of the reason for the increased pricing! I am not an economist though!
M
and yet our dollar has been almost equal in value for awhile, only a few cents difference at one point, but yet the cost difference of things when compared to US vs Can never changed, go figure.
higher import duty fees and taxes by Canada. It costs more to get the product *into* Canada. The retailers pay a higher price. Thus the consumer pays a higher price. And this is before the absurd 15% sales tax. I save about 33% on items if I drive down to buy them in the U.S.
Just beware of the Battle.net store. I placed an order for boxed versions of the BC + WotLK a week ago, and the order is still being 'processed'. So it looks for sure like I'm going to miss the first few days - at least - of Cata. And UPS Ground is not exactly quick either...
