There may be more in a later expansion but right now you have something like 7 races.  Which is okay for launch.

You also have to take into account if such races are force sensitive they will have to morph their faces as well.  Not sure how that would work for a wookie or tradoshans.

Launches tend to not have many classes included at launch, expecially when so much money is spent on voice acting, story, worlds, combat, and other such things.

While it is true that that there are seven races available at launch, isn't it also true that some professions are race exclusive - so, for example, you can't ever be a Sith Pureblood Jedi?

Yes some races are locked from certain classes, it's usually down to some kind of lore, like that races doesn't do that sorta thing.  Taking the Sith Pureblood Jedi for example.  Sith Pureblood are Sith in nature thus are never jedi.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

The "making of" vids of some of the Mass Effect alien race says otherwise... just saying.

I've not seen the making of but the way i understand it, that was Bw first actual (sex) scene so i'm not sure i want to stick BW into doing everything because it's sexy.

I did do some research on this the last time i visited this forum and the most they are going to do towards the romance is the same thing the star wars movies did and make nuances towards each other, kinda like a raise eyebrow, that sorta thing.

Think Han toward Leia sorta thing.

Their main reason as of their own statements is they do not want races in there that are playable that you as a player would need more information to understand how to play. Or in other words it is easier to do it the way they are, though they have hinted at later expansions adding races like wookies and so on to the game as a playable race with a racial origin planet and quest chain.

I feel this is mainly because it is easier to do the voice acting on the ones they have, since companions don't seem to talk overly much. Personally I do not like the standard near human and human only races at launch. To me this is a cop out sice it means that the races I can play are playable simply because they all have similar faces. Lop the extranious parts off of a twileck's head and you have a bald human with a tentical wig. Same with most of the other alien races they are just the same faces on heads with extra dodads on them.

Mean while the companions heads are not customizable so it is no issue for those alien races to be in the game. Which as a star wars fan I find annoying since they are using the umbrella of "All the heros of the star wars universe were human or near human." That is a cop out to me, Chewi was a hero, Admiral Akbar was a hero. As the game is right now, they don't have to deal with making different armor looks for pc's because all the bodies are the same. If they put in Mon Cal's, wookies, or any other race they would have to make gloveless and bootless armor renders in different sizes than the game already has.

So in short the alien races we would like to play get tossed onto the pile of "stuff for later expansions." Much like ship based pvp, which they have talked about, as well as other classes and so on.

Which honestly I don't understand, since this is after the time of the mandolorian neo crusaders and there is a surplus of mandi armor made for all races. Also Neo crusaders should have been a class, just saying they factored the mandi's into the lore so hard but have bounty hunters instead of mandi soldiers. But who knows maybe their future expansions will add a third faction to the game that focuses on outlaws and mandolorian's as the bulk of the classes.

Will I still play ToR, yes as long as I can play either an arkanian offshoot or a miraluka. If both of these are off limits, then I will most likely give ToR a pass until content updates, DLC's, or an expansion makes the game have more substance.

I don't play games to play something I can go be in real life, I play it to enjoy escaping from real life.

Also, just as a fun side note in the later books Chewi becomes more of a hero than Han, who turns into a drunken S.O.B. once chewi died proving he was pretty much nothing without the harry lug. Just saying.

    Good news for you Rag

    http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/inhabitants/miraluka

you do get to play as a Miraluka

I have always stood here on this debate.

I would have liked a lot of different races but i'm okay with the ones we have for launch

Most MMOs do human with a few extra features.

Elves. Take off the ear extention...now it's human

Dwarfs: Make em taller. Now they are human

That sorta thing. I agree they are near human or humanoid i guess it just isn't that much of a problem for me.

Edit: on the subject of Miraluka, (this is just speculation) i wonder if you go into 1st person mode: if you start to see the world differently. Kinda like you see the force flowing in the shape of the objects instead of the objects itself (ala the matrix).  I know next to nothing about the Miraluka except what i learned from Kotor so please don't bash me if it's somewhere in the EU that they don't.

Additional Edit:  Heres the link that shows the current avail playable races http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=188836

It is entirely possible more could be added later in patches to fit the story.

Twi'lek females = sexy humans with cool colors and tentacles on their heads instead of hair.

Mirs are humans. Really. It is part of their history. They are humans that have been so irradiated that they've all developed force sensitivity and are all blind, but they're still human.

Ask yourself this question: would Star Wars have been the same movie without Chewie? Would we still be having the argument about Han shooting first if Greedo had looked like the guy from Jersey Shore instead of a crazy Rodian? Was Jabba more interesting as a human (which he was in the very earliest movies if you've seen the special features) or a crazy slug monster?

This game doesn't have enough racial diversity. It will suffer because of it.

    Hooray for assumptions!

And there is plenty of diversity. Thank you companion characters. Give it a rest.

Yeah diverseity, sure cause locking at least 3 of 8 races to one class is a good idea. If they lock one more race into one and only 1 class then you will have just 4 races that are able to be more than one class. So if they were to oh, I don't know, make 2 races locked to a faction then humans and one other race could be anything and that is a whole lot of choice. So far it is breaking down into 3 race choices per class, and that is not much choice at all. So yes I call BS on your idea of diversity.

Shrug. People will always complain about something and some more than others, it's in their nature.

Just as you will always have players who have trouble finding their fun and enjoyment in the majority of MMORPG's, while others are having the time of their life in a wide variety of them. Personally, I'm glad I belong to the second group, since those are having more and intenser fun with their MMO's while they're spend time with them image

Well put, I am getting the feeling that there is a serious ammount of content available already in SWTOR, some of these post seem to be unreasonable requests. We all want more races more options but not to the detriment of the game.

Anything short of Star Wars Galaxies 2 will disappoint many of the people on this forum...

I never really thought that I was being shorted with the race choices. I felt they were good enough. I've always thought that there should be more classes (like in AOC), but I understand the limitations of that and more of both classes and races will come in the form of future expansion. I agree with other comments here that if the current count of races and classes allow for a polished and fun game at release, I have enough choices of both where I see creating several race/classes to level up together.

    There Is Always Hope!
