DCOU Beta

So Iv been hearing that PS3 has a lot of population on there servers. But the PC version is very empty. Anyone get an extra PC key? The fileplanet lets you get both keys so hopefully everyone did this and someone would have an extra key.

All in all I'm pretty disappointed with the PC beta.  I've seen the development timeline and know it isn't the case, but it's almost as if they created an MMO for consoles, then ported it to PC.  Combat is very active, but the targeting, control interface, movement mode toggling all seems "clunky" for lack of a better word.  I feel it's a much better console game... anyone in the PS3 beta that can confirm that?

I found that also when I first started, but after an hour or so I found it growing on me. They have really done a good job with it. It definitely isn't what you are used to, but that isn't a bad thing...

After playing it for a week, I can't think of anything I would change in terms of combat(other than getting the triggering conditions for all of the skills right).

The rest of the interface could use a bit of work, though...

I think the problem with FF XIV was that I wasn't Japanese enough to understand WTF they were trying to do with the interface... DCUO's problem is that it's not really an MMO... it's a third-person action game that you can play with other people.  Interface issues can be summed up by saying that right-click to use has been replaced by "painstakingly position yourself in front of a terminal, face it, and press "E"."

DCUO is more of an mmo than ff14 is, and more of an mmo than many games listed on this site.  It's more of an mmo than star trek, Champs online, and guild wars 1.  Don't say it's not an mmo ffs.

My only advice is to try it for yourself and see...

I think they have done brilliant things with the combat system. The problem with the gui portion is mostly cosmetic, with 1 exception... You can't free your cursor when not in menu mode...

There are lots of things they could do to improve the interface(i.e. give you ways to sort your quests... by level, by zone, by mentor, etc...) But the interface is far from broken.

It took me a while to get used to what they did, cause they do everything differently than I am used to in other MMOs... But within my first play session I found myself feeling confident in the new system. I still remember when I was buying weapon skills and I finally realised what those mouse icons at the bottom were... showing me the combination of clicks to do different moves.

Combat is divided into 2 parts... weapon skills, controlled by a combination of mouse clicks... and powers, controlled with the numbers on the hotbar(traditional fashion). Powers you get a limited number. Skills you get, effectively, an unlimited number. You get tons from leveling up, plus you get extras from collecting, feats, unlocks, etc... You can thus spec for multiple weapon types, etc.

Combat is third-person action style. With an auto-targetting to nearest target to your targetting reticle. You can also press tab to lock your current target and track on them.

Some people will like it, some people will hate it... Some people will hate anything that isn't what they were used to... Some people will love anything with the DC label on it... Try it for yourself and make up your own mind which of those categories you belong to.

Wish i could find a extra PC beta key. From what iv seen and heard there are some clunky problems but the game has potentioal. I wish i was around in knowing that they were giving out key I would of picked one up.

If anyone has an extra let me know.

FFXIV is in every way an MMO, it's just atm a poorly designed MMO. I'll agree that those other ones didn't feel like MMOs really.

Calm down fanboy.  Of course it's an MMO.  FF14 is an MMO, too.  So is Farmville. I'm merely saying that the interface is more designed for a console controller and what you'd expect from an action title on said console than a PC.  Also that when they decided what buttons/keys/numbers should do what task, they did so by blindfolding a monkey and giving him a dartboard instead of play-testing it. To wit, I think it would probably play better on PC if you used a controller instead of a keyboard/mouse. .

Its definitely an MMO... the only question would be whether it is an MMORPG.

    Pro-RPG side:

It has a well developped storyline, with lots of side stories

It has a gear and upgrade system

    It has a stat system

It has a system of progression(including powers, skills, etc...)

    Your character has purpose.

Grouping is integral for the end-game, and at least useful for other parts of the game(especially bounties... try going after bizarro at lvl 13 by yourself... Or Killer Frost at any level).

    Anti-RPG side:

It has very action oriented combat... Almost more a FPS than a traditional RPG, Although it does maintain a lot of the traditional conventions.

Action oriented combat is not really Anti-RPG. Combat isn't exclusive in RPG's and can range from all sorts.

I know that Jimmy... I included that on the negative side because people are putting it on the negative side... For example, Mizzium wrote "DCUO's problem is that it's not really an MMO... it's a third-person action game that you can play with other people."

Came here to post in favor of the game. I just played about an hour and reached lv5, made the tutorial, but i liked what i saw indeed. The game has some problems, but in comparison to other MMO's on the market it's much more complete.

For me the major problem is that the game is a bit confusing and the combat can get clumsy sometimes, but this is the only major problem i found in this very early impressions.

The game runs well altough i haven't gone outdoors , indoors i didn't see any FPS decrease even when the screen got i bit crowded.

The storyline seems very well done, the customization is fine, and the super hero feeling is much more compeling than others self proclamed super hero MMORPG's. The first impression i had is that this is fhe truly first super hero MMO to reach the market, others were just preparation samples to this game.

If they minimize the present bugs they can reach a big audience that are waiting for a good game in this genre for soo much time.

For those looking for beta keys, fileplanet has some for subscribers.  The PS3 servers are always heavy on players because its free to all Playstation Plus subscribers and ALSO all beta players were given PS3 keys to pass out to friends.  I've already used mine or else I'd have one open to pass out.

Games really fun overall.  UI needs improvement and the bugs need to be squashed.
