I've been in Beta since September/October and can say that the game has come along way in those 2-3.  The combat can be fun, just don't get your hopes up for anything ground breaking, the combat is actually a few steps back to 90's arcade games (which isn't as horrible as it sounds).  My biggest concern with the game is, just like most games catered to consoles, this game doesn't have long term replay value.  Getting 1-30 will take the average gamers less than 20 hours, at 30 things start to look up because there is actually a lot to do at the end levels.  But then just as you think finally someone made good endgame content, boom you're then bored after the newness of the "raids" wear off and find yourself trying to find a reason to want to login more.

    The Good

    Nice Graphics and enviroment.

    Decent storyline missions.

combat is different and fun early on.

NPC's look great, especially the major DC NPC's.

    Good balance of public/instance missions.

    The Bad

No reason to group or want to group before level 30 (it's actually a hinderence to group)

Combat button mashing eventually gets old.

Zero communication between players, even in groups.  (This could change after launch, but man nobody used chat or used the built in VOIP in beta at all)

Lack of choice, offering only 6 power choices is really going to turn people off from this game.  I understand the "balance" argument, but the powers they added feel more Everquest then DC comics.

Character models and animations.  I don't know what it is, but when you see how great the NPC characters look then see the EQ2 clunky models players get to use it just feels like they rushed that area.  You can only pick from 3 choices and there are no scale sliders to make yourself unique.  The limited choices are: a Tween, a "normal" build which happens to be jacked up on steroids or has the biggest painful looking breast implants, then the "normal" model that's a just a bit taller.

Particle Effects are everywhere and on everything.  I don't know what it is with SOE and their love for particle effects, but you can't do anything without having some kind of particle going off like the 4th of July.  If you're a Nature power character, then you punch with leaf particle effects coming from your hands.

UI is terrible for the PC version.  Hopefully this will change before launch.  But as of right now, the DCUO PC UI makes the SWG NGE UI look brilliant in design.

Long term?  As a console game, this is a fun game, you'll definitely get many weeks of play out of DCUO, maybe even more depending on the rate of post released content.  But being this is a subscription based game, I do question some of their design choices and have to wonder if this game will be another successful MMO launch, that has another mass exodus after first 30-60 days of game play because the game lacks a soul?

If this was free to play, i'd play it.

Being that it is a monthly thing, I can't see myself paying.  Don't get me wrong, I had a TON of fun playing it. I felt like I had super powers.  But I just can't see there being all that much to do.  I dunno.

Yay! lol now that I see it on the beta forums I'll chime in.

I love my Shifter. He has flight as a travel power and uses hand blaster as attack. Wolf form is awsome for straight up DPS. Gorilla for tanking is nice (if you use the right abilities). Regen is sweet.

As far as the click spam... well you don't want to do that lol. The combo's are where you're going to get your damage. Holding LMB to charge up a shot, letting go, then doing it a second time = nice damage where as spamming LMB simply doesn't cut the mustard.

I've taken out much higher level players (that were fighting back the whole time) by using my combo's and abilities wisely. I like to start out the fight in human form and fight from a distance with my hand blasts. Once they move in I switch to wolf form, pop Neo Venom, howl to stun them and get a little boost, then rip them to shreds.

If I get low I like to pop Gorilla form and howl again for the added buffs, usually I have my regen charged and can pop that if needed.

Very interactive environments, decent customization look wise, nice active combat system, and even though the power sets seem fairly limited once you dive into it, it really isn't.

Sure the whole "Superman is Ice based?" thing seems like it could be annoying until you realize your only taking it for the defensive role it offers. Focus mainly on your brawler powers and flight powers and your fine until you can start taking some of the Iconics then you can create a complete superman clone.

Super Strength, Super Stamina, Heat Vision, etc.

Don't let the single powerset fool you into thinking your limited. You really aren't.

Your travel power has powers to pick from, your combat ability does as well, you have 2 tree's for every powerset and you get to pick from the Iconic tree as well.

Nature lets you be a plant type like Ivy or a Shifter type like Beast Boy. You can even forgo all that and focus on the Iconic powers like Supermans heat vision, wonder womans lasso and bracers, Neo Venom (similar to banes venom), Batarangs, etc.

The game oddly enough offers a lot of freedom from what you can do to what you can wear to what you can be.

You can PvP to your hearts content, PvE solo or with a group or simply with a friend. Fun can be had if you look (Thank fully it doesn't take a lot of looking).

The game still needs work, but it's been shaping up nicely.

I haven't Pre-ordered yet, but I am definitely going to as soon as I decide definitively if I'd rather play on PC or PS3 as both seem appealing. I love my PC and the game works out great with my Razer Naga (Gotta love a mouse with a number pad built into it lol) but I've tried it with a controller and it's still nice.

Overall game has potential and has been pretty damn fun. As far as Super Hero MMO's goes, it's definitely the best in giving that Super Hero world feel.

Depends on teh bosses. There are regular Group bosses in the world. Like Bizarro, Minotour, etc. Those take a couple of ppl. Instances really depends on your comp. I have done Gorilla Island with No healers what so ever when fighting Ultra Humanite. It took FOREVER to kill but it was pure skill that got us through. The fights dont reset unless the entire team is Kod. So you can either revive lost players or have them return to the fight ASAP after rezzing from a "graveyard". In our case it was a mix of both with Ultra humanite. I had do duck and cover through out the hwole fight while taking down turrents and fighintg out gorillas. It was pretty much and a very rewarding experience.

Then you have your solo instance bosses. Like the name implies they are solo and pretty much are bosses wiht a bit more HP and neat attacks. Nothing you cant beat easily.

With that said. The game is pretty fun and the world PvP is engaging. I am definetely looking forward for release. I havnt played more because after lv 20 I dont want to reach end game and then get my char scrapped once release comes. (Still craving for some DCUO action though). If you like action games (more console style) then this is a good tittle.

As for your other question about hte cross plataform. I cant comfirm anything yet. In theory they could be able to make it cross server since it shouldnt be much an issue but so far they have been kept quiet or said its separate servers. I would go wiht the PC version though because most likely PS3 version will be full of kids. Just saying

I was going to post a huge review but you pretty much nailed it.

The game needs work but it is deceptively versatile. Where you might think powers and customization is too limited you soon discover that is not the case. The game is a blast , despite some bugs .graphic glitches (mostly with npc mobs and cars that I noticed) and a U.I. that imo needs a lot of work. It was obviously set up with voice in mind cause keyboard chat is a real big pain in the arse. The quests are fun.The graphics are (again my opinion) some of the best and it runs surprisingly smooth . ( I have 4gb ddr3 ram gtx 275  i7 920 quadcore at 2.6ghz @ 1680x1050 res) . Only crashed a few times that I remember. Still a bit of fixes and tweaks needed here and there but nothing game breaking.

Main thing is the U.I. If they can make it more user friendly for the PC version (the current U.I. is perfectly fine for a console). Especially chat and making it easier to pop a menu without stopping your avatar cold. I am already leaning on a purchase based on my experiences. Fix the things I mentioned and its a buy for sure.

Even  in its current state...it is more fun than any of the other (two) superhero MMOs I've played.

Thank you very much for the reply.

Looks like it's one of those 'love' or 'hate' sort of games. That's okay with me. I'd like to give it a test run before committing, but the positive and the negative posts paint a pretty good picture.

Opinions aside seems everyone's being honest.

Disclaimer: These are my opinions over the beta event, in which I got to lvl 15 so far. I encourage people to try it, to get their own conclusions.

I like the game overall, but I want to point some key things

    1.       Graphics: pretty nice, it is definitely a good environmental scenario, building, bridges and other things are nicely done. You could travel over Metropolis and Gotham City and never get tire, make sure you take the Buster Gold missions the voice overs are pretty fun. However, the character graphics are not as great as I expected to be, provided the limited amount of forms from character creator.

    2.       Missions: Tons of them, maybe too many, any player can have 5 or more ways of leveling  and they are interchangeable, you can start questing in Metropolis and if you want a change in landscapes, you can go to Gotham City and start doing missions there.  Unfortunately, the mission arcs are too structured, 2 missions killing x/clicking y then the mini instance with a few iconic villains/hero, but the repetition gets pretty noticeable right away.  Due to the numerous missions available sometimes the quest logs gets messy.

    3.       Gameplay: absolutely console oriented, while the power system is pretty much the same as every other mmo, the weapon system with its combo system makes the gamepad kind of a must if you value your mouse.  I wonder why they decided to have taps and holds in the combos. I can’t help to wonder which effect variable lag/pings can have on the ability to execute the most complex combos.  Weapons are needed to obtain energy to perform the powers, kind of energy builders from CO, but with a series of different skills which required combos of tap/holds of the left and right button of the mouse (and its equivalent in the gamepad). Imho, they overdid the weapons; they completely shadow the power system which is by itself limited.

    4.       Gear system, no complains except that they need to explain better the stats and how they affect the performance of character.

    5.       Costumes: limited in quality, not sure in quantity since it was told that most pieces comes from drops, in form of style. In this case for fast dress up of your character is better to be careful in choosing the right arcs, since pieces are attached to arc types, i.e. magic themed costume pieces are most likely coming from magic related mission arcs. I think in the end is a matter of preference if you want to get a nice initial look or earn it over leveling. I will stay with the first one from CoX/CO

    6.       Powers: they have basically 6 types of power, 12 trees (2 per power type) and 1 iconic three. I tried Ice/tanking which it was disappointing and mental/telekinetic which it is nice combo with hand blast.  The idea of dual roles is pretty nice, but I can’t help to wonder how it would affect the ability to design, i.e. a power could be nice in one role and not that good in other, so I wonder if it will lead to a few hard choices.

TLDR The game is great for console game lovers; the action is nice (still worried about people living far from the servers) the weapon-power pairing is pretty cool. For the traditional mmo gamer, it will be mostly love it or hate it.

I appreciate DCUO as an evolution in superhero MMOs and think it is fun.

It won't be worth a sub fee though.

Content is very thin - you can quickly play through a character (I'm on the preorder server that is limited to lvl 20, but it doesn't take long to get there) and your PC will be given missions from every mentor regardless of who you choose. Sure, there will be some unique missions, but not that many.

On top of that, heroes and villains share certain content with slight variations - both take on Raven and Queen Bee, for instance.

There is some versitility with powers, but since you can only slot 6 at a time, you will be picking the best six in your preferred role and sticking with them. Although certain skills / powers are limited by level, once you pass that level you can (at time of writing) respec your traits and buy those previously level locked powers. As such, you'll likely be spending your additional power / skill points on passive stat-boosting abilities.

Teaming and in-game chat are extremely basic and user-unfriendly. In fact, teaming is counter-productive since there is someone else on the team to take your loot!

If DCUO launches as a F2P, I think it will be very popular. If it tries to charge people $15 a month, it is going to see a player crash in months 2 and 3 as the majority will have leveled a character or two to max level and gotten bored of the same raids / PvP scenarios.

That's what you get with a Console ported game. An extremely dumbed down, simplified game. So it can be played with a controller.

I was playing with 300+ ping and the only lag i experienced was in high traffic areas in the open world. I was using a mouse and had no trouble with most combos once i had worked them out. I wouldnt say a gamepad is a must...a keyboard/mouse is perfectly viable given some practice.

Yeah, and honestly I would go as far to say in my personal opinion the combat system was designed largely with the mouse in mind. Spamming LMB like in DarkFall and others for an action game just doesn't work. DCUO's combo's make it very mouse friendly.

Sadly a lot of people still try to do the mouse spam then complain that it's a must to play with a controller lol.

I'm assuming most if not all the beta testers for this game got in by pre order of the game.

As far as DCUO goes it seems to be going somewhere along the lines of what I have heard from the few reviews allowed and from what I expected, it's not your typical mmorpg and as such alot of traditional mmorpg players aren't going to get what they desire out of a game they pay monthly for.

For me I remember playing COH when it launched and enjoying myself, I didn't have the sense that it wasn't worth the sub fee but unfortunately for them more than me the fun ran out pretty quickly.

The gameplay sounds similar enough for me to espect the same type of experience which is fine for me, while I would like an mmo subscription to become something that keeps me interested for years like LOTRO and SWG before it I don't think that is realistic with my varied tastes anyway so I'm ok with the fact that I may get a few months steady replay value from the game.

I also plan to wait until the PS3 release anyway so hopefully they will have added more than even at pc launch by then.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Pre-order folks had their own server with an initial level limit of 9. We were even instruced on the main beta forum that we were not supposed to discuss the game with them. LOL. I think the pre-order beta deal was just a gimmick to attract a few more potential box sales. I also think that a large number of pre-order sales were made just to test the game; thus, the restriced beat server that they are on.

I love the comments about content being thin.  It is in beta right now so not yet released which means they have time to release the game and then add patches and content after that.  They've already said that new content will be out after launch with more powers and such.  So the coments about there not being much content right now just means that the game is just comming out.  I don't know any game that I have beta tested that had a ton of content at launch, but some have it right after launch.

Good post. While I'm sure the game is worth the box price, I've been very curious for peoples view of this too. Generally, combat centric games like this (CoD, MoH, Global Agenda) don't ask for monthly fees on top of the box price. Will be interesting to see where the servers stand 3 months after release.

This is also a PS3 game, not your typical PC based MMO where the Devs can continually release data without care. Different mindsets tbh.

This is also a PS3 game, not your typical PC based MMO where the Devs can continually release data without care. Different mindsets tbh.

They  patch games  and add content  to the PS3  frequently,  I am sure not quite  as easily,  but it is done

I'm sure they do and I'm sure SoE will. There are several reasons I don't think this will be quite as acceptable on PS3 as it is on PC though. We'll see.

The UI needs some fine tuning and bug fixes but it’s nowhere near the state of FFXIV’s.

I don’t get how people can say this games lacks character development choice.  You have a tree for your weapon style plus two trees for your chosen power set.  There is a tree for your travel mode which includes a number of combat moves and finally there is the iconic tree which lets you pick from a core of powers outside your normal power set.  The biggest issue I have is picking what 6 powers I want on my bars.  That’s not a bad issue to have.  I have been considering respecting to just travel and iconic powers just for flavor to see how it plays.

I really enjoy the combo system plus how blocking works.  The developers really seem to have hit easy to learn, difficult to master on the head.  That is key to a game that can hold your interest for a long time.

Yes I think the character creation is a bit limited.  I wish there was more customization of body and face shapes as well as more costume pieces at creations.  I would also love to see a jacket/trench coat/full length robe/dress layer added but all and all those things are not end of the world for me.

Content is sufficient to reach max level without having to grind and even lets you play though twice without much repetition (once as a hero and once as a villain).  That’s miles above what most MMOS’s release with these days and I expect SOE will continue to release new content regularly across all the levels.  I don’t really have any experience with the end game so won’t comment there.

All and all I am really enjoying the game.  I keep finding myself forsaking my other games to play this beta which should say something about the games appeal to me at least.
