as far as i know, there won't be a crafting skill. gw doesn't have skills in the traditional sense, u just have a skill, like a spell, and when u level up its skill branch, it improves. u don't have to level up each different skill like fishing, smithing, and whatnot. u just buy a skill and use it. all the skills are combat related and i assume that they will stay that way. if u have ever played diablo 1 or 2, the skill system is much like that of guild wars, though u would expect that from former blizzard employees. if u want new armor, u get the materials needed and have the town crafter make the item for u.

This game doesn't have traditional crafting. You just find materials a crafter that crafts items that use materials and you pay the crafter to make the item for you.

I would so love to see this changed as i love traditional crafting and its one of the few small things id like to see improved with this game.

hmm no crafting... i rather prefer that everyone crafts, instead of no crafting...

in WoW everyone crafts, its not great, but it is at least crafting.

Crafting isnt a nessecity but i still really enjoy it. It wouldnt be that hard to implement a more robust and true crafting system into guildwars. The materials are already there just give the powers of crafting to the players and turn the crafters into skill trainers similiar to wow with some recipe drops thrown in.

I can live with the current guildwars system but it wouldnt take much work to make it at least as good as WoWs.

So you are saying, just because it is free i should play it and deal with it? I wanted to know if there was crafting, because i like to craft stuff, and since there isnt i dont know if i am going to play this game.

There indeed isn't much crafting in the game and no crafting skills. You just extract material like steel, iron, cloth from the objects you find and a NPC crafter makes whatever armour you want from that.

Next to that, you can find dye to paint your equipment, but that's about it.

MHO is that crafting is nice and adds to the variety of gameplay en interaction with the environment, but it shouldn't be mandatory to get the best equipment. Iow: there may be an option to become blacksmiths of armourcrafters or hunters or whatever added to the game, but it shouldn't be necessary to take that up. Just for the people who'd love it :)

A bit of crafting every now and then wont du u no harm :) RPG's supposed to be a bit of a copy of reality in other times and they used to craft a lot :D

I wouldn't mid it either way, NPC crafting or PC crafting. I just wish the upgrade materials were a little more common. It's easy to get the items to craft the base item but to find things to upgrade it is a whole other story.

About the materials: it's just like all other RPG titles really, gems and runes usually are quite rare, that's part of the fun of it. And you need an expert salvage kit to get them. ANet has been so kind to make specific guids on where to find which materials, so it must be possible to get whatever you want!

And for the crafting: I'd LOVE to have a broadening of the in-game possibilities, but for all the players who really want a RPG version of Unreal Tournament I hope it won't be mandatory (as I wrote before).

A nice in-game inn/tavern to discuss the game would be welcome, too! :)

That is a great idea with crafting.  I personally am not big into crafting things in a game, as a profession.  I do know that crafting is not a really important part of the game.  The NPC crafter makes a unique suit of armor that is unique for the player.  I don't know how they could do that with other crafter players.  It doesn't seem like it would be possible for players to craft for others, and make it unique for them.  You'd get all sorts of scammers that would craft something, but then "Oos, I click to customize it for myself, rather than for you.  Sorry, but it won't do you any good now.  I'll just keep it."  Maybe you could craft for themselves, and make it unique for them.  The better your crafting skill, the better attributes the armor could/would have.

And a inn/tavern would be nice, my only thought about it would be that is where all the griefers and people that make serious discussion impossible would also hang out.  There are already too many other people out there saying "This part of the game sucks" without coming up with a reasonable alternative.  If something is wrong, great, but make sure you also say how it would be possible to fix/correct.  Spamming that something sucks or doesn't work over and over gets very very annoying.  I remember other MMOGs, I'd have a full squelch/ignore list, and wish I had more space available.

Yes we certainly want to avoid things like people crafting for others but later keeping it for oneself. No bonusses in battle because of crafting, for otherwise 'pure' fighters would feel obliged to go through what they consider to be a tedium they thought te be gotten rid of in GW. Yes, to make your equipment unique could be possible, but no - please no bonusses! The same for hunters who could get skins to make fur cloaks which are just decorative but very expensive to buy.

But nevertheless, these parrallel worlds could both exist in the game. I thought about craftsmen who could do what the NPCs do - it would save a bit of gold, but not too much.

And about taverns/inns: - I thought of different taverns in the different towns; private taverns near the arena for teams who just battled and want to talk it over, special taverns for the different professions with the option to go into a private room (instances?) if you have found a couple of soulmates you wish to discuss further with. And of course mixed taverns for everyone - with different decorations and music - almost real! ;-)

That's what makes RPGs so great.  You can almost live another life in a fantasy world.  I personally like games that have a very clear-cut world, where things behave in a somewhat believable fashion.  Having somewhere where you can kick back and sip a simulated beverage and chat with people from around the world while recovering from wounds suffered in the last GvG battle just recently finished.  It would give the atmosphere that you really are in the world, making all the more believable.

Games that are true to the era/world they are designed for go a long way with me.  They have gone to great detail to construct an elaborate world that is true to it's storyline.  It's one of the few I've seen that are so acurate.
