This game is SOE's to lose. With two other Super Hero MMO's out they have had ample time to not do what has limited the other two MMO's and improve on the genre. I am pulling for them as I enjoyed COH for a time and loathed CO from the start. If they can move the bar above these other two super hero MMO's they will have a successful and fun MMO on their hands. Time will tell, very short time to tell coming up. It's theirs to lose.
Maybe some of you didn't read the disclaimer. Its just level 1 - 9 = stuff no one cares about because nowadays tutorials are streamlined like hell. After all its an SOE game so everyone should know what to expect: monthly fee, item shop, trading card game and miniaddons called aventure-packs.
Years ago no one would be claiming that his game is going to be an MMORPG. MMO seems to be the new term for simple, easy and not RPGesque online games, which is a shame. The graphics are looking very dated and somewhat overcartoonish, yeah I know its a superhero game, but still.
Having said that the article is straight forward and giving some nice infos. Tough I can't believe you aren't gonna die even if you are fighting the "tutorial boss" looks like extremely easymode to me.
I'm not saying the game will rock or suck but given soe's track record I'll bet you my house that they'll find a way to screw it over with mini NGEs like always.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
I prefer slower paced, thoughtful combat. It's the reason why I play PC games over Console and particularly RPG games. What I find disappointing is that the entire genre seems to be moving more and more toward the action / fast paced combat and it makes me worry that in the near future, only ancient MMO's will offer the combat style I prefer as it won't exist in anything new coming out.

Its called evolution sadly nothing you can , i for one prefer tactical turnbased games , its still my greatest love , but am realist that its dying out , i am forced to play them on DS .
But for the people who are doing the beta or for murphy , how fast pace is the action.
Say example in 3 second (thats usually the window for auto attack gameplay we have now, wow everquest standard mmo )
Mobs attack 1 time , does in 3 second mobs execute 2-3 attacks and repeat again .
So in that case the system is more action based then anything else .
Now take assasins creed for example its slower pace even if its action adventure , mobs generaly attack every 5 seconds.
(since you are always outnumbered , bosses generally attack faster)
Now i dont know if NDA covers this , or it doesn´t but these are game mechanics involved in a action game.
A round based system we have now for example City of Heroes , mobs attacks every 3-5 seconds LT execute there attacks double that speed and bosses tripple that speed . (so more powers more activation in the seconds of time)
Thats considered round base .
Bleh before people say i dont understand this mumble jumble .
TLDR version or question how fast do they attack in real time . how fast is the incoming damage in second if inactive .
To consider if its a action game or advancement of mmorpg
For those thinking that it can't be an MMORPG because it is an "action game" you are absolutely wrong. RPG games come in a wide variety that can be anywhere from strategic turn based combat to an action RPG. RPG = Role Playing Game -- you are taking control of a particular character role in game.
This game will have RP'ers PvP'ers and PvE'ers alike. This is an MMO. This is an Action Game. This is an RPG. That would be an MMORPAG
Just because this game has faster, more twitch-esque based combat doesn't change that the game has all of these elements in one game. Saying it is an MMORPG is not false advertising. There is room for Action RPGs in an MMO space. They've been creating them for years, I only see this as a welcome addition.
People are seriously saying this isn't a MMORPG? This game is the very definition of a MMORPG. Massive cities/world. Massive bases for both Heroes and Villains. Massive cast of characters and the ability to play along side a massive amount of people. You take control of your character and experience it all.
This game is going to surprise a number of people.

I find this to be an interesting viewpoint, because almost all MMORPGs are "real-time" games. Do you not "spam" your action buttons, especially those that have little or no cool-down? The only difference I see (and I'm sure I am generalizing here) is that some of these modern games put a higher emphasis on movement and positioning, so you have to be aware of not just standing toe-to-toe with an enemy and clicking buttons - you have to move your character around as well.
I will echo some of this point though that the "action" combat of MMORPGs has long been a turn-off for me. The first one I really tried was DDO years ago. While I don't think it was a bad game on its own merit, I just couldn't enjoy playing a D&D game that involved mouse-click spamming of the attack button. I can only hope that the planned 4th edition D&D MMORPG finds a way to integrate more strategic and tactical gameplay as I do enjoy that style of game as well.

Think fighting game (ie Street Fighter) fast. Blocks, combos, ect. executed as fast as the animation of the character will allow.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Think fighting game (ie Street Fighter) fast. Blocks, combos, ect. executed as fast as the animation of the character will allow.
No its the response of NPC that people worry about , its not about mine or your reflexes.
That was always in MMO even in DDO WOW , City of heroes (i always ran out of endurance cause of fast clicking)
Is the npc hitting you as fast as possible , that consitute to a action game .
Cause that causes people to react faster , if npc is slower in reaction time , its not a action game but a standard mmo .
PvP offcourse this is awesome , but people are worried about not able to keep up with the pace.
So if npc are really fast like Streetfighter (last levels) most wouldn´t be able to stand it cause they fail.
And paying for a game to fail is not what most would desire
I see. My misunderstanding. I've not checked out the speed of the mobs other than to say they don't hit as fast as player characters. And once you have one juggled, well.......they don't hit much at all.

See solves that issue of doom sayers , that was the only critical point .
Cause they are afraid they cannot keep up , dont forget those who have slow relfexes dont like pvp in general anyway .
So solves that issue thanks for telling
So its a MMORPG with future evolution , sorry you cannot keep the same slow pace forever people , be realistic .
Always is goog to see a refreshing game that doesn't feel like a typical mmorpg. I'm wating for the release of this game, and I really hope that developers will focus on pvp. I think that is the potencial of this game and the customiztion of characters too.
"The problem I always had with City of Heroes and Champions Online was that while I grew in powers, I rarely grew in “looks”. It may be inconsequential for some, but I love getting cooler looking gear as I grow."
Don't think the previewer ever played City of Heroes much, considering you can have up to 5 costumes and each being completely designed different to your own liking, from well over 500+ options. To say you rarely grew in looks is a farse. You can easly start yourself out to a minimal design and for each additional costume make it "grow" as much as you like. not to mention all of the additional costume options that can be unlocked via inventions and game events as well as the NC Soft store and other in-game temporary powers.
Then to deal with a gear centric game like DCUO that doesn't have nearly as many options and will force you to look a certain way even if you don't want too because the "gear" is better, then I would rather not even bother if i can't make my super hero look how I want them too. that of course is my humble opinion.
Your body type can be small, meduim,or large. There are a wide array of costume choices as well as a nifty "pre made" option that provides an establish hero/villian template you can modify. Combat is fast paced and in my opinion fun. Couple details on tutorial end quest.
Did that really warrant a 5000 word essay? Was there some reason you couldnt wait untill you had actual usefull information?

Actually, you can look however you want to. Once you have obtained a style, you can use that look even after selling the piece of gear. If you happen to like the costume that you created initially, you simlpy say "no" when the game asks you if you want to change your style when equipping new gear.

Sorry fo the double post, stupid editor.

The game has a SEVERE lack of choice on power sets. And martial arts forces you to use... Knives? The costume "designer" is horrible. I guess it was a design choice to have you chase costume piece "lewt" but I think that was a bad choice. I'd rather have a great costume to start out with that I can modify later if I want to.
It seems to be a great twitch game for 14 year olds with PS3s but not much else.
The glowing "preview" makes it sound a lot more exciting and thrilling that it actually is. I logged out after an hour and canceled my pre-order.

DCUO looks like the best MMO in years and I love comics. Definite pre-order from me.
