As much as i enjoy playing MMO. I prefer spending thanksgiving and other holidays with family and friends. The day i start spending all my holidays in virtual world i will check myself in for psychiatric help.
i like these times in games its really a time to relax abit and maybe get to know the communty abit better as everyonre is in a good mood so to speak lol AO was and still is the best MMO i ever played long live AO !!!!!!
I have to admit, I have more friends online than i do irl. Maybe it's because the ones I meet online aren't trying to dress just right and know just the right people and fit in with the Cool crowd. The ones I have met do come up for LAN parties at my house in the boonies (we discovered that we are a lot less focused when we are all together vs when we are at our respective houses). Don't get me wrong, I spend time with my family, and the in-laws, as well as teach my daughter to ride, and train my horses, but I also make it a point to do the holiday parties in my chosen game, AO. I enjoy putting on party clothes and heading to our new club, The Grind, and raising the roof, while participating in vicinity contests, as well as the ones on GSP. I have tried other games, and though i do have them on my puter, and I log in occationally, I miss the interaction and general horseplay I get when I log on to one of the chatbots and one of my friends makes one of his comments, or watching ooc, and seeing that off the wall statement that results in a conversation about something in left field with someone you've never met. Or grabbing a noob and showing them how to get past something that has them stumped. The other games just don't seem as friendly, unless you come on knowing someone. There's something wrong with that scenario.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, and may your holidays be joyous.
In ten years, I predict that players won't even need to login to play. THey create and account, pay a fee and come back weekly to check on it's progress. Hmm... did I just birth the next generation mmo?

BRB, I need to write that down
Too late, it's already starting to happen. I think some of AeriaGames now offers Bots in the Cash Shop who will grind for you. And there's that Jade Dynasty game I think that has a built-in bot system that everyone can use while away from the computer, etc.

Spend the holidays with people that matter. Some people the only firnds they have are online, so thats where they belong I guess. If you play MMO and don't have anyone in the whole wide world to spend the time with - then I guess online friends are your best people to spend that time with. But if you do have people who even slightly care about you or YOU care at least a tiny bit about them - get on the phone and get together at least for Christmas.
Its a good time to renew relationships and decide again what is important in your life. Online friends from MMOs they are there one day and another day they are not there any more. Real Life friends and relatives no matter how bad relationships can be - they still can be made better - if YOU wish so.
I've noticed that a lot of people prefer online friends these days to a real people. Well, I just wish you all great and happy holidays. Don't forget what Christmas is really about though. Peace!
you can't really cry about people playing the game differently than you do. everybody has a different reason for playing the game. you have yours. i have mine. i paid for the game i can play it any way i want to. just cause i do it differently than you doesn't make my way the wrong way.
You're thinking too hard. Holidays aren't for getting together with people. They're for getting together with people that matter. Your mmo guildees and friends may seem like the best of buddies with you, but when it gets down to it you still need to turn them off and spend real time with your family, your kids, and some of your friends which probably haven't seen you in a long time.
So this doesn't really strike me as something to be irked about. Maybe I'm just the only one who still sees these things as video games? Whatever the case, happy holidays to you and everyone else too. Bit past for thanksgiving, but there's still a few more to go.
I think what the writer is saying here is that if you are playing during one of these events (which normally continue past the holiday they are modeled after) that you should be more interactive and festive. Besides after you spent time with your family and you have down time its not like you wouldn't play some. Everyone's family interacts differently.
Also I would like to point out that MMO's go beyond a videogame. When you are in a dungeon with 10-15 other people and decide to leave, you are effecting more than just yourself. Not saying that MMO's are more improtant but there are relationships and bond build in MMO's these days. Calling them "just video games " is a thing of the past when it comes to MMOs.
In her latest Player Perspectives column, MMORPG.com's own Isabelle Parsley talks about in-game festivals and world events. Inspired by the American holiday, Thanksgiving, Isabelle takes on world events both raving and ranting about them. You won't want to miss this one, folks, so check it out and then leave us a comment!
I had a big rant all prepared about how people aren’t people to each other anymore in MMOs – and I will in fact probably favour you all with a rantlet – but here in the States it’s Thanksgiving time, and although it wasn’t a holiday I grew up with, it’s a pretty good one. So one of the things I’m going to do today is be thankful for some of the good stuff that’s happened to me in, or because of, MMOs.
Thanks for the Happy Thanksgiving! I am actually in the UK right now for a year, but originally from the U.S. and I must say that I miss seeing my family and friends on holidays like last Thursday (and how great is stuffing, I mean, right?).
I love playing games but I love it most with my real life friends which my friends at university when I was an undergrad had a guild that started on DDO and eventually made the jump to WoW! Those were my favorite days to play MMOs, even if they were not my favorite games in the genre because I could talk with these people and see them daily. They were not just a pixelated avatar to me, they were my roommate, classmates, and friends. I think that if we ever started playing together again it would feel like an old band is getting back together for a tour!
I personally love festivals in games. I think the most popular for me were the ones in WoW but they still have a fond place in my heart because of my guildies more than the actual game experience itself!
Just my 2p! Thanks for the article and since you sent out a Thanksgiving to us, a belated Bonfire Night to you!

Very true SaintViktor just look at how MMO’s are becoming more like lobby games. To be in a online world you have to move around that world, travelling to different places and meeting people. Take Lotro’s new dungeon instance system, a window with all the main dungeons listed will now take you to that dungeon. When you leave you return to where you were, that is a change which is making a lobby game out of a MMO. How long before I can sit in Bree and never have to leave it but just teleport everywhere?
I understand something similar may have appeared in WoW?

Thanksgiving is for bringing you together with your family? Geez, thank goodness we don't have that holiday here!

That screenshot of AO makes me wish they would make an AO 2 that game for a futuristic MMO is so much better than star wars.
Loved AO in its day
Would love to play AO2 too
dur1al it called AdventureQuest World u dont have to download to its a browser game
You actually expect people to be social when mmos are becoming anti-social single player games ? Good luck with that!
