I have been reading threads and watching podcasts with interest as they catalogue the many serious problems with FFXIV from the interface to the PVE, etc. However i see that the game non the less has a loyal following, but i never hear any real concrete reasons or facts in FFXIV's favour. I would love some players who have really got into the game to give a list or detail their favourite single aspect of the game.
I play a lot if different MMO's from WOW to WURM, and love to study the development of MMOs and the industry itself, the backstory of FFXIV problems is certainly interesting, but I have had mixed feeling about it as i am a long time FF fan, even buying a PS1 just to play the FF 1 - 6 collection and a gamecube for crystal chronicles, though i didnt like FFIX i am still very curious to try XIV, if not now then in a few months. Thank You.

Hmm, I'm not a fan but...
I liked the class system.
Crafting has the possibility of being cool.
The sound is great.
---
The "loyal" following I met in game were just...odd. Every time I mentioned an aspect of the game I didn't like they responded with some peculiar defenses such as:
We trust Square Enix to make it a good game, look at FFXI it took them X years, but it's a good game.
It was much worse in FFXI, be thankful.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
In no particular order:
Crafting is extremely complexe and challenging. It requires some skill to make certain items by using special abilities learned or awarded through "Guild Marks". 3 types of attributes influence crafting, 1 for Quality, 1 for loss of durability and one for progression.
Class system is extremely complex once you leveled a few classes and got all the choices of skills that you can use on ALL of them. There are only a few class exclusive skills (less than 10 as far as i know). The rest can be used across all classes. Example: Need a Flaming Arrow? Use Lotus Blade (Gladiator) on an Archer. Need to regen MP on your WAR class to use magical Weaponskills or spells? Use Siphon MP or Stygnin Spikes to regen MP. The combinations are endless.
Full attribute respec without going to a town or NPC. Just re-assign your attributes. Needs about 2-3 re-specs as you only get a certain amount of points back per hour. Usually one respec does the trick. It gives back almost 300 points to re-assign (unless you are a min/max type of player)
Incapacitating, crippling and disabling Weaponskills depending on body part (head, legs, arms etc.) There is nothing more satisfying than leg sweeping that huge Buffalo NM so he falls on his side, opening an oportunity for your party members to go in and incapacitate his head/cut his horns so he can't use the charge special move anymore. Requires skill and coordiantion.
Battle regiments, while a bit unintuitive at the start are a a big help in leveling on high exp mobs and NMs, not only doing huge damage but also debuffing the mob with various effects.
Behest, is probaly a glimpse at some of the dynamic content we are about to see in the future. Not only does the event scale the number of mobs depending on people that join, it also changes the mobs and end bosses every run. All that while giving some of the best exp gain in the game. 5-7k exp in just 15 minutes is not too bad.
Story telling, although scarce at the moment is fantastic. The amount of detail put into the stories and the world surrounding you is true FF style. Unfortunately there is too little right now and a lot you ahve to discover for yourself by talking to NPC'sa nd exploring the areas.
Party search feature is probably the best ever conceived. Very complex but easy to use. You can join a group from anywhere in the world through the interface. The problem is, it's hardly used by NA people and it might be becuase it is just the opposite of the regular party search feature. You create a part/event and specify which classes and how many of them you want. then people can join through the search. It's not you putting up a party flag.
Best Graphics and future proof Engine. There are no computers out there right now that can run the game with all the graphical goodies (Ambient Occlusion mainly) turned to max and have a solid 60 FPS. Some see this as a negative, i think it is a positive as it will scale nicely with new GPU's and CPU's.
Best Animations and facial expression engine of any AAA ame to date. The subtle nuances in facial expresions is just mind blowing. Animations are smooth and realistic.
Best Day/Night and Weather effects. Simply stunning and beautifull. Shorelines have splasing water at the cliffs or real waves on shores, even the sand gets wet and slowly dries as the water comes in and receeds.
Sound and Effects. Ambient sounds change throughout the day, Owls or wolves at night, birds start increasingly chirping at 6am. Water sounds different for the various bodies of water. footsteps for every possiblet ype of terrrain and much more.
Monsters are alive, they go about their business, are curious and check you out, even follow you around for a bit. Animations and details are unmatched. Furr and feathers are especially impressive. You can even see them breath and blink.
I could think of more but i am getting tired and this is already a wall of text.
Couldn't have said it better myself. ^^
The textures are very high res............
Sorry I can't think of anything else........
Thank you Taus01, that is exactly what i was after, thanks for the effort!
omg...you mean some people are still playing ffxiv?
That's too funny. I wouldn't play even if it was totally free.
Like I said all along. No AH = most ppl won't stay....too bad, cuz I really wanted to be a taru again....oh wait, they changed the name of that race. lol...like that'd make it "new"....haha...SE you're so clueless.
If a man speaks in the woods and there's no woman there to hear him...is he still lying?
What is this obsession with Auction houses?
And for you info they now have Ward Searches. So enter ward, initiate Search of ward (broken down for gear etc) and then select what itme your looking for, Star appears above retainers head selling item, bounce round retainers looking for best value offer.
Full AH simply allows people to manipulate market prices by buying up all the cheap items and re-selling at higher prices thus forcing people to pay more money for same item.
I prefer the Ward Searches

Thanks to the people who added. I'm still caught in a bad way having minimum requi and nothing more. I wont be buying a computer for a game. Not happening but if I thought I could gimp out my graphics and play I would still look in to buying this. TBH? The quest thing, I dont care. As long as I can go out and sand box grind I will be as busy as I need to be. That might actually be what makes this a glory game for me. They dont have any quests means I dont need to do them.
What is the database looking like? One of the FF7 things that was so cool was the endless list of things you could find and gather.
It looks like they havent added the materia element yet, meaning they havent added the life stream storyline and every game had a variation of it. New means they have no obligations. Visit the life stream and get cut scenes of Aeris, anyone? This game might work out yet. Just needs some TLC.
Add On; Original FF7 as a mini game? I'd buy it just for that.
Well that is your opinion, but it certainly isn't shared by the majority of players. It's the #1 reason why i'm not playing anymore.
Some people are just spoiled rotten, and when something requires the least ammount of effort, they complain and throw temper tantrums.
What they need is good whoopin, like in the old days.
I have been an SE fan and played XI for years. I was looking forward to XIV very much. Unfortunately for me the game just wasn't fun...
I used to whine and complain about the people who wanted "easy mode" along with everyone else and while that isn't what I am looking for, I do like a bit of challenge, I do need to feel like a game could be a lot of fun (for me, only talking about me here).
The list posted on the first page is on the money, those are the good things about XIV, however, for me personally it didn't add up to enough of a fun factor to keep me playing as sad as that made me. I really wanted XIV to be a good game (for me) but in the end it didn't turn out that way.
Again, I'm talking about my own personal opinion and I'm sure there are many people who do think the game is fun.
Currently Playing: FFXIV:ARR
Looking Forward to: Wildstar
the class system is really good, and the crafting could be but there is a lot of it :P
and how is not being able to run a game on max settings a good thing???
this game is gonig to run on a PS3, 6 year old tech, it just shows you that us Pc gamers are getting the short straw, the same with a lto of games on the PC these days (looks at MW2 and GTA4)
PS3 gets the short end of the stick. They will never be able to see the amount of detail that a PC player will see. I seem to remember that FFXI was made the same way upon release with current PCs not able to handle the graphics. Although that could be my wishful thinking, since that was long ago.
Hey everyone! Ive been a member to this site for a pretty long time now and i really dont comment to much but after seeing Final Fantasy XIV and the troubles its facing I just felt like i should say a thing or two. I am a huge FFXI vet and played it ever since the game was released in NA. Seeing the Final Fantasy franchise over the years its clearly visible the square has lost touch on what it means to make a memorable game filled with characters, story, addictive gameplay, and that feeling that we all got from playing ffVI to FFX. FFXI was released as a mess as well, but after a year a lot of things got fixed an expansion was released and thousands to millions of people fell in love with the game. Now i cant say that will happen to XIV but they still have one more chance with the ps3 market and lets face it most of the player base will come from the console gamers and though square has messed up with the pc release they are doing all they can (admit they messed up, make it free, and actually communicate with the players on the lodestone). Im no fanboy and i will admit i hate the game and find it so hard to play but with every patch that is released i find myself playing more and more.
This is the way i see it and i might not be like other players but its just my two cents. I just finished playing the RIFT beta and the questing is the same old X and Y and gather this fetch garbage. Did i read any of them? Absouletly not. FFXIV has the exact same quests, but can be repeated. Its the exact same garbage that you see in all these dam themepark mmos but at least difficulty can be adjusted so they will bring different exp and rewards. I am not saying its a good idea, all im saying is that its a different way of looking at things. Have a thousand fetch quets with txt that get ignored, or levequests that do the exact same things. Whats the difference honestly? Dont get me wrong RIFT is actually looking like a good MMO and i really hope that those players that have been hyped enjoy the game and all the best to RIFT and its developers.
People are always talking about the auction house. Its true that the retainer thing was a bit akward and hard to accept to many players, but all you hear from people is the desire for change in the mmo world. We need change they say. So you get change, its not perfect but after patches it sure is dam fun to walk up to two or three different retainers and pick out the ones with the best prices. It just gives a sense of accomplishmnet and actually makes buying and selling things a part of the game just as killing mobs would be. Rather it just being a menu browser. Again these are just my opinons and really dont care if i get ripped im just saying.
Combat in the game is actually very entertaning. You got the new hotbar thing to the FF world but mixing and matching and switching jobs on the fly can be extremly entertaining and very flexible. I played WoW when Cata came out. The game is amazing but again its so themepark and not my cup of tea. Millions of people will tell me im just silly, but i dont like it. In FFXIV you can make your own story. Find some friendly people make a linkshell start conversations, start trading items with members and making eachother stuff, build your own economy, own friends, and trustworthy relationships. Instead of npcs to trade with why not someone who always accepts crystals and shards in exchange for brand new weapons and armor. Its just a differnet perspective on the way we can play an MMO and a different way in how we can react to the world.
I find this really hard to believe. That the absence of an Auction House is the central reason someone wouldn't play this game.. Do you ignore the clunky UI, the lack of both mid-level and end-game content, and the rather inconvenient faitgue system put there for no other reason than to force players to slow down but offers them nothing to do during this down time.
I find it REALLY hard to believe that despite all of that, the lack of an Auction House is the #1 reason anyone would quit this game.
That being said, I'm a devoted fan and feel the game was in fact a failure of epic proportion but I do have faith there is more to come that will more than make up for this pathetic excuse of a launch. As it stands, I enjoy the game a great deal and am only being sustained by the OPs original point, that I have high hopes for what is to come.
---
Live a life less ordinary.
Well the clunky UI for me was an issue, but being a FFXI veteran it wasn't that big of a deal. Especially now that the lag has been fixed. I never even got to mid-game so the lack of content I can't comment on. Same with the fatigue system. I'm sure those would be big time complaints for myself if I stayed with the game that long.
There are obviously many time sinks in most MMO's but having to drudge through the market wards just to find a damn bone chip is not my idea of immersion. And especially with a game like FFXIV, with it's heavy emphassis for crafting, you just know you'll be wasting plenty of time in the wards. When a quick run to the AH, search, buy-out, finished would be sooo much more convenient. Many people that no longer play feel the same since that's always one of their chief complaints.
Thank you! I have been saying that for ages now and all i get is laughed at. I prefer the leve system to the Kil X/YZ move to next generic hub themepark gameplay.
It's EXACTLY the same but better:
1. You can adjust difficulty on the fly while in the quest, never seen that before. It changes exp reward and quest reward on the fly. You can solo them or go with a group, thats flexibility.
2. You know where to go to, no searching for NPC with a (!) or running around finding the mob spawn just to see 20 others competing for the pops. It spawns mobs just for you only you can attack at a very convenient location you can teleport to.
3. You can actually do them and progress while having a real life. A set of leves usually takes about 1-2h with a behest thrown in. Great way to play casually.
4. How often have i heard players cry and whine for not having repeatable quests? Now SE gives us a great repeatable quest system and what does everyone do? Complain of cause.
lol...they fired the boss...they've sent me many emails apologizing about their crappy game. They keep extending the free period. Then know it's a bad game, and they made it.
If you think it's a good game then I'm thinkin you have no taste in games....SE doesn't think it's very good....haha.
and yes...the AH is a big deal...and even a bigger deal in ffviv, crafting is a job there and crafters need to sell their stuff. Now, if SE did things like all the other mmo's and it wasn't such a pain in the ass to click on things it may not be so bad. But with the crappy UI they designed clicking isn't just a simple thing. So yeah....an AH is a big deal.
I haven't, and never will click on bazaars. I didn't in ffxi...I haven't in any of the other mmo's I've played...and I won't in any future games I play. No AH = no play.
They know it sucks or else they wouldn't keep trying to fix it, and they wouldn't keep sending me emails telling me to be patient with the game and keep playing for free.
SE blew it on this game....and there's no way to fix it if they continue to beat a dead horse. Just make jobs, AH, mail, casting graphics, quests with some sort of story, tele spells that use mana, and a mog house with storage....so keep telling yourself its fine...but I know it isn't and so does SE.
If a man speaks in the woods and there's no woman there to hear him...is he still lying?
I hate to throw a wrench in the execution of this game game but I cant agree.
UI is not clunky. It seems to be sound and visual combined. You need to both watch and listen to know if something worked.
Lagg is not as bad as many make it out to be.
Content is Sandbox. If you dont like Sandbox, you wont like this. Cut to the chase? Play LotRO. It has a very 'yellow brick road' quest system that will get you cap and, its free to play.
If there is a cap on exper, I havent found it. They may find they blew it on this note though. Because when I cap I will have capped everything if I am expected to alternate my skill blocks to keep playing as a power grinder. Rather than level a set, level another set, level another I will have everything to cap in tandem. That might not have been the best way to time sink it but we will see.
I bought it on a hope and a prayer, I liked it. If you cant afford the mistake of buying something you will hate, wait for a trial. I like this game. Its nothing to jump up and down and shit nickles over but its fun and its not buggy as hell. I'm not falling off the interface or getting stuck in walls. I'm not using the obligatory gank the shit out of it strategy that many games fall in to. (though that works from what I can see)
Based on the little white dots, many agree with me too. Nice game, Square Enix. Hope you can polish it. Me and Ksenia are having fun stoming a path.
They fixed the ui last months, but is still terrible and with lots of delays.
Too many clicks and menus, you can't open your inventory with 1 key,no,you have to go to the menu and then select inventory.
FFXIV is not a sandbox,it's just a game with nothing to do but grind or craft.
In sandbox games you can craft your own house and there is freedom in the world (not in eorzea,or as i like to call it,the invisible wall fest land).
I had fun like you at the first lvls, then i got to 26 and realized there is nothing new in the whole game, you will be doing the same things at lvl 50.
And the storyquests are just stupid,walk 5 meters,cutscene,speak to an npc,cutscene,get out of the building,cutscene,walk another 5 meters,cutscene,kill a mob throwing stones,cutscene,talk to another npc,cutscene,fedex a bit,cutscene,more monsters to kill with stones,cutscene,end.
This game has no villages,no npcs around the world, nothing, only 3 main citys,60 camps that look exactly the same with1 or 2 npcs and a big crystal.
Oh and 2 ghost towns, but there's nothing to do in them.
I see no delay in the UI anymore, maybe you need to update your computer.
FFXIV is more sandbox than anything new out there atm. Well you obviosly dont follow the game because company (LS) building's and company (LS) ships are schedualed for 2011 release. we dont have but a fraction of the game thus far, youll eat your words on the building aspects.
For ghost towns theres an qwfull lot of white dots running around on my mini map.
In a year this will be one hell of an MMO, and it will be extremly popular, its not there yet, it has a LOT of growing to do, but SE has the funding to do this and they will not abondon XIV, much to the haters dismay.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
You can now configure single key press to open up inventory, equip items or skills. In that page is also shows your the equipment status in % and bar. Also, when u click on a item slot, only items which can be equipted are shown and not all like before.
