MMORPG mixed with RTS? Possible?

AlcuinAlcuin Member UncommonPosts: 331

Hey all,

I've been playing a few games this year: EQ2, CoH, WoW, EvE.

I think the biggest issue or problem  I have is STATIC worlds.

I was wondering about a game where the AI would randomly generate towns of NPCs, or "lairs" of monsters who then start building add-ons in much the same way that enemy opponents do in RTS games.

The longer a "lair" exists, the higher level mobs it is able to produce.  If left alone long enough, the AI would build siege units, or higher level monsters that would attack player cities, etc.

Would this solve stasis?

I imagine player and mob goals being mainly territorial acquisition, and perhaps a competition for religious/political and social influence among different factions.

thoughts?

I don't know a game like that. But I heard that http://www.beyondprotocol.com/ was good. I keep meaning to download it and make a trial account.

What if your city gets attacked while you're offline?  Or are you expected to be online 24 hours per day?

    To the OP...YES.

This is what i have been asking for, real life breathing worlds, where npc's are not static quest givers.Sort of like a Age ofEmpires game within the RPG realm. It is definitely doable and what makes that design millions time better,is it can forever evolve to where eventually it can evolve in space andother planets,it basiclaly gives the game to have more content and last a lot longer .

What we see in the msot popular game is just hoorid for game design. We see EVERYONE waltzing through quests that are meaningless and boring, then the Raid continuously for loot ...ahem.. frostweave anyone? That is NOT creating a role playing game world, that is superficial gimmicks to keep players coming back for loot,as mentioned many times...a carrot on a stick.

We don't have to stop at npc's building townd either, there is sooo much more, they can wander and instead of doing meaningless quests for xp,yo udo them to gain fame with that npc,so that he will sell you wares, exactly like the old Wizardry game did it.The Npc's could sell the skills or be hired [Might N MAgic]you would need to do quests for them to gain their favour as well,it gives questing at least some realistic meaning.

There is of course one huge problem with creating a Age of empires type game, the AI/pathnoding would eat up a lot of resources,so they would have to really think of a good design to make it work.

Trion is solving that issue with Rift, they are making a program that reads population,so if not too many people,it won't spawn the rifts. The same can be done for simplistic AI,if not many players in that zone, then the AI deos not allow them to attack or at least not move outside their friendly zone.

From what I heard your ships stay in orbit and defend as needed.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Soul Master claims that it is a blend of MMORPG with action and RTS. I couldn't install it so I don't know if the claim in correct.
