Even if you want to play PVP, I advise you just to stay away far away from the PVP servers in this game.
Even in EVE, you are protected when you first begin the game. Here, you cannot even learn how to play outside the tutorial instance. It's hard to even learn the game as a PVP player. My first few minutes were spent trying to complete my very first quest at level 3, while trying to not get ganked my the 5 level 14-20 that were roaming the newbie area.
I can't see playing a Superhero game as PVE, but mannnnnn. It's ridiculous in this game. With the exception that you don't lose anything when you die, Darkfall is far better in the newbie Alfar areas than this game. If that gives you any idea. (Alfar being the race in Darkfall where most of the lowbie gankers live)
After looking over at their PVP forums, it seems that PVP is completely screwed up and dominated by hackers & lowbie gankers.
I hate to be "that guy", but I've never seen such a horrible system since Pre-Trammel. Even then, I don't think it was as bad as this.
Having a blast in the game itself though. PC version probably has some of the best graphics of any MMO out, with completely fluid movement. It plays just like any single player Super Hero Action game, except as an MMO.

well i'm sure they can fix whatever problems occur...

Yeah, I'm sure. The whole thing wreaks of quality and polish. It's definitely a highly polished gem. Most likely not a WoW killer, but I don't think that's even what they were looking for. I can see this game doing extremely well with subscriptions.
Stuff like this is going to get PVP nerfed pretty badly, I'm afraid. But it would probably be better than what's currently in place.
You're not really taking the ganker's opinions into consideration. Not fair. They work hard and pay good money to be able to kick your ass.
i'm on the pvp server its not that bad .and the lvling is fast
Got ganked once as a lowbie, leveled up and kicked their asses. Don't see the problem.
I have no issues with the pvp, in fact..it's pretty damn fun.
You probably just suck.
I'm on the PvP server as well, it isn't nearly as bad as you describe it to be. It is actually very easy considering it took me 3 days to hit max level for beta. I love the PvP servers ,it's so much better than PvP, your senses are razor sharp since you are also worrying about other players. But when you do happen to come across another player, if you think well on your feet, you are fine. I was taking down level 8's at level 4, because I made sure to think and not just spam like most people think.
[Mod Edit]
Unlike a lot of recent games you really can pvp from the word go in DCUO on the pvp servers. In games like WAR, AoC, Aion or GA you could get to grips with the game via some nice easy pve. The difference is leveling is easy in DCUO and skill > levels. Play on a pve server to get to grips with the game then roll on a pvp server if you are having some trouble. But saying to avoid the pvp servers because of pvp is sort of funny.
O M G! PvP on the PvP servers? Thats terrible!
I tend to have to agree with those that say steer clear of these servers. I'm usually all for PvP, but after playing briefly on DCUO's PvP server, I found that all the PvP you'll be doing is getting ganked by lvl 30s right outside your Police Department or Headquarters. But, if that's your idea of a good time, well then by all means go for it.
Ofcourse i suck. Because i couldn't beat two lvl 20 on my lvl 10. Those two guys had some l33t skills yo!!
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
Playing in the pvp servers. Haven't been ganked once. Good battles. As I have said elsewhere once the server goes live you will have back-up to gank the gankers, etc. Could be fun. That said it seems people who really appreciate open world pvp are fewer than those who don't.
BTW- even in Eve you can get scammed, swindled, tricked, and killed early. Thats what eve is all about.

What the op is saying is that he lacks experience. Gankers happen on pvp servers you can't get past them, but in DCUO you can make it infinitely tougher for them to gank you.
I completely understand the balance and mechanics that need addressing with pvp servers. Though pulling the hacker card when it deosnt seem prevalent in-game to me, makes me wonder.
I don't understand how a MMO can be released in 2011, which does not have SOME sort of level-penality for PVPing people considrably lower than yourself. Like the Warhammer system where people were turned into chicken. It has nothing to do with PVP, when you gank people 10-15 levels below your own, it's just pointless griefing.

I have 2 level 20 villians on the PVP server and had no problem questing/leveling. On a side note, if getting killed by another player bothers you then maybe you should take the OPs advice and play on a PVE server.
Just a point of fact- Warhammer OPEN PVP servers had no such caps. Tier 1 included ranks 1-20 with no bolster (even in the rvr lakes). Tier 2 included rank 40 toons. It was gank-o-rama, let me tell you. I miss it, but obviously I am in the minority since the ORVR servers all died a slow and painful death. When I was ganking (yes I am evil) lower ranked toons it was almost inevitable they would call in their rank 40 guildies to teach me a much-needed lesson. It all balanced out in the end.
It was only the PVE or Core servers that had any type of level restrictions or bolsters and are the only ones that survive today. But I digress, back to DC Universe online. This paid-for ad break brought to you by Mythic.......

DCUO isn't a typical mmo. It won't take months to hit the level cap. Levels and gear aren't an automatic win against lower level under geared players. Knowing how to play is more important. I also don't see policestations/night clubs as griefing POI's in live as the population will be much larger and active.
However if your used to typical pvp mmo combat i'd advise playing on a pve server till you get the basics down pat. Think of it as an extended tutorial session.
I dislike the opposing faction so I will spend entire days doing the PvP poster quest
(kill 5 players within 5 of your levels)
At level 12 it is very fun to mash on the opposing faction until they
/cry
/quit-cutmywrist
I love to kill new players repeatedly for fun you should try it
Seriously now.
Well, if you want to run your sever into the ground, have at it, but don't complain when you find yourself standing there all by your lonesome.
But OP's advice is sound, if you don't enjoy ganking, PVE servers are the way to go.

I don’t understand how so many can complain about getting killed by another player on a pvp server , the difference from a level 5 to a level 15 isn’t all that much and I’ve had many laughs as one of my lowbie toons beats someone 10+ levels higher than me. I don’t have a problem leveling at all and don’t feel like I need any protection from being killed on a pvp server. However, they need to implement a penalty for killing levels significantly below you. The quest areas change hands often, one minute it will be packed with hero’s, and the next will be packed with villains. if you choose to try and quest in a area that’s full of bad guys, then of course you’re going to be killed over and over. Every once in a while ill get ganked by a significantly higher level but then again everyone In a while I laugh over the body of a ganker that got ganked by a lowbie and I die way more often from chars my own level. that being said, the pvp is extremley fun and awarding and i can easily get to level 7 without ever meeting an oposing faction player.
I had no problems on the PvP server. . I got attacked once and they caught me by suprise. . . I was about level 4-5. I managed to get away from them and then follow them for a bit. I played quite a bit (other characters not just this one) without issue. . but even at the low level it was fine. Maybe I got lucky. . but I am guessing you just got unlucky.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
I don't see what ya problem is, I'm on PVP server, level 7, I've been kicking villian butt around same level and even those a little higher than me. Sure, I might have been ganked once or twice but I soon get some payback, alot of heroes out there willing to help. All I can say is welcome to open PVP man, though I guess I'm used to this from the likes of games such as Shadowbane. Though I guess yeah, maybe for the first 8-10 levels whatever you should be safe but meh, I don't mind it.
Something I have noticed in this thread is that everyone who says they don't have a problem, has been a hero.
This is probably why.
Small zones + kids in Superhero garb + mobs that ground you from escaping in a heartbeat= PvP nightmare.
For the prey.
Unless you're willing to do this:
...on a PvP server in a game like this, I'd suggest rolling on the PvE server so you can enjoy the storyline (where this game really shines imo), then Flagging yourself for PvP when you WANT to do it, not when someone makes you.
btw: Darkfall had a HUGE world, so you didn't have the ganking like here as much so not a fair comparision vs that game. It could take an hour for a rival group to get to a enemy faction lowbie zone back at launch.
