If this year was the worst year for MMOs, will next year be the best?

mmoguy43mmoguy43 Member UncommonPosts: 2,770

Seriously, look at all the MMOs coming out next year. Isn't it going to be the best year MMO gamers have seen? Sure some may hold some disappointments but with so many games to choose from and of different varieties... its going to be full of win.

It can't be any worse anyway but the best year for MMORPGs was probably some ten years ago.

Im going to have to say yes. I really cant think of any MMO this year that really stood out. A few seemed to do ok, but nothing in the sense of achiving a huge release, xpac, or change in anyway.

I have to admit this year was the year of solo or small multiplayer games. Some come to mind are call of duty, Bad company 2, civilization, fall out, and few others that were just excellent.

I am not sure if it will be the best year ever but it seems to be a great year (unless some of the games get pushed back of course).

And after 2 crap years we need a good one.

Every year for the past 5 years has pretty much been the 'worst year for MMOs', and the cycle will continue for as long as we, as consumers, continue to support developers that release half-baked products.  Hopefully the ass-pounding that Square Enix received this year will be a bit of wake-up call for the industry, but I don't find myself being overly optimistic about things.

You see that is just the problem. There is too much choice and too many games chasing not enough customers. There is a good chance all of them will fail because they canibilized each other. If there was just one AAA game coming out in 2011 there would be a better chance of it being a success and holding on to that success then if a bunch of games crowd each other out. But I suppose if you are game hopper this could be paradice but if you for are looking for a long term successful game then 2011 will be a carbon copy of 2010 which itself was copy 2009.

The truth is, you cannot say or will not know until 2011 is over.

It is not only that, several competent companies have started with MMOs as well now. A lot of the regular MMO companies are just small indie devs that suddenly got too big for their own good, like Cryptic.

Now we have companies like Blizzard, Arenanet, Bioware, Bethesda and a couple of other big involved and while not all of them might have the best ideas they do have competent programmers and know how to make games.

Square Enix really should be competent enough to know better of course, I guess they just looked on how other MMOs released and thought they could do the same even if those other MMOs usually sell badly as well.

But I think that time is running out for games that releases a year too soon, a game must be ready or it will fail today and it finally seems like the companies making them are starting to understand that. They should have gotten the point already at Vanguard but I guess they still thought they could get away with having a paid beta.

The best year ever? Well we can't really say yet that. Although I'm quite sure that it will be better than 2010.

Right now we can choose between variants of EQ/M59, Eve and a few UO copies. That is not much of a choice. Now finally the companies are trying to do something different and that is great news. Some of the games will fade away of course but the best ones have a huge potential, unlike any game of 2010 or 2009.

Next year won't be the first time a number of big-name MMORPGs were released in a single year... and became some of the laughing stock of the genre.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Hmm... if you're trying to say that all those big-name MMORPG's of next year are going to become laughing stocks... then I'm going to bet 200 dollar against you image

@OP: Rift, TERA, GW2, SW:TOR, TSW, WOD, and some other titles as Earthrise, Firefall, Black Prophecy, The Agency, Blade & Soul... I'd say there's something to find in that line up for any kind of MMO gamer, and in some cases even more than 1 or 2 MMORPG's.

Definitely the best line up of MMORPG's there has been since the beginning of MMORPG's.

Haha, this year was good :P The two biggest disaster of the decade were DnL and SWG NGE.

Nothing like that happenned this year... NOw for next year, I can't be optimistic. ToR, GW2 will be great game, but will certainly not be what I call a mmorpg. As a sandbox fan in fact, the more time passes, the more pessimistic I become. :P

    Never say never, man image

2008 was supposed to have been a spectacular year for MMORPGs.  WAR and AoC, by far the biggest names of that year were absolute train wrecks.  They had alot of hype, pre-release excitement and anticipation.  Cool little videos before release (especially AoC).  Hell, AoC even did have a boatload of players at launch.  I was one of those fools.

All I'm saying is "Don't Believe The Hype."  Just taking a cautious view after being burned by a number of highly expected titles in the past.  I'm not playing any MMORPGs anymore.  I'd like to be surprised to find a good one next year to play.  I'm going to be out of the country for the first half of 2011 but I can check up on things.  By the time I get back, the big names of '11 will all be sorted out.  Just curious to see what will take a face plant after being hyped up so much.

Add Tribes Universe to the list and I'm sure theres got to be even more...

Hype? but there are so many... you can't get overly hyped when you are excited for many games coming out!

Heh, I'm there with you, mate, caution is good. I never go into a new MMORPG with too high expectations. I didn't for AoC, WAR and Aion and it worked out for me, never went along with the hype, still enjoyed Aion and AoC immensely.

But there's no denying that certainly the potential of those next year's titles is topping the roof. So many intriguing and also diverse titles with (to me) interesting features, it'll be an interesting year for MMO gamers image

I agree btw that sandbox gamers will probably be the ones with the least to look forward to in the upcoming titles (although WoD shouldn't be waved away at all) but for all others there's enough titles coming up to follow their progress.

Wait, WHAT?!? Tribes Universe comes out next year?

Wow... got to look up some more info on this one.

If only Planetside 2 would come out within 2 years and both Planetside 2 and Tribes Universe will be in the spirit of their predecessors but then evolutionised to 2011 technology, then I have a few more to add to my 'definite try out' list image

Rift will be the best release ever.

  • ProsonProson Member UncommonPosts: 544

    Oh look, this thread again.

I think this is gonna be the 5th year i hear that "this year sucked for MMO's, next year is gonna be way better!"

But this year it might actually be abit hope :D Atleast it cant be any worse then last year.

Im mostly looking forward too GW2, Tera looks good aswell, i played Rift event that was this weekend and that game was kinda meh tbh, nothing special imo. DCUO looks great aswell (besides from SoE being involved) Ill be playing DCUO while i wait for GW2 atleast, MMOless atm and since im a semi big DC fan and its the first MMO on the horiston coming out ill give it a try atleast, hopefully its so good i will never leave it, but GW2 is prolly gonna be better.

    Currently Playing Path of Exile

THis year was the worst, next year will be the best....ever

wait no, trick question, this year was the worst ever, next year will be the worst ever.  You not getting your holy grail game that appeals to all types of people, each with their own specific demands.  This forum will never be happy with a new game ever.

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,094

I dont need MANY MMORPGs to be released, I need the RIGH ONE being released.

Because the idea of a MMORPG is, to me, a SINGLE game I can play for years and years.

And as Vanguard has failed and there is nothing to replace it, even at the most distant horizont: no, 2010 sucked MMO-wise and 2011 will suck MMO-wise, too.

Best bets for a nice-ish MMO right now seems to be Star Wars: The Old Republic, World of Darkness Online, and Everquest 3.

I am in Rift: Planes of Telara closed beta. It definitely will not make 2011 the "best". It's a good game, but I don't think it will be that successful.

SW:TOR, the "story" pillar their CEO was talking about makes me skeptical. It WILL be a great Single Player RPG that's for sure, but not sure if it is going to have enough Massiveness to justify the subecribtion fees after you complete the Single Player "stories".

TERA: Another Korean games. Focused on Combat. Will do good in Asia and will be a devastating failure in NA/EU.

GW2: Little do I know abou this title. A lot of people hyping it. I never once understood the hype. I keep asking questions about it but I don't get any answer that makes me think it will be something.

DC Universe: SOE. Will not "fail" but will do okay.

2011 is not going to be that good.
