Espically for grouping? I want my death to mean something I am seriously considering eve since my ship can get destroyed, wow when I played questing was to easy. There has got to be a mmorpg that actually is fun and has challenging pve.

Whether an encounter is challenging or not has nothing to do with the death penalty. You can have an encounter so difficult that the group would wipe & wipe and never finish but with a zero death penalty.
If you just want difficulty, cataclysm has upped the difficulty for heroics. MOST pug would not be able to kill all the bosses now. There are two or three encounters that are quite challenging.
im having the same problem with mmos and im currently playing darkfall but i wouldnt recommend it to you as far as pve if you didnt want to go wow you could go with eq2 or lotro.
If your going to ban the trolls please for our sake ban the Fan Boys too.
Dungeons and Dragons Online. It's pretty much 90% PvE. Each class is useful in its own way. Sometimes you need a specific class to unlock secret passages in missions(rogues detect + disable traps and unlock doors, wizards can use magic switches, etc.). You can cross class after each level, but I didn't do that. Content is updated every month or so I believe. The player population was mostly adults, but I'm not sure about now after the game went free to F2P.
I subscribed to that game for months because of the PvE and had fun until I quit mmorpgs. You can try it for free and also subscribe monthly for all content if you like it.
No mmo is challenging, that would defeat the point of modern day, new generation mmo's, hand holding and straight line paths are mmo's. if you want more your delusional.
when rifts is released. ull find alot of challenge in that game :-)
I tried ddo at one point, but when I asked in the forums if you get nice variety in skills to spam they said no, and from what I could see only casters seem to have variety in visually appealing abilities that is a nice thing for me to have in games, otherwise I get bored.
Its called Darkfall but the devs thought it it would cool to make it full loot PvP because PvPers really appreciate a well crafted game world with challenging PVE..........
But Seriously, the gameworld with the most potential Ive ever seen wasted on a full loot PvP crowd, I just dont get it. The people that do appreciate it are there because theres nothing else like it and just find a way to deal with gankzor777.
Maybe one day another developer will have the balls to make a gameworld like DArkfall and the brains to market it to other 99.9 percent of the MMO world.
Well I was hoping youd come in and say ddo isnt like that, anyways darkfall while sounds interesting, the look of characters, armor and etc just look extremly violent, while combat is a big part of a mmo I cannot imagine myself playing a savage looking character in a mmo, some of the environment looks nice though, and all the videos showed me was the same melee moves over and over and spells to not much variation.
I disagree. Rift is one of the most hand-holdingist games I've played in a while. Death consists of a monetary fine and Rifts themselves turn into zerg-fests. The dungeons are the same as any MMO and the questing is more of the same.
To the OP, if you want challenging PVE you're going to have to suck up old graphics and play Asheron's Call.
I rarely come in and check for the posts I made because I no longer play mmorpgs; I just login here and see if I would win one of those giveaway advertisements LOL.
Anyway, I'm not sure how far you went with DDO, but later in game you have tons of choices. Also the enhanced weapons have a nice effect while killing enemies(My favorite being cold weapon effect, made enemies shatter in pieces). Try reaching level 4 or 5 with your character.
Out of all the mmorpgs I've played(starting with good old Dark Age of Camelot, EQII, Anarchy Online, WoW, Star Wars Galaxies, EVE, etc), this one had the most challenging PvE (HP and MP does not regenerate in dungeons unless rested in a shrine or drinking pots or having certain spells casted on you).
There are also youtube videos about it if you want to check later dungeons. I remember I was at this lvl 10ish giant dragon raid in space http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g-GWB9DDwU. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8w8GFXaKI0 I remember the raid had to split in half and activate 2 switches at the same time to access the next stage; to open the door to the dragon we had to activate 5 pillars... or something like that
The built-in voice chat is a plus in the game.
The best PVE game I've played is Final Fantasy XI. Only problem is that grouping is almost required to make it passed level 30 or so (newer updates have made it a bit easier to solo) and nearly the entire game population is at end game.
It is funny Kalimni said that. I was just about to link you another similar thread regarding this subject and my response, which, I feel is just as applicable.

FFXI is about all that remains of the once great kingdom of classic MMOs.
Vanguard has challenging and rewarding pve, but, poor game, sigh.
I did not mean secondary weapon effects I mean animations and flashy effects.
I believe melee classes unlock more combos in normal attacks every 2 levels. I think DDO has smooth animations but less flashy effects than the other MMOs I've played. The most flashy ones I've played were asian mmorpgs(which I didn't like).
Try giving DDO a chance and reach lvl 4. You'll see it is a nice F2P/subscription PvE game.
Thanks for the info, I will give it a try depending on how much I like wow, been on the trial and I am actually suprised how much more challenging and interesting the gameplay and quests are now, this could lead to better pugs and so on, but we shall see im very skeptical of wow.
I don't know how you based your assumtion. I played both Closed Betas and ran the Dungeons more than one time. Everyone in the Beta Forums complained of how easy the game is. I tanked Fae dungeon with my level 15 Reaver the first time accompanied with 4 other level 20 guys. Aggro was extremely easy, we never wiped once. I was able to tank for level 20 people. The game offers no challenge whatsoever. It copies WoW hand holding Quest Driven system. Death will reduce your stamina which you can "fix" by paying very little money.
No challenge in Rift whatsoever.
I would recommend DDO for challenging PvE as well. The game is missing a couple aspects that I really like in MMO's (like crafting), but I did thoroughly enjoy my time playing it - and hey, it's free to play so it can't hurt to try it.
The main thing that sets the PvE in DDO apart from other games is the way a lot of the dungeons are handled - you are given one or more objectives, and its then up to you how you want to fulfill those objectives. Sure, you could kill every monster in there - and doing so will grant you bonus experience... but you could also choose to not kill a single monster in there at all, and rely on charm/stealth - and that will get you bonus experience as well.
The class system is another huge bonus - while there are established "builds" easily found on the forums, there's still room for a fair bit of experimentation. But with multiclassing between up to 3 different classes as an option, plus their skill and feat system, you can pretty much tailor a character -exactly- to how you want it.

First, I'd have to ask... How do you define "challenging and rewarding"?
Second, I'd have to point out that the answer to the above question is naturally going to be subjective... As such, I might guess that you are in a very small niche group. Which means that most developers are not necessarily designing games for you.
However, if you want to really do something that is challenging and rewarding try "Real Life". Yeah you heard me! Push away from the computer and go out there and do something real. That's far more challenging than ANY game. And the potential rewards, and losses, are greater as well.
My point is that when you want a game experience to be those things you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Because the Developers out there probably can't make the game you want. And IF they could it might not sell very well, because it would be more "challenging" than most other players want it to be. So, sadly, there probably is not one MMORPG that actually has the game-play which would satisfy you.
And I'm not saying any of this to be rude. In the absense of you stating specifically what you want, I'm extrapolating an answer.
Death penalty actually has a LOT to do with challenge. The reason is that if you can die and respawn within seconds,it is like you never die in the game ever. All that happens is you miss a few seconds, that is not a challenge at all.The word challenge can be equated to mean "not to die" and if you do,the penalty makes you have to earn back the right to be where you were before you died.
You have to look at it in a realistic manner. There is no real death in these games,so we should call it ,severely injured. Now if you were severely injured in real life, you would in essence suffer a penalty, that penaly may be lack of arm use, inability to do anything for a long time,so if gaming somehow can mimmick those realistic penalties,it makes it a more meaningful challenge.
To answer the question of "is there a challenging PVE game out there",YES,FFXI is the MOST challenging PVE game to date.Judging by players crying in various games about too hard or takes too much time,i see games for the most case going the opposite direction,so FFXI may retire as the most challenging PVE game ever made. This is bcausee developers are finding more profit in giving players ease of game play, less challenge, less penalty and show them exactly where the quests are. This is where the term "hand holding "came in,this is the trend of gaming right now.

Too bad so many made Wow their first game and never tried other games. They have missed out on the most challenging game ever made.I GUARANTEE without doubt, that if one enver used the internet to tell them all the answers, the way the first players had to play the game,it would take you 6+ months just to scratch the surface of the game. You do a challneging mission in FFXI,yo ucome away feeling great satisfaction,a lot of accomplishment is felt, you do quests in other games, you move from one to the next, without breaking a sweat.
FFXI gives NO answers, there is no exclamation marks,no map add ons to tell you were to go,you have to think for yourself in the entire game. When you goto do quests, some are insane hard, you really have to think hard and also the game is meant to have you explore the world to understand where things and people are.It is seldom as easy as move 50 paces and there is your answer.
.I will admit, that i used the internet a lot myself.I guess i would have to admit ,that i was just not smart enough to do many of the quests with my brain ,which is why i give a lot of credit to those who laid the ground work ,so we could surf the internet for answers.
Trust me ,if anyone in this thread is looking for a challenge, try FFXi,i am willing to bet ,MOST will think of excuses to quit because it is that hard. Now of course ,with an experienced vet to ease the learning curve,it makes the game quite playable, but during the release of the game, there were no vets.

I play EQ2 for challenging PvE. It's been like a year since the last expansion was released and at most one guild on each server has cleared all the PvE content. It's easy to get into, but hard to excel at.
