Will Blizzard ever do a Tradeskill update or add player housing?

Greyhawk4x4Greyhawk4x4 Member UncommonPosts: 480

Now that Cata is here, wouldn't this be the perfect time for the devs to start working on a serious overhaul of tradeskills and even add player housing? Guild halls would be a logical adition as well.

Has there been any discussion of them entertaining these possibilities?

That topic has been brought up by players since vanilla WoW, and from my knowledge the only time I heard a Blizzard dev talk about it was years ago..  His statement at the time from the interview was that they (Blizzard) felt that player housing would remove players from the game world.. I personally felt it was a lame excuse and a crock of sh*t..  I would understand that if WoW remained more open world, however we see in recent years they have moved away from open world game play, and focused more in the direction of  instancing..  Therefore that statement about player housing contradicts their actual efforts..

At time, 6 years in.. It would be too much of an undertaking to add in player housing and crafting.. Mass exodus is the only way to force Blizzard's hand.. by then with a 6 year old game getting older.. It wouldn't stop people from leaving, so the idea and wish of housing is dead..

Player housing and a major trade skill upgrade/change wouldn't really fit into WoW. (a) Blizzard wants everyone to be in the cities and (b) the main focus of the game is quests, dungeons/raids, battlegrounds and arenas. Crafting isn't something they want people to focus on.

Let's say they gave crafting some depth. It takes longer, is somehow more complicated with more complex recipes that you could adjust a bit yourself. The best stuff would still come out of Raids, or you'd still need ingredients from Raids so the focus wasn't taken away from Raiding. I think from their point of view, that's not really progressing the game. Just a guess on my part.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I love how Blizz thinks that Player housing will take players from the gameworld. But yet they have Instanced PvP and Dungeons. You can queue up for both and pretty always be in instances and never be in the game world with all the other players.

Yes player housing would cut down the population a bit in the cities but IMO Org is way to packed with people anyways so it would be a good thing.

Player housing could possibly bring new people to the game, but I guess Blizz is dead set on it will kill the world population. lol

I don't understand the big deal about player housing. I had a house in SWG...EQ2 and just bought one in LOTRO...got them decorated..(man SWG was tedious....and LOTRO too limiting to be enjoyable...EQ2 has the quickest and easiest decoration ui of all three...pretty versatile and simple). Now what?....I get my account drained once per whenever...a week..a month...again...for what? The LOTRO house..a little cabin with a river on one side and a small hillside on the other..was pretty cool looking...got some trees and a wheel barrel and the sound of rushing water....a free people's flag on the lawn. Inside..cozy bedroom with a rounded bed , a dresser, and a chair by the fireplace...some paintings hang about and bookshelves line the walls...stone floors and black-wood walls...a song bird chirping away and ambiance music. Cool...then....... yawn. Walk outside...most of the houses are up for sale (vacant) and no other players in the neighborhood at all. Just me and some NPCs. What's the point?...Do they throw block parties? Someone enlighten me...I was immersed for all of 30 minutes when decorating (spent a lot of silver too) then......meh.

To sum up...I do not think they will draw from the game world...because in my experience ..no one was ever in the housing areas. Should they put them in MMOs..? Sure...I just don't get their appeal though..that's just me.

Actually it is impossible for a person to appreciate interest in decorating and collecting items for a home unless you are into it. When I played Everquest 2 several people who visited my home wanted me to decorate theirs. I ended up doing 5 homes where they collected the ingredients after I showed them screenshots of the items I could make . A lot of the items required gems that could be used to make good spells or other more essential things but they sacrificed it for a lamp or some other knick knack. A rug that required a loom that might make a very good robe again prioritising was not my smartest pick.

I had not one home but several and not just in Qeynos but in Freeport too. Each one I slaved over and I went out of my way to do quests to get some rare item or collection just for a house item or weapon. I was so proud of them and each time I got a tell telling me my house was absolutely great and where I got the idea for the fireplace, staircase ,aquarium or jacuzzi and could I do one for them I would bask in it. Yes you cannot understand that and I cannot explain it to you. I was occupied not just weeks but months because in between I was also levelling up so I did not just spend one afternoon and decorate my home I spent months trying to get the homes to look like I wanted. No don't tell me to go play Sims because that is not what this is about either.

A lot of the items required hours of killing to complete collections and I would gather materials for hours trying to get that rare gem or wood or metal. So while you cannot fathom the interest I cannot explain it to you either.

Well...of the 3 games in which I've dabbled in housing. EQ2 would probably be the most fun. Now I only played a few months...but the little 2 bedroom apartment I had was very easy to decorate (granted I used just some free stuff I had and a bunch of quest rewards..still looked decent for what it was). The U.I. allowed you to position just about anything anywhere...it also had a hidden chest for storage. In lLOTRO the chest is sitting right there like a big eye-sore. You can't put vases on tables..the spots where you can place stuff is pre-defined.

I'm not bashing your appreciation. I just never felt it myself. I guess it's no worse than any other collection or achievement..I just wish it was more integral to the game world...not just something you finish and show off. That's all good. Like if npc's could assault your house and you can go all "Outlaw Josey Wales" on their arses...or if houses were scattered around the world itself and not an instance. So while questing I could run by and see UBERLEETZ on his front porch smoking a pipe (or someone with a more immersive character name..lol) .Housing was on the worlds themselves in SWG (but the interface was an ungodly hell of tedious boredom) If they could cross SWG house placement with EQ2 decorating interface..then that would be superb. Who knows I might grow to appreciate them more and I do go to my Cabin in LOTRO when I log off...just for the nerd of it.

You are why I made this post. There are a lot of players like you and I who want to feel like we are contributing to the game world.

On the Antonia Bayle server in EQ2 there is one player who turned his home into a RP Tavern and there are always players in there RPing .

I would just play EQ2 because of the housing/tradeskills, however, I can't stand EQ2's PvP rules.

Player housing has pretty much been put on "Indefinite hold". I don't expect it to ever come out. Lots of talks surrounding that one, and most of them have always been met with "Took much effort, not enough appeal.". While the idea is cool, their reasoning makes sense. They want the cities to feel populated and having houses separated from the world draws people away from the cities.

Keep in mind that Blizzard has a lot of Captials, and even some of those are unpopulated by anything except NPCs.

See....now that's cool. The player making an RP Tavern. I guess I just don't run into too many players like that...or RPers at any rate. Even most guilds ..including an RP guild never did much of anything except raiding and/or PvP like it was another job. You throw in a "Good day to you, Sir" and you get nothing back or worse.."??" Just my luck, I guess. That's why I rarely join them anymore.
