Rift: Remembering History

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Trion Worlds has provided MMORPG.com readers with a real treat this week in the form of a brand new Rift lore piece called Defiant to the End: Remembering History. It's a terrific read complete with several never-before-seen screenshots. Sit back, get comfortable and enjoy the story.

A cool afternoon breeze brushed my face. Leaves rustled and swirled and I could almost convince myself that nothing had changed since I had been gone. As the breeze settled, a piece of parchment caught my eye gently fluttering into the branch of a tree. I retrieved it to find what looked like a journal page written in a child's script. I rolled it carefully and placed it in my backpack. An acquaintance in Meridian would probably be interested.

God, I already miss that game! Last week end was good teasing and now I look at that logo on my desktop and I really want to play!

At least, I am doing all my end-term exams and project during this week end and next week and I will be ready for the Guardian side, if I am chosen!

Wasted my time reading this. :(

The longer we wait the better it will be so I am quite happy it is not out yet.

The story raises a interesting question, certainly for roleplayers. How did you die? It would be interesting if Darkartist (hopefully real names are the norm) found out his new fence had actually killed him before he ascended. :)

Seriously let down by the ever repeating click the skill to hurt people idea. I'll just wait for TERA.

I agree that Rift will not be in the same class as Tera but im excited to have something new. I'm so sick of most of the current mmos as im sure most of you are. Any chance that something fun might be coming along will at least gives us hope :)

I played 1st Event... Rdy for 2nd Event beta testers

Every MMO in 2010 relase has had a lot of down-falls....

i so want Rift to be that other MMOS have yet to achieve.

Yes, WoW/Cata is polished... I played some... it just does not have what I need now or later... I want Rift to suppy that need..,

Tera looks cool, so do SW & several others....

Will your comments be the same to the other soon to be MMOS as Rift... I think so; we all have our dreams

Rift I think will be my cup of tea.  Tera looks cool but after reading about the classes and how they work its almost laughable.   The combat sounds cool at first then i remember that my CoD Black ops works the same way and well I just dont think that running FPS style combat in an mmo will be as popular or fun as people think.

In CoD the only thing you can do is fire & throw grenade... How does it relate to TERA what so ever beyond the aiming? Its an action MMORPG, not an FPS. Hello?

FPS play does exist in MMO's in various forms, but there has not been a fully FPS MMO to my knowledge.

Fast paced less button mashing MMO combat is more FPS than select and auto attack traditional MMO combat. DDO is more FPS than LOTRO or WoW for example. DDO also has spells and bows which fire in a direction and can miss their target if it moves just like a FPS. AoC is somewhere between these two extremes, you do not need to select to attack in melee like you do in Lotro and WoW but you do need to select a target for spells and I think bows.

well good luck seeing anything new in this compared to the current MMOs, reading people they actually do want a WoW like game in new settings, but most refuse to admit it - people rather claim its not another WoW...atleast TRION seem to take it serious about making the game a good "WoW like" experience, with less cartoon.

I had written this game off, but after reading this article, I think I'll start reading up again; even if that's just to find out why I might not be playing all over again. It wasn't the best lore by any stretch, but it WAS lore, and I think little stories like this make a game all the more enjoyable. I hope they release more story-lore in this format, it really helps set the hook.

Yeah I have no clue, Tera's  Warrior  dual wields wears light armor and tanks by rolling around.  We will see how fun this asian grindfest is when you cant hit a damn thing cuz your tank is rolling all over the hillside and you cant keep that mob in your little reticle because it is chasing your tank all over the place.   And after watching that new zerker vid and seeing some anorexic pole dancer wielding an axe that weighs more than she does completely block all incomming damage and not even be a tank class makes me think these guys have no clue.  But thats me, I see Tera  going the way of aion in its first 3 months.  And I'll wager Rift will be going nice and strong when Tera dies.

No, he did not kill me. I died during the exodus from the Kelari Isles, although my memory is a bit fuzzy. I went by the name Darkartist more as a code name from someone in my business who could get in trouble if his real name were known (it is also my name in game). The real name will probably appear in an upcoming story. My user name here will appear as a character in the next installment (unfortunately Darkartist was taken on these forums).

To clarify, I am not a dev. I am a writer contracted by Trion to create stories based on some of my experiences in the game. I can only answer questions about my stories, although all my stories are cleared through Morgan as "lore appropriate." Several stories have already been submitted so there are more coming on MMORPG. In case you missed the first installment, it is here: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/431/feature/4789/Rift-Remembering-History.html

The stories should eventually go up on the official site with The Boar Spear series.

so Hirath, all Stories aside. do you enjoy the game???

  • HirathHirath Member Posts: 5

Yeah. Definitely broke me of my WoW habit. Been playing a Nightblade/Hunter combo and a Justicar/Shaman. The Rift mechanics are fun and I have become fixated on doing the artifacts and collections.

Shaping up to be a really good game.
