Even though all that game content is already ready to be taken and put in the game, there would still be a lot of hard design work needed to make the game make sense. But don[object Window]t turn the actual thing into an MMO unless you know precisely what you[object Window]re doing. In the words of Flynn[object Window]s dad, [object Window]You[object Window]re messing with my Zen, man![object Window]
I agree with these statements, and I also think with anything that one might pursue, if your not willing to spend a large amount of time, sweat, tears, and maybe a little blood, why do it? As I was told from a very young age, Anything worth doing, is worth doing right.
In my original post, I stated that for this to ever become reality, it would have to be given to a studio that could give it the justice it deserves and not simply spew out something for sake of making a profit. However, I will admit that the fanbase of Tron (specifically those who would be interested in a MMO, but even moreso the type of MMO it would have to be) is incredibly small. Based on that, and regardless of how bad I would like to see it come to fruition, we are very unlikey to ever see a Tron MMO.
But... even with all that said, I still think there is potential, but it would have to be taken very seriously (from a fan perspective and not a profit perspective) and given the love and care it would need in order to be something we could all stand behind. Given the right people who have an understanding of what Tron is, its signifiance, and mechanics, I think they could make it work. Although I do not wish for the IP to be mutilated into a MMO either. If it will not work without ruining it, then I will back away also.
I'm a fan of this post. And this poster.
Oh, I guess I also need to add something intelligent if I'm gonna post too... umm.. FLOATING YES/NO BITS! *flees*
I think the environments, while ok for a movie, might become rather monotonous in an mmo. Maybe not though. Guess it would depend on the artists..
indeed. just take a look at 'fallen earth': they choose the friggn grand canyon as the main enviroment for the whole game. 24/7 rocks, sand and some tiny bushes... this is just not everyones cup of tea.
Fallen Earth is a prime and perfect example of what not to do... A dream that went horribly wrong.
However, there is plenty of room for variety in Tron. Although the variety would have to be subtle, it could exist. The most obvious comparison though is the City in contrast to the Outlands. But even amongst the cities, using simple variations on geometry and color, you can achieve alot of variety. More than one might assume. I have an art and graphic design background and education so this is quite clear to me. There can often be subtle changes to characters, environments, vehicles, and other things, which most never notice, but they end up having a significant and meaningful impact on the aesthetic and how things interact within a given composition (and yes a film is a composition).

I was a huge fan of the original tron, as I am a computer science major. The new movie was so full of unbelievable stuff....I don't think it could have ripped off the matrix any more. He could apparently wield magic on the grid or some crap.
There was absolutely no computer science banter. I think Clue said he was the iterator once, and maybe one or two more, but overall there was a complete lack of computer science references, something that made the original movie very popular among that scene.
So please can we just let this classic die. I'm not saying TRON was a bad movie on it's own right, it just sucked as a sequal to TRON the original.
You can believe any MMO developed would butcher the IP just as much as the new movie.
STOR is a huge hit = a Tron MMO could well get made.
STOR is not a huge it = Tron MMO unlikely to get made.
Tron is SF, there are no big SF MMO hits, if a MMO does not fit the template of a known success it won't get made. This is the rigid thinking that is at the heart of the industry, only follow in the steps of giants. Even though STOR may well be a unique game due to its story focus, not being a complete MMO universe and bringing in arcade style space travel. That does not matter it will be considered SF and if a big hit spawn a ton of SF MMO's of every stripe. If it flops it will spell the doom for SF in the MMO genre.

If your going to ban the trolls please for our sake ban the Fan Boys too.
I should have mentioned Eve as someone was bound to mention it. There is no other online game like it, no Anno 1404 online equivalent, it is not a MMO in the traditional sense that you have an avatar that does all your interaction with the game world. A touch of that play style in STOR would have made it far more interesting. But innovative genre mixing nearly died out once WoW hit the scene, only indies will even look at such ideas.
Like TRON fans, the idea never dies and only becomes more relevant as time passes. When the first movie hit the theaters in '82, many knew little about computers, only that the idea of being sucked into a computer was a scary thought. Yes, TRON was kind of a Sci-Fi horror. Then when TRON Legacy opened last year, most of the audience could already relate to the world they were seeing portrayed on the screen. They boot up these worlds every day at home and at work, but could now visualize the beauty and potential for disaster in it. The next logical step, of course, is for the user to actually enter the grid, virtually, in a new persistent environment, for entertainment if nothing else. TRON should evolve into an MMO.
Sci-Fi MMOs are indeed successful as EVE continues to demonstrate to us. It is a matter of sticking to the right idea and not rehashing the same old ones like fantasy MMOs tend to do. EVE has its own niche (spaceship combat, planetary interaction with soon-to-be DUST 514, etc) which would not be similar to a TRON MMO in any way. But TRON already has a niche and there is absolutely nothing else like it to date. It is truly fertile ground with an established fan base (ehem, revenue stream). It's requested. There's even a Facebook page.
Most of the conceptualizing is done. We are only limited by how far we'd like to explore it. Programs (or users) can be installed, derezzed, and reinstalled. Vehicles and combat are clearly already conceived of. Antagonists may be viruses, hackers, corrupted programs, or PvP. I can imagine pets or NPCs in the form of Bit (binary querying systems), or mounts (shortcutting to different sectors of the grid). The grid may interact with the user world; opening facility's security doors, accessing and onlining terminals, controlling street lights, communicating with users. The skill system could mean acquiring new code then following a time-delayed patching of your files. HOW ARE DEVS NOT JUMPING ALL OVER THIS?
"Because man," Disney owns the rights to TRON and is not in the MMO business. They do have games, sort of (official website), but will they get into the MMO arena? I hope it's not another 20 years.
