Any company has the legal right to wipe a server, it's just a matter of pissing off current playerbase vs. potentially finding new subscribers. I don't know of any MMOs that have actually done this ... but it would certainly restore my will to play.
I look at it from a marketing perspective ...
1) Build in a few more patches (the content patch, more bug fixes)
2) Reward existing players with a certain amount of free game time
3) Wipe
4) Publicly announce that some missteps were taken, apologize, and market the game across all media sources indicating that MO is taking a fresh approach and would like to welcome back previous customers with a free month.
It's like the Tylenol story: they pulled back all of their initial product and garnered a massive amount of public approval for "doing the right thing." Now it's one of the most popular drug brands of all time.
No developer will push his luck and take a chance of loosing a huge amount of up to now loyal playerbase to gain few subs. Wipe post release from marketing perspective if you like it so much would be nothing more then marketing and financing suicide for the company as even the loyal players would be too pissed off about their lost effort that they would take a chance in another mmo. If SV, hell if any mmo hosting company would do that then step 5 would be added days after-pack your stuff and find employment in still existing company.
Your forgetting that MMORPGs are not tangible goods.
The only other company that I've heard of "Wiping" an mmorpg server was Sierra WAY WAY back in a game called The Realm. When they did this they lost over half there subscribers.
Since then I've never heard of any other MMO "Wipe" there servers after beta. It would just be suicide for the game.
It's a good thing Mortal Online simply doesn't need a wipe.
Never trust a screenshot or a youtube video without a version stamp!
Assuming what you say is true that is certainly not the general public impression.
Most people have heard about and believe that bugs have caused major imbalances. There is no way to prove that it has all be undone via bans. Case in point: if I were to login right now I should still have a bank full of Dragonigena Armatus books that I bought for 10s.
Cool for you. That armor is used by noobs only. Also, every single armor crafter and his dog got it and with soon to hit live learn by doing that books might not be useful anymore. Hell, right now you won't even need a book for Damage Assessment anymore. There is no uber book that will give you an advantage for longer then a week in MO and even if you got some book cheaper then others then so what? You've got a week advantage that counts for nothing in the long run.
If you had bank full of duped gold then chances are(by chances read 99,9%) that all of it is long gone.
Sorry, I don't think I explained this properly. Having not logged in a while I don't know what is currently game-breaking or not.
I actually sort of like MO. However, since I have not played in a while it is my impression that game-breaking bugs did/do exist and I think this is what other non-subscribers believe as well. Maybe that is no longer the case, but the impression still exists. Unfortunately, I don't think there is enough marketing power to overcome this stigma.
This is why I said that a server wipe could potentially be a positive thing. Whether or not it's necessary for game balance, it would create an opportunistic new start for non-subscribers without fear of being behind. It would give SV a great chance to sort of re-launch itself and taut its new features and improvements.
Again, I'm speaking in terms of public opinion and marketing as opposed to what the physical status of the game currently is. Hopefully, you understand my point better and that I am not trying to diminish the game itself.
"- Added support for NPCs that teach you skills (tutors).
- Tutor that teaches skills and tells you how to play the game has been added in all starting locations. Morin Khur have all available tutors."
I just love seeing over and over when SV realise their 'hardcore' sandbox design doesnt hold in longer terms. Hi, WoW trainers.

Pretty much, what you see is them finally learning the basics of game design.
these features were always planned. A game you might not have palyed UO had tutors and since MO is trying to recreate it its no suprise they are in MO. Having a tutorial and showing new palyers how to play the game does not make the game any less sandbox or any less hardcore. Im sorry but i just dont understand what your talking about here. Theres a different between making a game user friendly and making a game hardocre they are 2 different things.
for those who havent palyed the game and those pretending they are still playing the game. The train a skill as you learn it has been ingame sicne the previous patch. If you jump you will gain jumpnig if you try to swim then swimming etc. Books will only come in 1 type and thats basic which can teach you to 70. Skills which need books are skills that would not orginally be known of without first reading like magery and crafting. But these books only teach you the basics. Tutors are in UO and uo is the ultimate sandbox game so nobody can say they arent sandbox. Basically how they worked in UO was coin for instant skill gain so you pay 500s and you will instantly jump to 30 skill if that makes sense.
this patch is a great looking path that is certainly looking like its going to make MO much more user friendly and with flash hopefully the ui will become alot less clunky to.

Being behind in MO is not a big deal, The devs spcifically held off on adding any of the great loot because the ai was easily exploitable only now are we starting to see it. Basically MO is not a grind fest you can happily create a combat ready character within a week. Equipment isnt expensive neither you are still prefectly viable in combat with farming mobs for 30 mionutes to get gold for your equipment.
I see no reason why anyone should think they would be behind and the game should wipe. It takes a few weeks to catch up. Joining a guild would probably speed that up considerably.
I dont think there are any game breaking bugs in MO currently, however theres usually 1 or 2 each aptch which last ingame for a couple of days before being fixed but considering loot is cheap and equipment is to its never anything major. Hopefully this patch will move in the right direction and not break anything.

OMG....this is a good patch but there are still books? Books are not UO. THey are fail
Also if they are still TRYING to make it like UO then they should give you a fair amount of money to start out just UO always did. THey money should be enuff to get 30% skill purchase in 2 skills of your choice plus a weapon or piece of armor or something.

This isn't UO, it's an entirely different game... it's inspired by UO but don't expect a copy & pasted ruleset. As far as game mechanics go, I don't see what the problem with books is anyway, I guess.

Lol.. yeah.. except them bringing up UO as example in every single thing they do.. Flagging, thievery (event hou they failed to copy paste UOs protection methods), ect..

Take some good ideas and then add your own to the mix to get better results. This is how every single computer game improves compared to previous one.

Except that I honestly dont see any of SVs own 'good' ideas, just copy paste and bad design on the rest.
Maerlyn got many unpleasant chracteristics, but stupidity is not one of them. You should realize that the email was sent by him counting on it to be leaked, to get some free PR and show that he "cares" about the community.
when is the patch supposed to be deployed? Its interesting that SV have delayed it for further testing, maybe they are starting to learn their lesson. Lets see if it pays off.

If you were here to play the game, you'd knew that we already downloaded it.

Interesting feature, apaprently you just make your own rules. Altough I would prefer seeing them actually implementing sandbox features into gameplay and not minigames, but it is a step in the right direction.

UO did a server wipe after the launch of a new server, as they forgot to turn off XP gain mods.
The exploiters will never go away, Henrik himself unbans them according to inernal emails.
by 'internal emails', I assume you mean people that post plain text and claim that a friend of a friend is a dev who hooked them up with the truth?
