I want a traditional MMO with new story and a new world. I like traditional MMO's....most of the time, when a game strays from that, they fail. Im sure there are a few instances where a game has not (Eve Online...can't think of another) but there is a reason games are created using this formula...because it works.
I think the only traditional MMO I didnt play to end game was Lord of the Rings Online and that was because the world, as large as it might have been, was nothing more than forests, hills and ruins and the variety of mobs to kill was terrible...the game itself lacked variety but that was mainly because it pulled from a premade story that lacked variety which fit the book, but not the game.
For those complaining...give me your beta key...otherwise Im definately buying this game at launch...sounds awesome.

Generic =/= Traditional
It sounds like what you want is a casual theme park mmorpg in which getting to end game is made intentionally short and easy. You like games that lack elements of innovation in favor of the predictable generalist approach. There's nothing wrong with that, but lets not assume that games do well because of the generic properties. There is a lot more that goes into it than that. The more over saturated these mechanics become, the less interested people get. Getting to end game isnt important in any good mmorpg...what is important is that it actually keeps you engaged past 3 and then 6 months...if not then its a failure as a mmorpg.
A mmorpg thats only good for a few months is not really something that deserves praise, so be careful. Be a smart consumer and dont commit to a product before even trying it.
Yes I am in beta and no, you cant get the keys, even if I wanted to give them to you. it doesnt work like that. Wait till OB and see for yourself.
I'm inclined to agree with Rabenwolf however, I really hope you enjoy the game if you decide to play it. I don't get why some people hate a game and then try to get everyone else to hate it too.
As of right now I don't think Rift is the game for me but it might be for you and I hope you HAVE FUN!
It's generally tied to disappointment or alienation. I have to admit, I am not really impressed by Rift either. It's easy to get excited by how they're marketing the game, but when actually playing, you realize it was mere clever salemanship over content. Its a lot like those new HDTV's that are marketing their TVs as 240hz, but after buying one you realize its not "real 240hz" but a play on words. What they were really saying was "its almost like 240hz" but they purposefully leave out "its almost like". This is something the FCC is thinking of cracking down on...but I digress.... the point is similar. Rift is a lot like those TV brands pretending to have 240hz tvs. Their marketing is really pushing this idea of it being a "next-gen premium AAA" product that "pushes the boundaries", when it in fact... does not.
Its that reaction that makes people say "what the hell" and start talking negatively about the product. Overhyping is a two edged sword, if you cant deliver on the expectations, the consumers will turn on you.
I am really disappointed in Rift in that regard, it may get better depending on how the Rift system and pvp works out, but I honestly dont hesitate when it comes to pointing out the garbage parts of Rift. It's natural for one to want others to feel as they do, its part of the confirmation process after all.
Expectation management. So many people just plainly suck at it.
They never learn, no matter how many MMO's get released. They'll always have unrealistic expectations, projecting their wishes on every new MMO and only hearing the comments of the devs they want to hear while ignoring other comments the devs made. Thus ending up in a neverending spiral of disappointment, frustration and ultimately, continuing boredom and burn out. It's sad, really.
Realistic expectations is the start of preventing unneeded disappointment, and actually having more fun playing MMO's.

I agree. I feel like people expected Rift to be the next Holy Grail and now they are let down that it is merely a cup. A good cup, but no Grail.
I for myself am looking forward to Rift. Would have liked to play it more.

I think that going forward people should stop expecting that any game is a "holy grail" and just take them as they are.
I'm really concerned for some games that some people are putting quite a bit of faith in.
Not that they will be bad but that I'm just waiting for the crying and screaming because they didn't turn out how some people wanted.

as far as losing interest in a few months, I do that with EVERY game. No game can keep my interest longer than a few months regardless of how good it is...that's my ADD getting the worst of me. But I like to play a game for few months, leave, come back...rinse repeat. Im not looking for something that will become my second life, just something fun.
What I really look for is good graphics, a fairly large world (not humongous or anything), alot of different areas to explore where it's not all the same thing over again and some endgame raiding. Dont really care about storyline or the RP element of feeling like you are apart of a world....I just want to kill stuff and develop strategies to kill harder stuff while chilling with cool people.
I guess Im not a real MMO lover or whatever, but they seem to be my favorite genre.
