How is Darkfall these days?

StevieHmselfStevieHmself Member Posts: 134

I played DF back druing launch and it was so much fun for me. I stopped playing because of mostly non game related issues and what not. But now im wondering if i should sub again. Has the game population grown since launch? How about the gameplay? And is anyone from my old Clan or recognize my name <Keith Cooper from the clan WMD>

I used to always say that this game has so much potential, but now a year later do you think it has reached that potential?

The game population has been split to two servers.  NA and EU.  There was a decline in the population but their has been a steady influx of new players (personal observation).

The game has received numerous patches of bug fixes and expansions with another big one coming soon.  Needless to say,  Darkfall has come a long way and continues to improve.

The game sure had a lot more problems back when you left . ... lol

Since then there has been lots more naval combat over sea towers or just for whatver, villages with player housing that are easily captured for the tax money, daily quests vs. new mobs w/ unique abilities, mob AI is much better (esp. in dungeons), PVP is harder (people are better and grind was reduced), dozens of little fixes to annoying things like being able to default stack when looting and equipping arrows or stuff like that, crafting has been improved so that you get more xp when making better items (no longer having to make worthless garbage that nobody will ever use to level), player vendors can be purchased as one of the additions to housing, new spells and skills, can now customize each spell for jumping or extra damage and stuff, new mounts (some are faster but weaker while battlehorns are same speed but much tougher), new boats (lots of), graphic updates every few patches and direct X11 support coming soon along with new character models and animations, sieges are a lot more playable well less lag for me anyways, archery and melee have specializations, melee and archery have a much better chance against mages than they used to, shared cooldowns for many spells and skills so that not having a cap doesnt make people ridiculously powerful, new blinding-like spells that make combat much more pleasant to watch and can scare the hell out of you at times, AOEs have been nerfed so that direct damage is only dealt where the nuke hits, fun hulks and fun flags for community events, GM-controlled mobs (they will be massing together to attack NPC cities sometime this weekend on NA!), no more water logging, no more macros needed to AFK harvest, offline skilling just came out and is being worked on and improved as I type this, treasure maps can now be found and loot from digging in certain places, dynamic quests have supposedly been added but nobody has figured it out yet?, much less looting for noobs since lower level mobs drop twice as much stuff but with every other kill, rare ores drop from regular nodes now just as frequent as steedgrass, the game generally sounds better and runs smoother, . .. I know I am missing quite a bit but I have mentioned a hell of a lot!

Oh yeah, HP is now rewarded from VIT/STR with dimishing returns so getting 400hp is now much easier and only a 1-month old character can have as high as 300! (probably the biggest change that helped newer players). Title quests and a lot more quests in general that do things like offer a title that can be worn to raise a stat and there will be more scrolls and stat pots or whatever rewarded for questing as well. Mobs drop more gold than they used to and have been better balanced so the PVE is fun for even an end-game toon.

Rays are now instant cast but share a cooldown as well. Heavy armor has much better resistance vs magic. Mounted combat has been nerfed so much that it is useless for vets.

I played back when it cost like 2-3 bucks to play the trial. Found paying for a trial odd, anyways it felt very dead back then, though I think it was because it was still really new.

Has combat changed much from back then?

The game has improved alot while the basic combat mechanics remain the same..  Melee is still about speed and quick changes in direction..  Archery is still the same..  And magic is what magic is...  there is a spell of the month and everyone gets it.. then they nurf or change it and something else becomes the now spell to get so the grind of spells is quite hard..

The feeling of the game being dead is wrong... the starter areas are quite because you dont get meny people in them since most people will look to join a guild soon after starting.. and all if not most guilds live out of there player citys...  So alot of the world is quite but get close to a player city and you will see activity... :)

The population is nowhere near close to what it was at Launch or NA Launch. It has dropped pretty drastically, aside from new expacs bringing people back for a month or 2 before they leave again. Lot of people came back at NA Launch because it meant starting over again, "without" the whole AFK macro'ing and hacking issues. Before NA launched, players on EU were already starting to get a pretty big advantage for AFK Macro'ing their skills and stats up which left those who chose to play legally at a pretty big disadvantage. NA Launch was like a new hope in some way, and it worked for a month or 2 and then it went down the drain again, which was bound to happen. Hacking had long been fixed, even before NA launched, but AFK macro'ing was never really adressed, and still hasn't truly been adressed up to this day.

If you're talking about the potential it had based on the websites features at launch and all, know that it hasn't even reached a fraction of it, and to some extent may have even taken a turn for the worse. (Search Fun Hulks). That being said, if you had no issue with the game itself, you could always try again on a Trial Account so you won't have to spend a sub just to check things out. Or just resub if that's your thing.

I came back to the game about a two weeks ago..

IM on the EU server and played from launch until the servers split...

The lvlnig time now is nothing compared to what it was, they have it nearly perfect...

I joined a guild as soon as i got back in and have not had any issues with population really, out city and alliance is attacked daily and we also run raids ourselves...

Great fun sure there is a gap between vets and new players but its like that in every game.

I think one of the main things about mmorpg's for me is character development over time, i dont want to ahve everything from the start and i dont want to max out in a week.. how boring would that be...

Come back to this game and you wont stop having fun...

Not really. I still find it funner than any other game that I have ever played though . .. no caps helps in this department believe it or not.

I have played 1 year now. . . I was not there at the beginning.

What is new from i started:

    1. Wildlife (in cities aswell, cats, rats etc. )

    2. New mounts

    3. Meditation. (Good thing, like something beside the game, helps the casuals aswell a bit)

    4. Better AI

    5. Ice dragon and demon (2 very well made world bosses)

    6. Motion capture studio (AV is working on new skins, animations why new gear havent showed up yet. This need to be in place so gear is easy to fit the new system. http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=245234

    7. Enviromental sound system are being created. Not there yet. Comming hopefully before summer.

    8. Rare ore drops from normal nodes.

    9. More unique monsters comming http://www.youtube.com/user/DarkfallOnline#p/u/1/3Gjn9U0hLcw

    10. Newbie dungeon in starter towns

    11. New world graphics. Sand, better rock graphic etc.

I must say i think they are moving forward very nicely. There are stuff that could be added but they are working on alot. And stuff appears from patch to patch looking nice. I have played SWG, WOW, AOC, PS, GA, COS, MO and EVE. I tried it all. But i will stick to this game its so awesome and well designed system behind makes FPS a possibility and it just works way better than ever expected. Nicely done game.

And yes. Starter cities might seem a bit low in population. But i know its way better than when i started playing 1 year ago. The population is well spread in the whole world of Agon. The time you join a clan you will see that players are very well placed on whole Agon fighting to appear as the main factor of Agon.
