"I’ve been playing Rift since this past summer and now that the NDA is down I would like to share my thoughts on the game. I’m not going to give you an all-encompassing in depth look into the game because you can find that stuff on your favorite fansites from people they pay to take screenshots. Take the following as a real opinion from someone who has played the game a lot more than most and who has been around the MMO block."

. . . as for the Rifts. Imagine they are like PQ's from WAR, except that they move; except that they grow; except that you can increase the people involved from one person to several in a raid-like atmosphere; except that can take over whole areas. If you are happy playing WOW you dont need to play Rift its the same thing.
Kind of hard to say something is like another thing and then give all the reasons it is different . . .
/just saying
Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.
Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS
"If you like WoW, you have absolutely no reason to play Rift. If you’re looking for a real PvP game or one with an open world even remotely like a sandbox then you have no reason to play Rift. If you’re wanting something different then definitely do not play Rift. "
I agree with the final verdict, this line in particular, but yet I disagree that one can say its better than Aion or WAR. War gets you pvp fast and right off the bat, its better in that area for those who prefer more pvp and less pve. Aion well, it features much better world design, city design, flying mechanics and a better game engine. It does a lot of things better than Rift so far. I think at the end of the day, it depends what one is looking for in the game as a generic title. Rift is perhaps the medium between Aion and WAR, not necessarily better, nor worse. It does somethings better, some things worse than those titles. Rifting and the class system are the real draws to Rift, other than that, its too generic to really care whether its better or worse than those other generic titles. I think Rift will be lucky to get even close to Aion's sub count including Asia and NA.
Totally agree!
Not going to pretend I know anything about this game but making massively contradictory statements makes me seriously doubt the competence of a journo. Using blatantly flawed logic to justify opinions makes the reviewer lot overtly biased.
Fail review.

So, like the blogger I have been playing since Alpha and on some level I do n't disagree. RIFT does not make an attempt to revolutionize the genre nor does it advertise too do so.
The lore is great and a lot of attention is paid to the story line but if your one of those leveling junkies that does not even read or care about lore you will find the game play fairly standard.
I can tell you that it is modeled after WOW and LOTRO and EQ1 & 2 etc but it is highly polished and in even in Alpha was a great looking game that plays well on a wide range of systems while still maintaining high quality visuals. The graphics blow WOW away of course, as they should.
I could go into vast detail but I quit WOW a long time ago and I thought I was burned out on the typical MMORPG (quit LOTRO, AION, EQ 2, etc) but RIFT revitalized me and I have enjoyed it a great deal. I really like the Dungeons too.
Lastly the rifts are not like PQs in WAR. the only real similarity is that you can jump in and out of them at any time with others.
Well then how would one characterize them?
If you say "public quests" then one who is familiar with Warhammer will conjure up what they know. That there is an event going on where anyone can join and possibly benefit as well as have an enjoyable pve experience.
Then they say "ok, take that image and add "this".
It's not beyond the pale to star with an initial picture of something and then work off of that because then you at least have an image to work with and one that can be molded once you have it.

1. Actually their marketing department did try to sell it on being "revolutionary" as well as being next gen and AAA. I was at E3 and listened to a lot of the "pitch" as well.
2. They are vastly like PQ's in War, but also not. PQ's in War were well scripted and varied a bit. I have yet to see that in Rift. PQ's in War rank and reward for contribution, there is a bit of a race involved. The same system exists with rifts. The PQ triggers in Rift are not static though, and thats how in one way, its better.
